Activist Tactic – Confront a target, then blame the victim

The most recent and prevalent story of leftist outrage is, of course, the supposed confrontation by Catholic male students and a supposed Native American Elder. We have heard all of the false tales of how the boys surrounded him, taunting and frightening the man. Since the young man in the photo (above) chose not to confront the man in any way – he did not touch him, move towards him, talk to him – the only complaint that could be made against him is that he ‘smirked’. Twitter is overrun with tweets about that disgusting smirker.

You may have read that there is such a thing as a Facecrime, as described by George Orwell in his novel, 1984. That is true.

It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself – anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called.

If you watch the entire video of the incident, you will see that the young man did not ‘smirk’ during the entire time. He did smile at the man, though, as you can see in most of the photos of the ‘smirk’.

William Jacobson (Legal Insurrection) wrote about a similar incident he experienced in 2014 at Cornell University. He first describes the tactic:

The recent interaction in DC between high school students (one in particular) and an older activist who is Native American reminded me of a warning I once received from a colleague as to how I needed to prepare myself if I ever was in a hostile crowd or confronted.

A classic leftist/occupy activist tactic, I was warned, was to confront a target and immediately start screaming that the target was being aggressive even though that was not true.

Unsuspecting people in the vicinity would not start recording the incident until there was this commotion. The videographers accompanying the provocateur also would edit the video to start when the provocateur started screaming. The target, not knowing what was about to happen, would not be prepared for it, and might even take the bait, such as in pushing the person away physically.

Regardless of what the target did or didn’t do, you would have video of the innocent target being portrayed as the aggressor, and the provocateur portrayed as the victim.

Next, Professor Jacobson tells what happened to him:

After an Ithaca activist and campus members of Students for Justice in Palestine disrupted the assembly meeting, I went into the vestibule of the building with my cell phone camera in hand. The main aggressor then pulled this stunt on me, falsely screaming that I put my camera in her face (the video shows otherwise). She also shouted “back away from me” even though I had not moved an inch. Another SJP activist, who is still active in campus anti-Israel politics, approached me and told me to stop filming even though I had every right to film in a public space.

If I didn’t have my video, it would be my word against theirs as to who was being aggressive, and their video alone would be the documentary evidence.

He goes on to describe another, similar, incident:

That same tactic was used against pro-Israel students at Cornell later in 2014 by the same Ithaca activist and other SJP students, as I documented in Cornell Pro-Israel students taunted: “F**k You Zionist scums”.

Look how the provocateur got inches from a pro-Israel student’s face, and started screaming “don’t touch me, don’t touch me” even though she was the aggressor and had not been touched. She then taunted the target to hit her, “slap me, do it, do it.” She also made a spitting sound (not clear if she actually spit) in the target’s face. The targeted student had the composure not to take the bait.

Click on the link to see the videos he describes. Professor Jacobson’s summary of the DC incident last Friday:

The student had the composure to do nothing but stand there. He didn’t take the bait, and that was the right decision. Of course, that student now is being accused of showing white privilege by not reacting.

Only because there was more complete video did the media narrative of the student as the aggressor change.

There is nothing new under the sun when it comes to leftist activist tactics. Getting in someone’s face and then playing victim for the cameras is one of the oldest tricks in the book.

And even with extensive video of the incident – hours of it – there are many who are still doubling down on the story that the students surrounded and harassed the poor old Native American ‘Elder’.

This man has done similar things before. He lives in my home state of Michigan, and made the news four years ago for confronting Eastern Michigan University students on their own property, then calling the police to complain about how he was assaulted by one of the students. By his account, the students had been mocking Indians, with face paint and feathers in their hair, so he said he could not let that kind of behavior go without chastising them. He was just innocently taking a walk past their house. Of course, there was nothing to see by the time the police arrived. You can read (and watch video) about that HERE. By the way, the EMU mascot used to be the Huron (Native American), but was forced to change it to the Eagle.

This same man traveled to North Dakota to protest the Keystone XL pipeline.  In fact, he gained a lot of notoriety there, and was written about in such publications as Vogue, and Yahoo News. Here he is in a photo from the Billings Gazette.

Nathan Phillips and Raymond Kingfisher, center, march out of the Oceti Sakowin camp with hundreds of other Dakota Access Pipeline protesters during the evacuation of the camp mandated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Gov. Doug Burgum on Feb. 22, 2017

The point is, this man is a practiced activist, and is FULLY AWARE of what he did. It was planned, recorded by his friends, and a clip put out there for the media to see. The media fell for it completely. I’m sure they were all only too happy to do so; that is, until other video which was more extensive and complete surfaced to show that it was all a sham.

From Facebook (shared by Clarice Feldman):

Twitter suspended a suspicious account Monday reportedly responsible for framing the initial media narrative around the Covington Catholic High School students’ confrontation with Nathan Phillips.
The social media platform suspended the account with the username @2020fight for suspicious activity after CNN Business alerted Twitter that, while the account bio said it belonged to a California school teacher named Talia, the profile’s picture was that of a blogger from Brazil. Analytics revealed that @2020fight’s post of and caption for a minute long video of the confrontation between the Covington students and Phillips became the main version of the video shared on social media, shaping a narrative that accused the students of bigotry.

“This MAGA loser gleefully bothering a Native American protester at the Indigenous Peoples March,” @2020fight’s caption for the video read.

This appears to have been well-orchestrated from the outset with megaphoning pressies–who was behind it? Inquiring minds want to know. This is the story. Pressies just didn’t happen to find this loonie twitter post and run with it. Start with Media Matters when investigating.

Jack Cashill has a really good column today:

What the right should learn from Covington Catholic flap

“I deleted my original tweet and we also took down a strongly worded post by my colleague Nick Frankovich that relied on the incomplete video,” wrote National Review editor Rich Lowry. “It’s another reminder — even for an old hand like me — that it’s best not to make snap judgments and to wait for all sides of a controversy to have a chance to be heard.”

Sorry, Rich, you have pulled the wrong lesson from this incident. What you should have pointed out to your readers immediately is that the Washington Post, CNN, and the rest were prepared to ruin the lives of some adolescents, who had come to Washington to march for life, to score a cheap political point.

The National Review’s coverage of the Covington flap mirrors its treatment of the Trump presidency. Its editors, like those at the erstwhile Weekly Standard, have been playing by the left’s rules since the National Review denounced the John Birch Society nearly 60 years ago. Said one editor at the time in the way of explanation, “We can’t afford to jeopardize the grudging status we’ve earned in the Liberal community.”

  3. My takeaway was the bile and hatred put forth by many MSM columnists and reporters on their personal Twitter accounts. Quite an eye opener. Also a few celebrities with millions of followers put forward hate. My first Twitter response to this on the weekend was actually to some priests and the Covington High School who were so quick to condemn the students. I Tweeted ” Let’s wait and see ,the boys side of the story before we rush to judgement. Social media can be manipulated”. It’s all a matter of perspective. Some saw a “smirking boy”. My first reaction to the video was, why is this old guy in the boys face beating a drum”. I think for 16 year old boys they acted with great patience and decorum when set upon by two disparate groups of adult political activists. They should be congratulated for their smiling forbearance rather than condemned.

Wise words but they fall on deaf ears when people have an agenda. Liberals simply do not care about the truth.

There are still nuts who are supporting the “Elder” and condemning the “smirking boy”, including Kirsten Powers:

They, those who still support Phillips and condemn the boys are evil incarnate. They are choosing a lie to hurt innocent people.

Having the perspective, and it is not an overall positive one, of having put my sons through Catholic schools, I can assure you that most of my rage, and yes, it would be rage indeed if those were my boys, would be directed at the school, the priests who runs the parish associated with the school, the Diocesan head of schools, and the bishop. And I am danged sure there would be leftover rage for all those who tuned in on social media, but I’d tend to business first.

As a parent, it is my first assumption that schools would be protective of my children, and fair and thorough in investigating any situations that arose, on or off campus. The truth should be the goal, not the social justice bull shite the Church has mired herself in.

You choose, Catholic schools administrators. Your fondness for the latest liberal talking points or the protection and education of the children whose parents pay you a huuuuuge amount of money every year.

I wonder how stuff plays out in another generation. Through extreme sacrifice, our family was able to squeak out a Catholic education for our kids. We cannot even begin to do that for our grandkids, and only one of our sons would be able to pay that tuition if he chose to. Catholic schools are unaffordable except for the rich, and the poor who are given scholarships. There is no middle class, and only a few poor kids.

Catholic hospitals and health care centers are no more affordable than any other healthcare in this country. Catholic nuns and brothers who run retirement homes for the elderly and infirm are accessible only to the very well off, at least the ones around here.

At times, I question my financial support of the Church. Other than supporting the parish I worship in, it sure doesn’t look like any monies I donate will ever benefit me or any of my family.

Once, in just about any sizable city there were immigrant built thriving parishes and schools. Irish, German, Polish, Italian, each had neighborhoods built around churches, schools, and cemetaries. Almost all built and populated by blue collar workers.

They are all gone now, the Church cries at her lost members. But are they looking for the real reason people are gone? I don’t really think so.

I agree with you 100% as I’ve said Covington High School and the Dioceses of Covington should definitely be on the list of defendants.

At times, I question my financial support of the Church.

I do not financially support my church anymore. For many reasons you probably already know. I’ve left one of my Catholic Charities that I donated thousands of hours to and raised thousands of dollars for because they are more worried about their false god of social justice than they are being simple christians. They worry more about the snapshot than substance and it breaks my heart.

They are all gone now, the Church cries at her lost members. But are they looking for the real reason people are gone? I don’t really think so.

              Agreed.

I sent my daughters to Catholic High School. It was not Catholic in any way. I will not get into that right now. They did get a phenomenal secular education. I did play a part in demanding the new principal not return his position after he put an Obama sign in his school paid for front lawn.

              I weep with you.

As you know, Levant is a Canadian. And though he has many fans from other countries, likely this is an informational vid for his Canadian audience to whom their media has lied about this incident…

Ezra Levant: Media Lynching of MAGA Catholic teenager backfires

    ————
BTW, Levant has been convicted in Alberta “courts” without even being notified of the charges or being told when the trial was being held; so it was held without him or his attorneys. Bizarre? You betcha. Their premiere, Rachel Notley, is certifiably nuts, IMO, besides being a socialist–maybe that’s the same thing? She instigated this whole suit against Levant and Rebel Media contrary to Canadian law and expects to get away with it. Amazing!

This is amazing. What a complete dangerous fool.

This ‘Black Israelite” from Brooklyn sparked the Covington controversy.

    https://nypost.com/2019/01/22/this-hebrew-israelite-from-brooklyn-sparked-the-covington-controversy/

“The word of God — it sparked it all,” said the man, who identified himself as “Chief Ephraim Israel” of the House of Israel.

“They seen what they’ve done. They’ve been told. I believe they are from Kentucky. They’ve never been spoken like that to by a black or Hispanic guy in their lives. The words of God.”

“It was piercing. Their souls was getting ripped. They were catching darts and ninja stars all into their soul.”

“a bunch of f—-ts made out of incest.”

Israel said the students tried in vain to shut him up by loudly reciting what Sandmann has called “school spirit chants.”

“They started doing their chants, so I was cutting into them. I called them dogs. They sounded like dogs,” he said.

“At the time, the kids took a position. They was all on one knee like the offensive line and the defensive line. And it looked like they was going to rush us and that’s when [Phillips] came.”

I guess it would never occur to a race baiting demon that the boys might be praying?

Note that this “madman” is getting his talking points from someone as he was sure to make note that he was berating the Native American and that the Native American was “just trying to help.”

    Spit.

They can shove that Native American bull too. Indigenous peoples warred and killed each other off for thousands of years before explorers got here. Where did the Anasazi go? What of the hundreds of thousands, or is it even millions, of human sacrifices made by the Aztec?

The days that I bought into that sob story are over. Indians got a raw deal. So did Saxons, Celts, the Irish, the Scots, and I can’t even name all the countries dealt some crap in various world wars. Jews the world over and through their history.

Men kill other men. It’s never been pretty, much of the time it’s for crap reasons, but it has happened over and over.

Through my lens I have seen no people jump off the history pages unsullied.

Stella, either you are in cahoots with Cornell Law School, or you are on a higher intellectual plane than you may realize.

Professor William Jacobson had a flashback this weekend over the Catholic school kids, and spoke with Larry O’Conner this afternoon about it.

“Larry spoke with Professor William Jacobson, the founder of Legal Insurrection Blog and a Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Securities Law Clinic at Cornell Law School, about his latest article, “Leftist Activism 101: Get in someone’s face and then play victim for the cameras”.” 08:44

The Huron were wiped out by the Iroquois – a group they were a branch of. Then even a mascot of the Huron gets wiped out because of their fellow Natives.
