michellc, if you check in today you ought to look at a group called Custom Chicken Coops in Chattanooga TN on Facebook. They show a picture of a coop that I would very roughly estimate to be about 9×15, typical coop with a house at the back and a screened in area in front. Yep, it’s nice looking, but to me, basic materials.
Starts at $10,000. Now, I am a capitalist and have no problem with profit. But man, I cannot see anybody paying that price for something I know got built for probably $500 bucks or so, and in a few hours if you know what you’re doing. That’s the starting price too. There are optional add ons.
We are looking at a little property out in the country that has a chicken coop. Don’t know if I want chickens. I’d have to think about that. But it’s the typical country coop. Looks like every piece of scrap in the neighborhood went into building it. And I am sure it works just as well for the chickens.

We had chickens when I was a kid, and I’ve never felt warmly towards them, but I might consider having chickens if I lived in the country.
LikeLiked by 5 people
I know nothing about keeping them. I don’t know how much work it is, and how much mess it is, and whether it would be good or bad to have them around with grandkids there. I am thinking no.

My niece has chickens in NC. The foxes and wolves got them the first year. Now she has a proper structure. Now the bobcats come around looking for an easy snack.
LikeLiked by 2 people
You have to have some kind of shelter for chickens where they can be locked in. A rooster also helps to protect the flock.
LikeLiked by 5 people
She had a coop but not well made. Now she has a very sturdy one that does lock. Still won’t keep a bob cat out but it seems that the chicken nuggets aren’t worth the effort it would take to get to them.
Even the local dogs will come to snatch chickens if they are not properly protected.

We had a chicken coop and fenced in chicken yard, so the kids wouldn’t be an issue, I don’t think. It never was for me and my nephews, who were 4 and 8 years younger than I was.
LikeLiked by 3 people
You could try it with a couple of hens and see how you like it. If you don’t then either kill them for chicken pot pie, or sell/give them away.

Stella, that’s why I hate chicken, in the 82ABN Div. we had chicken for every meal for two years. Hot, cold, fried, baked, feathers on or off…..
Having a chicken coop, draws critters you may not want. After a couple of months you have to move the coop, due to soil recovery…..
LikeLiked by 3 people
A chicken tractor works too. You just move it every week or so. People raise rabbits that way also.

Oh dear Lord Wee, that Halloween costume rocks. The dad pictures always make me smile because in my experience, dads actually do stuff like that, and thank God for it.
My husband and his brothers, my own brother, so many just lived fatherhood without too much fuss and the kids got brought along into life and adventures.
One thing I have noticed over and over with my sons and daughters in law that I guess I was too in the moment to think about when I was younger. Over and over I see that my sons will let their kids fall, literally in the case of the youngest ones, and fall as in try and fail, both in physical and other endeavors in the case of the older kids.
The moms are right there to grab a hand or intervene. This is really, really not good for a kid. And my non professional observation shows me that the kids actually like the dad time and have much more fun with them than mom.

REPORT: Barack Obama’s Troubling “Dictator In Exile” Behavior
…We raise these questions after reading this report from WRAL.com:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has received former U.S. President Barack Obama at her office in Berlin for a meeting characterized by German officials as a routine private encounter with a former international peer.
Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, went out his way to emphasize that the chancellor has met repeatedly with ex-heads of state and government “with whom she worked together closely and well for a time.”
We should be demanding to know what was discussed during their private time together.
Seibert continued to stress that the meeting had no implications for current German-U.S. relations.
When the spokesman was asked whether Merkel and Obama were sending a signal to President Donald Trump, Seibert fired back: “I would firmly reject that impression.”
Uh, huh. Seibert doth deny too strongly.
That meeting took place in late November 2017…

We may be seeing a major Left tactic in the 2020 elections taking shape” Deepfake Videos.
The prog push to ‘identify’ ‘phony’ videos posted on social media is drawing Congressional and DoD interest, DARPA’s supposed to be working on a way to detect ‘phony’ videos using defensive technology – just like the way they worked on hacking into every electronic device, including the groundbreaking work on hacking into and taking over the computer in your car.
The news tonite had a piece on Rep Schiff pushing hard for quick Congressional intervention in controlling Deepfake Videos before the 2020 election as the young voters aren’t as easily fooled by Deepfake as are older voters…see where this is going?
Look for more Congressional control over content offered in 2020 and subsequent elections, especially as we ‘older voters’ (wink wink, nudge nudge) are too ****ing stupid to drink the kool aid and eat the Rat droppings.

If you build it, be sure to put hardware cloth on the underneath & bottom couple of feet so critters with claws can’t just tear their way in. Gotta worry about hawks & owls, too. My grandmother had top fencing as well as sides. Big problem is cleaning out the droppings, which are toxic to grass and other living things, incuding your nose….
That said, I have read they are really nice pets, make calming noises, some like to sit in people’s laps and be stroked.

When I used to keep chickens, I once had a Rooster that was a Black Australorpe named Monty. I could hold him in my arms like a baby with his legs 2 ’til 4 and rub his tummy. He’d close his eyes and go to sleep! He was a great Rooster with about 16 hens. He would even help feed the chicks, and guard his whole family from the hawk. If you are only going to have 2 or 3, get hens. Especially if you have close neighbours that might not like being awoken at 5:00 am 7 days a week!
