Czarina knows I have to post this.

She is, or was, terrified of dobermans, almost scared stiff. Once when we were in Florida I took her to meet an old friend, a woman who was a doberman freak, she owned a Borong’s Warlock pup (they were HUGE) and rehabilitated dobs that had…been problems.

‘d told the old friend about CZ’s wariness so she put them up (she had three I think) in a back room with a baby gate across the opening. We came in and sat down as she went to get us something to drink. The dobs were curious and this gaggle of heads kept on appearing over the gate, their blood stained, razor sharp claws, (Cz’s description) constantly and nervously tapping on the floor as they anticipated coming out and turning her body into a lifeless pile of bloodied shreds.

My friend didn’t help the situation much as she talked about one having been unresponsive to the owner’s orders and the other two having bitten their owners, she was rehabing them and they were alllllll better now (explanation accompanied by more heads looking at Cz, more claw tapping and some excited low-volume whines).

My friend was always a bit impulsive so probably moved by Cz’s whiter shade of pale and the sweat soaking thru her shirt, gets up in mid talk and LETS THE DOGS OUT. Immediately all three noisily and wriggly claw-dance directly over to Cz on the couch, ignoring my friend and me. Their dancing, trying to lick her face, wriggling (one’s doing that ‘jaw popping’ excited dobs do so well) and generally trying to get Cz to interact. My friend’s just going on talking, Cz’s turning so white I was sure she was going to turn transparent and I’m contemplating what I’m going to do after what appears to be my 2nd divorce within 5 years.

My friend keeps talking on and, declaring the introduction over, puts the dogs away. Color starts to return to Czarina and I start to believe that maybe the divorce won’t be all that acrimonious. By the time the visit was over Cz could get off the couch and walk unaided so I figured that the big corner had been turned. We don’t talk much about that visit.

I used to have a neighbor with a female Dob. She would put a pink bow in her hair after grooming, and the postman used to leave a cookie in the mail slot for her every day. She was a sweetie.

Dobs are no different than any other dog, it’s how they’re raised and treated.

My friend had her dobs left alone with her daughters when they were babies, quite the contrary, they protected those girls into their teens. Their bloodthirsty image comes from their being the USMC’s official war dog, their use as a police dog and some really bad Hollywood depictions.

They are a created giant terrier bred for their agility and protective nature. I never had a problem with one though Czarina was bit by one when she was small. Then again more than a few people want to bite her as an adult so there’s that factor.
