Good morning everyone. Here’s a little happy to start the day.
The Fiddler of Dooney
WHEN I play on my fiddle in Dooney,
Folk dance like a wave of the sea;
My cousin is priest in Kilvarnet,
My brother in Moharabuiee.
I passed my brother and cousin:
They read in their books of prayer;
I read in my book of songs
I bought at the Sligo fair.
When we come at the end of time,
To Peter sitting in state,
He will smile on the three old spirits,
But call me first through the gate;
For the good are always the merry,
Save by an evil chance,
And the merry love the fiddle
And the merry love to dance:
And when the folk there spy me,
They will all come up to me,
With ‘Here is the fiddler of Dooney!’
And dance like a wave of the sea.

Beautiful Menagerie, I love that a cousin is included in the moment.
Thank you and everyone for your prayers for my cousin it has almost been 2 years since his 6 weeks to 6 months diagnosis. While the original cancer is considered in remission there is a new cancer in his jaw, his jaw bone is protruding into his mouth and it is of course a very rough time, he is spending what will be his last summer by any objective measure at his cabin. Love him like the brother I never had.

Just about 2 hours ago one of the storms in the band passed over New Orleans. Central part received about 5 inches of rain inside of 2 to 3 hours and the city is a huge flooded parking lot.
Traffic is a huge mess throughout the populated two-parish area as the storm hit like a hammer over the extended metro area during the morning commute. The amount that fell was far more than the city’s pumps, or any pumping system built anywhere, could manage. It’s going to take a day or so to pump this messout.
Local news had interviews with city dwellers who were out kayaking a knee deep or better water. Most sounded like post-K carpetbaggers, one was whining about this being a result of strong storms brought on by climate change when it’s a stray storm wandering through from a band of the yet-unformed-but-possible cat 1 hurricane.
The New Orleans-Metairie area is mostly from below to just about 3′ above sea level. Heavy rain falling over Metairie will stand for a bit as it waits to be pumped but there’s a tendency to flow towards the New Orleans saucer, adding to themess. Most of the city is below sea level.
Major concern is that the Mississippi River as it runs thru the city. This has been a really high high-water year. The river’s been above flood stage for a record number of days and the spillway’s been opened a record twice this spring and for a record time. Right now the river’s dropped below the minimal flood level and the Corps was starting to close the bays. The issue is that this storm will pass slowly to the south of the river’s mouth with a couple of days of strong east winds pushing water back up the river. The Corps is predicting the river, being pushed back upstream, will possibly hit between 19 and 19.5 feet above sea level at New Orleans. The levees are designed to protect for sure to 20 feet with a lesser level of protection to 25 feet. Remember, that’s above sea level.
As it stands most of the city except for a very narrow band along the river’s levees is below, well below, sea level. The highest part of the city at ANY TIME is the center of the Mississippi River. That’s right folks, when I say the river’s generally at 14 feet normally, that means the top of the river is 14′ above sea level while the streets we’re walking on are 2 to 3 feet below sea level AND 17′ below the river’s surface. If that predicted 20′-foot level is realized that street will be 23′ below the surface of the river. Help y’all visualize what I mean when I say you can be strolling down Decatur Street in the Quarter and watch seagoing ships floating by ABOVE you?
Keep watching as the guesstimate of where the hurricane goes progresses. If it hits more east of its predicted path its agonna be interesting.

Thanks but our NOLA house is fully insured and we’re at 125 here. Flooding in NOLA is as normal as mosquitos, the news plays it like a cheap guitar every time it rains or you get that halftime bathroom flush during the Super Bowl.

Ah yes, New Orleans the soup bowl.
(Sorry, Z’s, I love what little bit of the city I saw but someone called N’Awlins a soup bowl after Katrina and I never forgot it. Because amidst all the whining about what the government did do, didn’t do, or should have done following the hurricane, the unfortunate truth is that the city was built in a soup bowl and maybe a soup bowl that sits below sea level isn’t the best place to locate a metropolis like N’Awlins.)

If you look at a colored elevation map of the city (can we still say ‘colored??) you’ll see it’s at least b85% below sea level for FEET. If you look at the levees their toes and a small ridge up Esplanade are above sea level but not much. Oh yeah, it’s STILL SINKING!
As I said, the highest point in the city is the surface of the Mississippi river and the levees prevent it from flooding the city at any given time. It’s a losing battle but then we specialize in them that thangs.

The spot was chosen because it was defensible, and they could see ships coming around the bends of the river up and down stream. At the time the banks of the river were at the natural height for a deltaic river. In other words, seemed like a good idea at the time…..

Yeah we’re watching, just paid our NOLA flood insurance a few weeks ago too. If this predicted path keeps going it’s looking like my son in Dallas may get more rain out of it than we will just north of NOLA.

Yeah, Democratic governor reserving the state’s place at the Federal feeding trough early. State still can’t get stuff together nearly 14 years after Katrina.
Gov is also up for reelection this year so he has to look proactive in the area of grabbing DC money early.

Don’t forget to add a little liquid fertilizer every few weeks.
LikeLiked by 3 people
Ohhhh…. didn’t know about that. Good tip!

Vegetables need calcium and magnesium rather than nitrogen. Nitrogen makes pretty leaves, but not fruit. Pick a fertilizer that is meant for vegetables. I use an organic fertilizer with worm castings and bat guano, but a good commercial fertilizer is fine.

Dont forget calcium, or the tomatoes, eggplant and peppers get blossom-end rot.
LikeLiked by 1 person
That’s right. Bone meal is a natural source. I use a granular fertilizer when I plant that has a good source of calcium, and a liquid periodically that also contains calcium.
LikeLike
When I make eggs for breakfast, I toast the shells in the toaster oven to kill any bad bacteria, then crush them and sprinkle around my tomato plants.
Still got blossom end rot last year. I may have given them too much nitrogen, or watered wrong.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Egg shells work, but they are slow. When I plant, I use a slow release fertilizer (you could use egg shells here) when I transplant, then liquid fertilizer later, because it is quick to be taken up by the plants. Earlier this year some of my seedlings were struggling, and it was obvious from the condition of the foliage that they needed calcium. Bone meal did the trick that time.
I know some people who use a whole egg, cracked, when they put their transplant tomatoes in the ground.
LikeLike
A whole egg would be similar to Native Americans putting three small fish in the hole for corn.
Complete protein (source of nitrogen) and mineral source.
Hmm, interesting thought I’ve never thought before: an egg, not including the shell, must contain calcium and other minerals, else how would the chick’s bones form? Unless they’re protein, like fingernails, and mineralize after hatching.

1938 is pretty late in Hitler’s regime for these young men not to have an inkling what he was up to.
But at least one man did: “Note: Under orders from the British ambassador, England gave the Nazi salute inside the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Stan Cullis, of Wolves, refused to perform the salute, and was dropped for the match.” What a bloody shame the others didn’t stand with him and defy the ambassador’s order.
Hope Mr. Cullis made it through with distinction and great honors bestowed on him and that he lived to a ripe old age.

I’ve been reading some books written by Americans who were living in Germany in the Pre-WWII years. It’s fascinating to me that one of them reported that the Germans were hoping Chamberlain would prevent the war or otherwise curb HItler’s power grabs.
Too bad he didn’t. They had to get Churchill in there to get things done.

My grandfather was called back into the German Army in 1935 and, as he was an expert on the Russian military and some of their tactical areas, his job was to plan for the invasion of Russia. It was no secret what Hitler was going to do, Stalin was too busy killing off his top military staff and Roosevelt was in elitist denial.
Hitler was responsible for WWII in Europe but the WWI allies were responsible for Hitler. If they’d have used common sense in the peace terms in 1918 they could have prevented Hitler but….

Nyet, I’m getting low on booze. I plan to drink my way into the weekend starting tomorrow. I’m taking a few days off. Please replenish the bar.

Menagerie, is the lack of booze an indication that the deck staining is coming along just swimmingly ? :0)

Swimmingly is the key word. The main block of our little town flooded last night. In spite of rain, I’ve got front and back porches done, with just the walkways and a small deck to do, but that is still a whole lot of work.
Funny thing is, people on the other side of town, some about 15 miles away, are complaining they need rain, gardens are drying up.
Finally just decided to list the house and finish the staining as I can, so I’m taking a couple days off, since it’s rained me out anyhow. I’m going to stain when I can, and toss stuff out, give it away, pack what I want when I can’t work outside.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

A prayer for Justice Kavanaugh and Gen. Flynn:
Prayer to St. Michael
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do you, O prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits
who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
