General Discussion, Wednesday, June 12, 2019

This week is National Men’s Health week, leading up to Father’s Day. Today is National Peanut Butter Cookie Day, which I have a feeling is in conflict with the Men’s Health thing.

Nevertheless, I love a good peanut butter cookie, preferably homemade.

I can’t say that I have a favorite recipe, but I would probably turn to Betty Crocker:

Ingredients

1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 egg
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

Steps

Mix sugars, peanut butter, shortening, butter and egg in large bowl. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cover and refrigerate about 2 hours or until firm.

Heat oven to 375°F.

Shape dough into 1 1/4-inch balls. Place about 3 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten in crisscross pattern with fork dipped into sugar.

Bake 9 to 10 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool 5 minutes; remove from cookie sheet. Cool on wire rack.

The jelly was in the B-1 unit, jam in the B-3. The B-2 had a strange pecan cake that wasn’t bad if you put the jelly or the PB on it, you just had to save or trade around.

Hey Col, you remember the John Wayne chocolate?

Unless you’ve actually eaten it you can’t imagine. Lima beans and ham that went by a name I can’t print here, scrambled eggs in a tin, all sorts of…stuff. Then again it wasn’t meant to be tested by the Beard Foundation, it was meant to fill your stomach while you were out trying not to get killed.

Chocolate that goes ‘SNAP’ and ‘CRUNCH’, break a tooth on that stuff. I used to put part of the chocolate patty kin the coffee and warm it until it melted – extra sugar too. If you were warming the coffee over a pinch of burning C-4 you also got the ‘wake up’ benefits of the C-4 fumes as well as the caffeine .

That’s what they said it was. The PB was….well, it didn’t remind me of any PB I’d ever eaten though it did have roughly the same color and the grape jelly screamed GRAPE!

I do remember the 1/4-inch thick cracker and the bread-in-a-can (that never came out of the can in one piece).

Best thing in them was the cigarettes but then they removed them in the early 70s. The magic was gone.

We also had a creature in VN called the LRRP, Long Range Ration-Patrol. It was HEAVILY carbed, it consisted of packets of dried stuff that you could reconstitute or just choke down dry if you were an early Rambo. It was designed to feed a young troop who’d be out in the field working hard, maybe for a week or more at a time. They also had the almost mythical ability to…bind you up…to a degree that required medical intervention. They were so card heavy that even when properly reconstituted, if you forgot or couldn’t drink enough water while you were out sweating heavily, the body pulled water from your intestines and you ended up walking around with a plug in your internals. They didn’t taste all that good either.

My Mom made the best peanut butter cookies. Never used a recipe. She merely threw stuff together and they always came out wonderfully…not too sweet, crisp not chewy, just right.

I do remember one time, though, when she was making some type of cookie. Don’t know what ingredient she left out. But we all had a great laugh because you could’ve bounced them off the floor they were that rubbery. I’m guffawing up a storm just typing this. Hahahahahahaha! But the taste was fine and we consumed them all.

In my family, we’ve always made what we called “Boiled Cookies”. We used cocoa, butter and sugar. boiled it and then added oats, peanut butter and vanilla. Dropped them on wax paper, and usually ate half of them before they were cool! My daughter now makes them.

When I was a kid I had a friend whose Mom made the best no bake peanut butter cookies. She finally gave me the recipe and I made them all the time. Grew up and forgot the recipe and have never been able to find a no bake peanut butter cookie like it.

Peanut butter cookies is my favorite cookie and one I make all the time. Now I make them with my grandkids. My grandson says whatever pops in his head and is honest to a fault. His other grandpa and his girlfriend came to a dinner one night and she brought peanut butter cookies. He took a bite of cookie and threw it away. She asked him if he didn’t like the cookies and he started telling her how to make a peanut butter cookie and that he and Nanny could show her how to make a cookie that tasted good and wasn’t hard as a rock.

You should never ask a 4 year old a question you don’t want an honest answer too.

What’s really funny these days is that his sister does everything he does. So she’s saying, “cookies no good, Nanny, Bubba and Sissy make good cookies.”
I was about to die hearing their mom try to shut them up.

I remember those days. My son infuriated my mother-in-law one time by telling her that her food tasted nasty. She made the same mistake by asking him why he wasn’t eating. I tried the same tactic to explain to him that you just be polite and say you’re not hungry or don’t like certain foods to only be told the same thing she was told, “that would be a lie.”

A friend’s son, who by the way hardly ever spoke because he was so shy, when he was about 4 went with his mom to pick up her Avon from a new lady. The woman was hugely fat and as soon as she opened the door, he said, “Boy, you’re fat.” His mother told him to hush, but he just repeat, “But Mom, she is fat.” Everything she said just made him repeat it. The lady was not amused. 🙄

When my daughter was about 3, we were in line to check out at the supermarket. Out of the blue she said, in a very loud voice, “Mom, remember when daddy hit you?” This was long after her dad and I were separated, and he did slap me during an argument, but it wasn’t as if he beat me up (and I hit him back). Where kids come up with things sometimes, I do not know, but it was very embarrassing.

Kids will say anything and everything. My daughter told my mom once that it took us a long time to get there because Mom and Dad took a shower together and took forever. We did not take a shower together, he jumped in the shower as I was getting out and she walked into the bathroom at that exact time.
The way she told the story though made it sound like we had to play in the shower before we could leave the house.

One of my most embarrassing moments was in a Dr’s office when one of my sons was around 4. This woman was huge and had the largest butt I had ever seen. He started yelling, “that woman has a big butt, look at that big butt.” No matter how hard I or his Dad tried to get him to be quiet all he could keep repeating was, “but she has a huge butt.”

Half the people in the waiting room were trying to cover up their laughter, the other half looked like they felt for us. The woman with the world’s largest butt was glaring and I was afraid was about to sit on us when she went to walk by us and he said, “look out Dad she’s going to hit you with her big butt!”

On my way home yesterday, I was flying down the hwy at about 70 mph and saw an alligator in the grass just off the road. He raised his head as I went by. I think he was probably about 10′ long because I don’t think I would have seen him in the tall grass if he hadn’t been. Then, on just a little ways further there was a large cat on the side of the road. Not large like a bobcat, but bigger. I figure a puma. It had a long tail. It started across the road and then turned and ran back in the grass when he saw my car. No kidding. I am not lying.

Because FB are doing their best to run off everyone and there are people who are so willing to help them by reporting Farm groups, we started asking questions before we approve people. The animal rights nuts brag about getting groups removed, so one of the questions is, “Do you support animal rights, ie HSUS, PETA, etc.?”

Either in Oklahoma we have a lot of people who support animal rights or are stupid and think the correct answer is yes.

    G’afternoon all.
A story and a warning for we naive people.

A week or two ago a couple stopped by and asked to mow my yard. I agreed and offered to pay them for some more yard work, which they were to return and accomplish on Monday. Two days later she calls me and asks to borrow $300 as their truck battery died and they needed to truck to haul their mower, etc.

For the first time ever in my naive life, I trusted a stranger. Yup, gave them the $300 (stupid stupid stupid…). Five days later she shows up w/a sob story about a UTI, blah, blah, blah, and insisted they were good people.
I told her I knew what she was, a thief and a liar, and told her to get off my property.
I had already decided this would be a test to see if God wanted me to financially help more people.
Thanks, Lord, learned my lesson. Will be mowing my own yard again.

The Lord did send me an angel, though. Two older guys showed up last night & offered to mow my yard for free. i asked why, & explained I was no longer a trusting fool. It was part of his tithe for his church.
They were finished, including hedge trimming and cleanup, in half hour. They beeped as they drove away. No names, nothing. Just another angel in my life. Jesus took care of me again, absolutely NO idea why, as I of all people do NOT deserve it. smh

    Have a Great Afternoon
