  1. czarowniczy says:

When we built the Louisiana Vietnam Memorial that’s housed at the Dome we worked with the sculptor, Bill Ludwig.
All of his work was through the lost wax process, he’d get actual clothes from the Vietnam War, put them on a form, spray a stiffener on them then cut the figures into pieces. The pieces would be made into a wax form that would be encased in a plaster compound then fired in a kiln long enough to vaporize the wax, leaving the mold.
On a given night Bill would line up a group of the molds and call for a party. Our committee plus guests would show up and Bill would fire up his forge. It was an open forge slightly below the ground with a natural gas burner that sounded like a jet engine. He’d use a pouring device that clamped onto a crucible about the size of a 5-gallon bucket and he’d lower it on to the burner. He’d use large tongs to lower ingots of bronze, each about 15 pounds if I remember correctly, into the crucible and we’d all stand around, drink beer and gab until the pot was full of melted bronze.
When the molten bronze was the right temp he and his assistant, all clothed in heavy neck-to-shoe apron, heavy gloves, helmet and face mask, would shuffle from mold to mold pouring the glowing liquid metal into the molds.
If Bill really knew and trusted you he’d have you suit-up and pour with him, quite an honor as he was not only trusting you to safely and correctly carry over 60 pounds of molten (somewhere around 2000 degrees F) bronze but trusting you to pour. If you screwed up a mold could be ruined and that would set him back a week or more. More importantly if you slipped you’d spread explosive molten bronze all over the shop. There were also little splashes that at times would pop out of the mold as you poured – many of us have small burns from the pours, they…stung – but you had to stay steady.
After the pours Bill would have a party. He usually cooked somethin- he was a great cook – but at times he ordered. Best party I remembered was when Bill, another Connecticut transplant, made a huge table of real grinders. We all ate NE poboys and drank beer from the refrigerator he’d converted into a 2-keg cooler -taps in the door.
Bill died in 2011 but he has a number of lifesize bronze statues in NOLA and a lot of individual pieces throughout the world.

It sounds like the kegerator should have its own display somewhere. The stories about when things are made are so great. Even if its beer and samiches.

It was great. His shop was an old, dark, huge warehouse with about a foot of sand all over the floor. The beer machine was at one end with a large box of cups next to it and it was free beer from the time you entered to when you left or were carried out. He was a great host.

In note – ALL of the equipment on the figures, uniforms, helmets, TA-50, was genuine Vietnam items donated by vets for the statue. The items were all completely destroyed in the process but live on in the statue. The casting is so finely done that you can see the thread patterns in the web gear and even in the uniforms in some places.
The weapons are genuine, M-16s borrowed from NG, .45 1911 was private and I got a loan
on the M-079 right from the Army storage depot – they mailed it to me at the unit and after we made a wax mold and cleaned it off we returned it. The 40mm grenades were cast from two live 40mm HE, couldn’t find dummies or practice rounds. You can read the serial numbers on the weapons, or at least you could ~40 years ago.
Bill wouldn’t use the faces of real VN vets as he said we were too old (1982) and he would use the faces of kids 18 to 20, about the same age we were in Nam.

You held beer parties at each casting?

My old dentist, whom I met at one of the castings, was a party animal. He’d schedule me for some work as his last patient of the day and, as soon as the session was over, he’d break out the booze and we’d have a few drinks. One day he started a bit early and he was putting on a temporary cap before a crown. The cap fit perfectly, like a sock, and he glued it in place. We sat down, had a few more and just before I left he wanted to make sure the temp cap was OK so he starts poking around. Long story short – the cap doesn’t move – I mean it DOESN’T move. Don’t know what glue he used but some 25 years later it’s still there and ain’t going nowhere. I know there’s a moral there – might be a morel too if I didn’t floss regularly – but as he didn’t charge me I ain’t vabout to go digging around.

I learned how to cast about 12 years ago. used a centrifuge to cast the metal into the investment. We usually used semi-precious metal, but a lot of gold as well. I never burnt myself, (had a good teacher) but Ivey could be dangerous at times, lol.

I’ve also made a bit of jewelry over the years, same process.

No, all of the rats were outside. We just had to watch out for a few cockroaches between Terminex visits.
              All scraps were accidental.

The whole process was amazing, you can’t even see the joints where the pieces were assembled. What I remember most sharply are the pictures of people who were trapped at the Dome during Katrina just standing there looking at the statue.

Good morning y’all. Off to a Monday start. To increase the Monday factor, I have a dentist appointment. My theory is that you should make all crappy appointments and tasks fall on Monday. Get it out of the way, and hey, it’s Monday, the day isn’t goint to be a great one anyhow.

Boy did I find the cure for lounging in bed being lazy and having a hard time waking up. Someone I know on Facebook posted a picture of a Torah lesson he was working on. He posited that the teaching of the Incarnation of Jesus by the Holy Spirit would mean that God committed adultery with Mary because of the Jewish teaching on marraige and espousement.

Lit my fuse right up. And yes, I am now laughing at myself, even though the heartrate still hasn’t gone down.

    Joke of the day:

Hillary and The Donald go into a bakery, while on the campaign trail. As soon as they enter the bakery, Hillary steals three pastries and puts them in her pocket. She whispers to Donald, “See how clever I am?” The owner didn’t see anything and I don’t even need to lie.” Then she says “I will definitely win the election.”

The Donald says to Hillary, “That’s the typical dishonesty you have displayed throughout your entire life, theft, trickery and deceit. I am going to show you an honest way to get the same result.”

Donald goes to the owner of the bakery and says, “Give me a pastry and I will show you a magic trick.” Intrigued, the owner accepts and gives him a pastry. Trump swallows it and asks for another one. The owner gives him another one. Then Donald asks for a third pastry and eats that, too. The owner is starting to wonder where the magic trick is and asks, “What did you do with the pastries?” Trump replies, “Look in Hillary’s pocket.”

My DH said to tell you a joke. He really liked yours!
The Baptist preacher had all of his teeth taken out. The poor man tried the next Sunday to preach, and only lasted about 5 minutes. “I’m sorry”, he said.” I’m hurting so bad, I’ll see you next week.”

The next week, he tried again, and only made it for 10 minutes. “I’ll try again next week” he said.

The next week, he started preaching, and preaching…. everyone wondered, “Will he ever end this”? After a long time, he realized he’d been preaching a bit too long.

“I’m sorry”, he said, ” I put my wife’s dentures in this morning, and I just can’t shut up”!

    lilbirdee12โ€™s prayer:

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
