Frank Davis was THE New Orleans ‘home cooked’ Chef, the twinspan bridge on I-10 connecting New Orleans with Slidell is named in his honor.
For decades Frank epitomized the NOLA food that you’d eat at home, not so much in restaurants. He had a regular spot on a local morning TV program and many of us lived for his special Thanksgiving and Christmas meals he fix and present for your approval.
Here’s Frank’s recipe for chicken ettoufee, a bit more realistic and less time consuming than trying to find good shrimp or crawfish. You can do this any time of the year and it’s great leftovers:

Afternoon Z’s! Had a tiny ray of sunlight hit me long enough to quit singin’ “Ol’ Man Ribber” for a minute. Gawd, de Red be fat.

Criks here are high but dropping fast, then agin’ at our’n altitude (125 feetses) it’s all down hill to the coast.
We had ~4″ over three days but jes to our north about four miles they flooded and 20 miles north the rain gauges done stopped at 11″.

We hit that here a few back with that low-grade hurricane that blew thru. I was outside the farm, about 8 miles south and when I got back I couldn’t get in as the roads were all flooded heavily. I spent the night in my truck in some field with a pizza and a six pack. By just a bit after dawn the water had dropped enough to where I could dodge the worst ford in my Chevy. We drains fast.

The Psychology of Progressive Hostility

In his remarkable book The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion, Haidt recalls a telling experiment. He and his colleagues Brian Nosek and Jesse Graham sought to discover how well conservative and what Haidt terms ‘liberal’ (ie: progressive) students understood one another by having them answer moral questions as they thought their political opponents would answer them. “The results were clear and consistent,” remarks Haidt. “In all analyses, conservatives were more accurate than liberals.” Asked to think the way a liberal thinks, conservatives answered moral questions just as the liberal would answer them, but liberal students were unable to do the reverse. Rather, they seemed to put moral ideas into the mouths of conservatives that they don’t hold. To put it bluntly, Haidt and his colleagues found that progressives don’t understand conservatives the way conservatives understand progressives. This he calls the ‘conservative advantage,’ and it goes a long way in explaining the different ways each side deals with opinions unlike their own. People get angry at what they don’t understand, and an all-progressive education ensures that they don’t understand.

That is very interesting, and very informative. I had not even thought about that angle, but wow. There is also the fact that almost all liberals do not believe conservatives have a right to believe differently than they do.

It was a really good article. Lots to think about. When I was growing up and in school we were encouraged by our teachers to look at both sides of issues, and for a short time I was on a debate team. Because I was so opinionated my teacher would often assign me the position I disagreed with. I hated that at the time, but I know see what he was trying to do for me.
I smile as I think about him. He was young, hip, black, with a large afro and those colorful seventies clothes. It makes me sad to think that the upcoming generations don’t have teachers like that.

It continues to be amazing, though, that lefties seem to collectively think those on the right are the intolerant ones. But we all know that’s what they’ve been taught. Teaching students to think is certainly not in vogue. Does anyone believe anymore in the saying attributed to Voltaire…”I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”?
Unfortunately, some righties use mighty divisive speech against other conservatives today, too…and the left pounces on the story then makes the conservative who speaks against, say, President Trump, a celebrity for a while until they move on to another.
It certainly is an interesting time to live.

I wonder how much of this also comes from people who are raised with their parents unwilling to disciple them and from never being told that they’re wrong, or that merely participating isn’t enough to make them all winners.
I don’t know exactly what I’m trying to say, but the incivility and the unwillingness to be wrong have to come from somewhere deeper than just political views.

Funny thing is I have a military armorer’s manual from the mid-60s that shows versions of the original M-16 designed for an external aircraft hard mount that look zakly like the one hanging from the drone. There was also a real weird shorty version made as a port-firing device for the Bradley. It sorta fell outta favor when the Army couldn’t stop the troops from unscrewing it from the vehicle and firing it freehand – it was uncontrollable.
Beginning to look like maybe these two versions were sitting in the ‘reject’ section of the warehouse, had a few drinks…

Stella… we got our little patio planter set up this morning! I sent you a picture of it. It was very fun putting it together and it may be temporary and I’ll have to try out other options, but it was a fun learning experience.

I think he liked it fine, although my daughter reports that his cleaning skills aren’t all they should be! He’s happy to be sleeping in his own bed, he says, and thinks he has a job lined up with the park district, working at the community pool. Fingers crossed.

Yes! We put the hummingbird feeder close to it, too. Hoping the flowers will help draw them in. I told my husband I’d like to plant some flowering trees nearby, eventually, so the hummers have some foliage to hide in. We will just do a little here and there and see how it goes.

I wait until it’s dumb enough to run up a tree and think it’s gone unnoticed, then I ship an inch of vine out at ground level. The forests of ones just starting in in the forest bottom we mow and poison.
Czarina’s violently allergic to them they grow on the ground creeping towards her. As for me I may get one bump that mildly itches for a couple of days.
We have an old country friend who says the way to become non-allergic is to make a tea of poison ivy and drink it regularly. Fat chance there.

Why would he even want to attend, considering that he dislikes President Trump so much? The Queen doesn’t want any discord at an event honoring the President of the United States. She understands that it is the office and the country, not the man, that is being honored.

We just got to watch such a beautiful sunset. It was the sky that was so unusual. It was a deep, deep blue like periwinkle. I really like sitting in bed and watching sunsets.
