Following a flawless launch the day before, the Apollo 11 crew continued their historic journey to the moon on July 17, 1969. Landing at the Sea of Tranquility was scheduled for July 20.

Commanding the crew was Neil Armstrong, slated to pilot the lunar module Eagle to the surface and be the first person to walk on the moon; Buzz Aldrin, the lunar module pilot who would follow him onto the lunar surface; and Michael Collins, who would remain in orbit in the command module, Columbia.

At 12:17 p.m., Armstrong and his crew fired the engines on Columbia for three seconds to make a brief course correction. The procedure was also supposed to test how well the engines were working, an important milestone given that Columbia needed to use them to get into and out of lunar orbit.

About seven hours later, the crew did a color television broadcast from the spacecraft, showing viewers what Earth looks like from about 147,300 miles (237,000 kilometers) away. The program lasted 36 minutes and was broadcast to people all over the world.

      I am thankful we have folks willing to be border patrol agents, but it has to be incredibly frustrating to try and do your job successfully when part of the government is trying to undermine you at every turn. The same goes for our police officers throughout the country. God bless them for doing their best to try and protect us.

      You may remember I’ve been on this subject for years. My official requests to two Senator an one Federal Rep have been in bureaucratic limbo for a year now. You might remember I’d asked DHS for a count on the number of encounters between Mexican military and police with US Federal and local LEA between 1999 and 2018.

      We had a special block of training when I worked with a joint military unit on how to deal with Mexican military or police if we encountered them inside of US territory. I’m not talking feet inside, I’m talking MILES. It’s not unusual either, there was a report done some 10 years ago that documented some 200 over a roughly ten year period.

      These incursions are usually reported by the local media but never seem to make it into the national media. The recent incident where Mexican police encountered and disarmed US Border Patrol and accompanying military personnel miles inside of the US and right next to a small US city, an area CLEARLY inside of the US, did make a small splash but was quickly squashed

      The Feds actively suppress local US groups from protecting their farms, ranches and homes from illegals while US ranchers have been held at gunpoint by Mexican military/LEA INSIDE OF US TERRITORY. Emphasis mine. As in the case of a rancher who found himself at Mexican military gunpoint when a Mexican military Blackhawk helicopter landed on his farm, he’d have been shot dead had he responded to this illegal act and the US government would most likely have defended the Mexicans due to certain arrangements we have with them.

    Good morning everyone. Hot days and rain ahead. I read yesterday that it was 40 days until college football starts. More to look forward to, I love football Saturdays.

    Interesting times. Pelosi is the politician I hate worse than all off them, even our last President. Never thought I would live to see the Democrats have politicians who made her look less insane. I agree absolutely with Sundance on this one. President Trump is making the Dems own their morons, and it is awesome. Fun every day! Stay tuned, I’ll pop us up a big batch of popcorn.

    Dr. Drew Pinsky is about to have a meltdown, he is so upset about the homeless problem in LA. He says the human waste that is going straight into the ocean is a full cities’ worth and if a city’s sewage system went down, the populace would be horrified and demand something be done about it. He says the rats are going to cause a plague because there are so many of them. And, nothing is being done about it. The homeless problem is not a housing problem like they are saying it is. I have never seen him so animated before.

    Something NASA doesn’t much talk about is what happened to most of the video footage from the Apollo 11 landing.

    There were other cameras on the lander, they sent picture data back to earth along with systems monitoring data, both data streams using the transmitter on the lander. The data were stored on magnetic tapes at NASA and were stored away.

    In the late 70s NASA was severely budget strapped, it was looking in couch cushions for spare change. As they were still using mag tape to store data and mag tapes were expensive they started using old tapes, writing over the data. Problem was that the codes used to identify what was on the tapes was so confusing that most folks dealing with them were unable to determine what was on the tapes so many Apollo 11 tapes were just pulled and written over.

    The greatest achievement in human history and most of its records were lost to bureaucratic bumbling.

      There was a story today or yesterday about one of those tapes. Seems some NASA guy took one tape home as it was one of those “old” tapes. The tape recently turned up at an auction.
      The videos we see today are videos of the feed from the Australian tracking site. Iow, they took videos of videos.
      Kinda sad, really.

        Sad? After Katrina the contractors who work in the same NASA building at Michoud I did, along with NASA, did a bunch of rehab in the building. One day, as I was talking my trash out to the dumpster, I saw a picture frame on the ground. I turned it over and it was autographed pictures of all three astronauts on one of the Apollo missions.

        They had the upstairs and along the main hall was an exhibit of all of the Apollo crews. Each crew had its autographed pictures in a frame, each frame from the first to the last mission was exhibited. I walked upstairs and mentioned to a secretary that I’d found one of the pix out by the dumpster and I had it in my office. Nothing. I called, sent emails…nothing.

        When I retired I left the pic in my office – it had been there about 2 years by then – and told my boss iot was still there. I never heard if anyone ever came to pick it up or what happened to the rest of the mission pictures.

        I read that the guy, who was about 17, bought the films at a gubmint auction for less than $200. He had been an intern at NASA.

    Found out last night that my nephew achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Proud Uncle Tex. I know that I contributed just a bit to get him there. I think I bought popcorn for 7 straight years. 😉
