Quote of the day …

“One of the ironies today is that people are saying it is President Trump who is shredding our institutions. I really see no evidence of that. From my perspective, the idea of ‘resisting’ a Democratically elected president and basically throwing everything at him, and really changing the norms on the grounds that we have to stop this president. That’s where the shredding of our norms and institutions is occurring…”

Attorney General William Barr

I do not like the use of the words “Democratically elected” for a couple of reasons: 1). We are a Constitutional Republic and a Nation of Laws, not a democracy. The Democrats say Hillary was elected democratically or by the popular vote. 2). The Founders view democracy as something akin to “mob rule”. President Trump was elected according to the manner prescribed in the US Constitution. There was a popular vote and vote by the Electoral College, the latter being included in the Constitution to protect the American people from a candidate like Hillary Clinton. By mentioning Clinton, I am only referring a candidate who obtains a large number of votes from a relatively small geographic area. When the Constitution was drafted the smaller states were concerned about the fewer larger states from dominating the

Good point. Language is important. “lawfully elected” would be a better choice of words.

All of our great leaders have called the United States of America a democracy knowing full well that the use of the word was under the umbrella of a Representative Republic. That doesn’t mean that the people who have used the term are ignorant of the Electoral College, of our representatives or have any other cerebral short coming it just means that they understand the use of the word.

Of course AG Barr is knowledgeable of the fact that we are a Republic.

This is a particularly frustrating point for me when we attack our own over the term Democracy. Barr’s use was not incorrect ir even sloppy it was used in proper context.

Justice Scalia used the term in legal documents once writing that “The Supreme Court is a threat to American democracy.”

“Persuade your fellow citizens it’s a good idea and pass a law. That’s what democracy is all about. It’s not about nine superannuated judges who have been there too long, imposing these demands on society.” __Justice Antonin Scalia

The United States of America is a Constitutional Federal Republic. A form of Democracy.

Please don’t post quotes from our Founding Fathers about how the United States is not a Democracy. I am not stating we are a Democracy in the way the Founding Fathers clearly warned us against, I am using democracy as did Barr, Scalia and many many others. I am well aware of the quotes and I agree whole heartedly with them there is no inconsistency in what Barr said and understanding that we are a Republic.

Sorry I really don’t want to come across as bitchy but I find no reason to criticize Barr’s statement other than misguided purism and that has gotten us no where in a hand basket.

I was not criticizing AG Barr, had I been doing that, I would have addressed him in my comment rather than throwing it out there.
I was cautioning against the word as misused by the Left. I have come across numerous headlines, questions, comments, etc “Trump is destroying our Democracy”. The current sentiment regarding the Electoral College is a move for Democracy according to those that seek to eliminate it or bypass it in 2020.

I take you at your word.

Here is where I would caution you, if you want to criticize the Left please make it clear. Don’t use a statement made by our AG who when questioned about repercussions about doing what is Constitutionally correct rather than appeasing the political Left said something along the line “Eh I’m old. We all die.”

I agree with you 100% on the Left’s dangerous move toward a pure democracy and the unconstitutional push to eradicate the electoral college. It would take a Constitutional Amendment and the first “hurrah” has already been vetoed by a democratic governor. There is simply no lawful way it can be implemented before the 2020 election. That said the Left will continue to try and destroy America and it will continue to fail.

I am 100% behind your diligent stand against the tyranny of the Left.

As many have said democracy is tyranny of the majority.
