As a kid I can remember these things were big deals, but now…meh. Then again my parents and their peers were WWLL vets so there was a reason for them to remember.
My peers were Vietnam vets but now, some 50 years out (shudder), it’s getting to be dark, ancient and increasingly irrelevant history. I still have a ;been there’ connection with Desert Storm and GWOT vets but it’s more of a ‘WOW! You’re %^$#@&% OLD!’ type of connection. It’s now VN vets = heavily irrelevant, Desert Storm vets = rapidly approaching irrelevant, GWOT = at their peak.

I’m in a strange niche myself. My parents were 40 and 41 when I was born, so my cousins (and my brother) fought in WWII and Korea. Most of them are gone now, of course. I wasn’t born until after WWII.
