Update: California earthquakes, July, 2019

This is this morning’s map of the earthquake swarm. China Lake is at the top. There are around 200 earthquakes in two days.

Fortunately there have been no fatalities or major injuries.

The California National Guard dispatch 200 troops, logistical support and aircraft. The Pentagon had been notified, and the entire California Military Department was put on alert.

Crews in Southern California were assessing the damage Saturday after the region was rattled by another powerful earthquake late Friday evening. The magnitude 7.1 quake caused injuries, sparked fires and closed roadways not no deaths were reported.

The latest earthquake happened just after 8 p.m. local time and was centered in the Mojave Desert near the town of Ridgecrest, which is still recovering from a 6.4 quake on the Fourth of July…

A seismologist in California says scientists believe the sequence of earthquakes striking the Mojave Desert will produce more than 30,000 quakes of magnitude 1 or greater over six months. Dr. Egill Hauksson also said Saturday at Caltech that the probability of a magnitude 7 over the next week has declined to 3 percent.

He says the probability for a magnitude 6 is 27 percent so he would expect one or two of those in the next week…

Multiple earthquakes that struck the Ridgecrest area left Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake “not mission capable until further notice,” the base announced Saturday.

In a Facebook post, the base said that Rear Admiral Bette Bolivar issued an evacuation order for non-essential active duty, drilling reservists, civilian employees, and dependents to evacuate to a radius of 100 miles from Naval Base Ventura County.

I talked to my friend who lives in n. San Diego, near Poway. They didn’t feel anything, but friends of theirs who live closer to the beach did. Weird.

She and her husband have been wanting to move to Texas for a long time, and he can transfer there easily, but he is dragging his feet. This set of quakes may just been what he needs to get him moving. LOL

We had a few quakes while I was there, nothing major but still unsettling. We apparently have a deep, small fault here on the northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, every now and then when the news is really slow the media tries to create some fear about it but with my yearly earthquake insurance at about $100 I don’t sweat it much.

Why vacate the area of the base? A radius of 100 miles. ALL nonessential personnel? What is at that place that could lose containment in an earthquake?
