I post this every so often but back in the 90s we had a SR-721 make an emergency landing at the Naval Air Station south of New Orleans. It was on an undisclosed mission when it developed engine problems and the small base there was the closest US base where it could land. They had to fly a team and parts in to replace it and in the meantime it was sequestered in a hanger all by itself. It took a few days but they fixed it and it was scheduled for a takeoff.
On the day it left I was able to be in a position to watch it fire up, do its preflight and taxi out…impressive. The takeoff was awesome but the pilot rolled back at altitude, did a come around, dropped down and did a high-speed right down the runway, nosed up and rocketed out of sight. Apparently the pilot had a great time while he was waiting for his ride to get fixed and wanted to say ‘thanks’. That was beyond impressive.
You can imagine my surprise when I was visiting Eglin AFB a few years later and at their museum there was a SR-71 parked outside, they’d retired them.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Yep, as far as I know, every one of them are in museums around the country.
They were great but outrageously expensive to fly. Satellites came into their time of more efficient and cheaper high altitude surveillance.
Jane’s book of aircraft pegged them at about 2500mph, but most of us knew they flew closer to 3000+mph…cuz the military never does and shouldn’t put out real info for the enemy to read and know. In aircraft, I relate the BB to the most beautiful woman I ever knew. Yeah, if a jet could be a mistress and lover, I could have married her! π
A joke among pilots when a SAM was incoming…
Fly higher and speed up!
Cuz back then, Habu could fly higher and faster than that days SAMs.
Wow to American engineering…the best of the best!
C…you and the wife have a wonderful week!
Shalom and best!

In a few areas after they shelved the beast they had to bring in the old U-2, those satellites are neat but they have some limitations and the other sides know what they are. They could outrun the older SAMs but those newer S-400s…
There’s also the story about the Aurora replacement that’s not been confirmed but there’s a lotta chatter.
LikeLiked by 1 person
S400s are about mach14 as far as exo-atmospheric function. But even within-atmosphere both the US and Russia top out at mach 4 to 5, still certainly faster than the BB. Interesting, our old Sprint missiles in the 70s could get to mach 10 in less than 10 seconds, top ceiling about 20 miles.
The Ruskies didn’t have anything comparable to our Sprints in the 70s….at least as far as I think.
U2…gotta think about Gary Powers.
Anyway, c u bk here next Monday.

Good Monday morning all you Stellars!
For the benefit of friends over here than may not make it over to the Presidential thread, I am copying and pasting my weekly military tribute post that is my reply-response to Rynn69’s weekly Monday tribute post. I had to post it before Rynn today because they have moved their time slot to 6am Monday and I will be off before then shortly.
Anyway, I put in a couple of additions for you guys here at Stella’s Place.
Hope you are blessed and hope you all have a blessed week!

Good early Monday morning, Treepers.
Here we go again remembering our military brothers and sisters: those who sacrificed all, thoses who are still sacrificing, and all of our great living Veterans, some of whom are Treeper family here in the CTH…..{and at Stella’s Place.}
The music military tribute video is a little long, 8 mins, but well worth the watch. It was made for Memorial Day in 2014. There is a very nice change of songs midway through. It’s kind of a heart-ripper, but these things run like deep flowing rivers in our hearts, souls and remembrances. So don’t worry about a little dust in your eyes.
I will be glad when comes the time for God to say, Enough! No more war. No more heart-wrenching separations. No more tears and broken hearts of families and children left behind. But that is His call of the changing of the guard and times and His call only. O! For that day of the End of the greatest War, the War of all mortal history from Beginning to End, for the rivers to be crystal clear and not flowing blood-red.
In the meantime, I and others like Rynn69, eagledriver50, Gunny66, retired USMC, Sundance, Ad rem and staff, and all you great, faithful, nation-loving patriots dwelling on every limb and branch of this great Treehouse that Sundance and his diligent, marvelous staff have so wonderfully built for a refuge and great camaraderie we all enjoy here, will keep on remembering our great National Treasures, our Soldiers, our flesh and blood, our very true hearts…….
{…and the same for Stella, Menagerie and all of you faithful patriots here on Stella’s site!}
Always and forever as long as there is breath in us. We do and will thank God for them!
Wherever it is and in whatever personal circumstances of your individual stations and positions in life and in your communities, keep up the good fight and pay whatever price you must pay for that highest ideal of the good and righteous cause of our God, our Families, our Nation, our President, Rule of Law, Liberty, Freedom and Justice for all…and yes, for each other, blood family or not. Here in the Conservative Tree House – {and here at Stella’s Place} – WE. ARE. FAMILY!
Shalom, God speed and bless every one of you this week.
AS
PS: Grandma, God has His Eye on your daily faithful prayer here! Seriously!
…….and those that follow up after you like BetsyRoss Rocked, Kristin DeBacco, llamamama3, Dutchman and all in agreement with your prayer and praying!
A special thanks to Valerie Curren who so encouraged me this week with her prayers and graphics posted on the prayer request thread. All of you are a great gift of our God’s Heart. May the bread you have cast upon the waters return 100-fold to you.

I thrill to present these military tributes every Monday morning. It’s about the only time I have during the week to get on so I take advantage of that to do this.
It’s almost become duty to me to do so as a continuing reminder of that sacred honor and highest duty of service to one’s nation.
Next week we will be using the Navy Hymn, ETERNAL FATHER, STRONG TO SAVE as our theme music tribute video.
God speed….and thank you for your service!

And back when the US military was just waking up from the screwup we’d made when Nixon did away with the Chemical Corps and we started bringing the NBC folks back. I went to some of the early training when they didn’t have simulants and you trained with live agents. GI life insurance didn’t pay that much back then either.

I remember those before O days. Big motivation to become an Officer. Admitted to college under the bootstrap program. Then Commissioned then, 28-32 years goes by fast…….

I turned down the last direct commission in 5th Army back around ’86. I really should, in hindsight, have taken it but I so loved my career field and back then an officer could go to bed on Friday an Infantry officer and wake up on Monday to orders making him a Transportation of Logistics officer. I watched O-3s to O-6s get their career fields changed, some multiple times, too often for comfort.
Then the top 3 enlisted grades got respect, we even had our own NCO clubs, so it wasn’t all that bad. Then Clinton came along.

Today, my DH came home from work with a lovely card from some customers from his work. He has a Navy hat that he wears quite often, and it’s starting to look a bit worse for wear. The card thanked him for his service, and came with a new Navy hat! It drove him to tears! They know he’s served in The Royal Navy of England, but felt he deserved acknowledgement as well. After 22 years in the service, it’s the first time anyone has done such a thing. He says “If you know anyone that has served, do something nice for them”. We’ve been married for nearly 30 years, and I sure appreciate him!

TY for relating and posting this wonderful experience. It cheers the heart.
I attended a graduation ceremony a couple of weeks ago and got the chance to thank 3 of our services. One was a woman Marine in full dress uniform. Her daughter was graduating and going into the Marines. Another was an older veteran of the 2nd Marine Division and the 3rd was a Navy officer in full dress uniform. Kinda made my night.
One of the kindest things people can do is thank those who have been and presently are in service for our nation.
As political as the VN war was, I still cringe to think about how so much of America treat our Nam vets. It was quite shameful.
I also honor vets who have served in the services of our Allies. Glad somebody did for yours!
Shalom and God speed.
PS: Btw, in my military tribute for next Monday morning I will be using the Navy Hymn, ETERNAL FATHER, STRONG TO SAVE as my theme video.
