Stars & Stripes 87 and Celebrating the 1987 America’s Cup

Today’s Sousa march is “The Thunderer”. It is a well-known march, but I’ll bet you didn’t know the name! It was written in 1889, and is considered one of the first Sousa marches to have that quintessential American march sound. I have heard that is one of the easiest of his marches to perform, which is probably why we hear it performed so often.

    I was asked the other day when I plan to be able to stop making all the mistakes I have made lately at work. I was only told about two mistakes that I made last week so I was pretty blindsided by a question about no longer making mistakes no one told me that I was making.

    I was advised by a family member over the holiday that I needed to talk to HR or someone who is not my boss about this. I agree. I do wonder if HR will just see me as the newcoming troublemaker if I go to them. Though I don’t think I have a lot of choice at this point.

      I had a job where I was, shall we say, forced on the manager of this department. He didn’t want me there. When there was a change of mgmt, he told the new mgr that I was stupid, lazy, and couldn’t do the work. So, the new mgr said he would get rid of me quickly. I knew nothing of this until one of the supervisors came to me and told me. She said, she didn’t know what the problem was, but all the contact we had was very positive and she told the new mgr this. After that, he started paying attention to what I was doing and became my greatest supporter.

      I hope this works out for you. It can be a real struggle. Probably most of this have been through these kind of situations at one time or another. So, hang in there.

      That’s a good idea. Consider following up your meeting with a letter/memo of thanks for meeting with you and discussing your concerns (name them, if it seems logical).

        I was also told this morning that maybe I should speak to my boss first then go to HR. TBH I don’t want to, because I don’t know how to explain to them my problems when I’ve already been asked to stop making mistakes I have not heard about -_-

          Ask for a meeting with your boss and HR? You will have to use your instincts here. If it is your boss who asked about your mistakes, you should ask him to explain what they are.

      Something similar happened to me a while back, except I was given information after the fact–i.e., after being told that I was not being kept on. And the reasons given were “all” the “mistakes” I had been making–that NO ONE HAD ENOUGH DECENCY AND/OR /PROFESSIONALISM TO TELL ME ABOUT, EVER*. Totally infuriating.

      *Actually, I think it was a set-up. In hindsight, I realize that it was a toxic place to work. I am thankful I escaped, although I still fume at how I was treated.

      Keep cool, rheavolans. I ended up screaming at the boss.

      I have occasionally resorted to ad hominem remarks, but usually when the person is not fighting fair – either lying or purposely ignoring my logical points.

      The big one (and that I sort of regret) was in an argument with a cousin of mine on Facebook. She was (in a very holier-than-thou tone, I thought) deriding President Trump for his poor treatment of women, and especially his infidelities. After one nasty comment too many, I reminded her that she, herself, had had an affair with a married man and bore him a son – her first child. In fact (although I didn’t say this) two of her three children were conceived out of wedlock. What I said was absolutely true, and she was being a really big hypocrite about the sanctity of marriage. It was just impossible to resist at the time, and not really ad hominem, I guess, because it pertained to the discussion at hand. I’m sorry I said it, but NOT sorry that we are no longer speaking. She’s a snake. There, THAT would be ad hominem, I guess.

        You know, I sometimes behave worse on Facebook than if I got drunk and said nasty stuff. I overindulged yesterday, first time in many years, but fortunately I don’t tend to get mean and nasty when drinking.

        One of these days I may have to just get off Facebook which will mean I’ll miss a lot of grandkid stuff. And there’s a lot of humor too. But then there are people I haven’t seen since high school, thank God, who tell everyone what they had for dinner. Or vaguebook, which makes me want to slap people.

          I like intelligent conversations, and sharing family stuff with reasonable people. I found that blocking really nasty people helps, as does “unfollowing” (not unfriending) certain family members, and creating custom friends lists for shares and posts.

    As God’s qualities are beyond human knowing the Episcopal Church, at its 79th convention opening today, will vote on God’s gender. Nothing like resolving issues of divinity by asking for a hand-vote by the unknowing.

    Morning everyone 🙂

    Today’s painting is a magazine cover, and there is no attribution. It looks like a watercolor. I really like it, and thought it went well with today’s sailing photo that Stella posted.

    Have to run, have out of state relatives coming in this and next weekend, and trying to find new lights for kitchen (no functioning lights in kitchen now). I only use incadescent bulbs because of my eyes, so that cuts down the options as well. Really surprised at lack of choices, and have to find and get something here before the electrician shows up on top of everything else going on!

    Since I don’t have any pictures of a Trump rally to share with you, I thought I’d share a couple of renovation pictures instead…

    This picture is a partial view of the entryway that was taken in March. From the tin plates that we found when the north wall of this room were gutted, we could determine that this room and the vault were added onto after the original bank building had been built. This room probably served as the bank managers office.

      Real slab wood over stud finish – nice. I’ll bet there are real 2X4s under that wood too.
      When we had to demolish old NOLA houses that had become irreparable through extended drug house use we’d find things like real cypress 2X4s notched into cypress 6X6 sill and top plates. With cut nails, no less.

        The wood that was used to build this building is incredible czar. Twelve inch planks, yes, honest to goodness 2 x 4’s, pine, oak & maple so far in the mix of materials used. The smell of the old growth wood when cut is out of this world and so different than the smell of the young growth lumber that we find now.

        When we opened up the walls and I saw the shiplap, I knew that the planks were the direction I had to take with the interior walls. It feels right and although not ship-lap, the tongue and groove gives a good representation of what the interior would have looked like on the day that the bank first opened its doors.

          There’s a thriving ibdustry (actually predates Katrina) of enterprising entrepreneurs who’ll strip vacant ‘old’ NOLA houses for cypress structural pieces, tim ceilings, firelace tiles and bricks, architectural trim, aged longleaf pine flooring…anything, actually.

            I’m quite a fan of architectural salvagers. It is a nasty, dirty, dangerous job pulling that stuff from old buildings and properties, but god bless them for doing it.

              If you have lots of money, you can get flooring made from wood salvaged from barges sunken and submerged for many years. Beautiful, but very costly. I hated the floors in the cabin when we moved in, so I painted them to look like old salvaged wood. Since they were actually wood, no one ever realized it was a painted finish on them.

              Took me about two months to do it, as I was slow, it was very hard work, and it was also very detailed work. Since I wanted it to last, I also took my time putting several coats of poly on top of it. Then we had a fire not even a year later, and they were ruined. However, I did get the whole place remodeled, so it was a big win.

                Painting floors is a huge labor of love Menagerie…so sorry that you lost it in a fire, but very nice that you ended up with a remodel.

                I’ve seen some things made with some of that submerged wood and you’re right, it’s gorgeous stuff, but waaaay out of my budget. range.

              These aren’t salvagers, they’re thieves stripping places illegally and selling the stolen items to crooked stores – frequently damaging or ruining the thing they salvaged in the process. They’ve recently been stealing the carved/cast dfecorations from the old tombs in the NOLA cemeterties, badly damaging them in the process.

        Remodeling those homes can be tricky with millwork too, as jambs are custom and many contractors nowadays don’t understand that and can’t measure for it. Also sometimes standard trim (brickmold here in my part of the South) won’t work.

        If you ever restore an old home or building you really need good people who know their trades. Also, there is just a “looks right” aspect too. I’ve seen people restore old homes and put big money in architecturally hideous choices.

          “…architecturally hideous choices.” Like some of the newbies who’ve moved to NOLA hasve done.
          We have a few private services that recycle the ‘can’t find/make ’em no mo’ pieces from old houses. There are some modern-made repro pieces of19th century trim pieces but when you place them side-by-side with originals you can tell the difference.
          We do have some really good and technical restoration folks here, I can remember when Ann Rice bought the old St Elizabeth’s and restored it, it looked restored but the restoration was fantastic, all original down to the copper rain gutters. Now it’s condos (that happened after she sold it) but the money she put into it made it amazing.

      It’s looking great. I understand about liking the change. I’m ready to have a very different look from the cabin, even though I do love it so much. If I were rich I’d have a house, a beach house or condo, and a cabin in the mountains.
