Large jets aren’t flown anymore by the pilots; computers fly them and pilots manage the computers. See http://www.b737.org.uk/flightdeck737max.htm

Harrowing to think about the passengers at those last moments. They must have known they were headed down with throttle open.

Do you remember when passengers could watch video feed of their take-offs and landings? I remember when a plane crashed at O’Hare and it was equipped with those cameras. It must have been terrifying.

A very close friend lost his son on a commuter flight from Indianapolis to Chicago. The wings iced and the plane went straight down into the ground. He was haunted by the thought that his son must have known he was about to die.

Yes, family members of victims have that extra burden to carry forever. And survivors of horrible accidents have guilt that seems to remain. Some feel it daily, others keep the memories submerged for a time and then they pop up without warning.

In the terrible airport accident in the late 70s on Tenerife Island, which is still the worst crash ever, an off-duty flight attendant decided not to board the KLM so that she could remain with her boyfriend on the island. She was the only survivor from the KLM flight. Many dead but also many survivors on the Pan Am which was stuck by the KLM, shearing the top of the plane right off. The woman said she carried that guilt with her always.
