This song reminds me of two things: that iconic scene in Casablanca where the displaced defy their German overlords & my Grandpa singing this song in exuberance (in a Finnish accent)–he’d memorized a few national anthems of other lands & would sing them with great enthusiasm.

Reminds me of my high school french class. I can still sing this song from memory. It’s very bloody.

High school French class…once when one of the burnouts lit a cherry bomb & we all had to evacuate the school! Those were the days…
We never had to learn that song, but had to listen to “Le Petit Prince” on headphones. I can still hear the cheesy, tinny voice “dessine moi un mouton” (forgive my spelling fantasies)

There is a version on YouTube with both French and English. It’s not a perfect translation, but good enough.

Yes, bloody. But also, really really long: 13 verses! Noted that of the 7 usually omitted, they threw out the one beseeching God to assist them in their defense of the Fatherland….
