Sun Sentinel

Landfall is official. Hurricane Michael has come ashore as a Category 4 storm near Mexico Beach, Florida, with catastrophic winds of 155 mph, the National Hurricane Center announced at 1 p.m. EDT.

That strength is just 2 mph under the threshold for a Category 5 hurricane, the strongest grade of hurricane.

Life-threatening storm surge and catastrophic winds are hitting shore, the National Hurricane Center said in its 1 p.m. EDT update.

Michael is very likely to be the most powerful storm on record to hit the Florida Panhandle.

It could also end up being the strongest hurricane to hit the continental United States in a generation.
