30-ish years ago my parents & I drove from Detroit to Chicago to witness one of my college friends, a Jamaican, become a US citizen. It was special & embarrassing since the to-be citizens knew things about our country & had to demonstrate that knowledge–& I hadn’t ever heard much of that crucial info in my sadly-lacking public school “education”…
