General Discussion, Wednesday, April 25, 2018

Developed in the 1830s and 1840s by Samuel Morse (1791-1872) and other inventors, the telegraph revolutionized long-distance communication. It worked by transmitting electrical signals over a wire laid between stations. In addition to helping invent the telegraph, Samuel Morse developed a code (bearing his name) that assigned a set of dots and dashes to each letter of the English alphabet and allowed for the simple transmission of complex messages across telegraph lines.

Czar was 12B and 96B…never commo. I tinkered with ham radio back in the early 60s but Morse was Greek to me…You could have gotten the message back mo’ quickerer by pigeon that my keying it. Operators used to recognize me by my ‘fist’, they called me ‘ham’.
I used the PRC-6, -8,-10 (I still have one), -25 and got comfy with the -77 before I was issued a desk. Note that every one had a mike, I was ordered not to get within 50 feet of a key.

why I never got beyond Novice ham license…could do 5 wpm morse, but 13 wpm for full ham license, plus the vacuum tube schematic diagrams were too complex for me as a 14 year old…but build my own transmitter, strung my own antenna, and bought a Hallicrafter receiver from odd job earnings…..became a devil at soldering stuff….

You’re welcome, Wooly! Love seeing the greats perform.

While rummaging around on the Internet and at YouTube I found some terrific MeatLoaf articles and vids, too. I was surprised to find he’s still with us. Another thing that surprised me was his saying that he finds it immensely difficult to be around people in a social setting and usually stays home when he’s not performing. Obviously we can never know the traumas of others unless they mention them, but that was so startling it made me cry.

        • When I was a kid, we got these ads in the junk mail for Columbia Record Club deals, which were a scam, but they got us a bunch of free records. I got my folks to let us get Kenny Rogers’ The Gambler and a few other albums. (Then we got pestered and harassed by them for the next decade or so.) I remember, to this day, looking at the album cover for Meat Loaf’s Bat out of Hell, and thinking, “WOAH! That must be some heavy, dark, heavy, angry hard-core stuff!”

Us kids were only allowed to listen to Nice music. Christian or Hippie. Petra, Amy Grant or Lovin’ Spoonful. Not much else.

But that album cover is the biggest lie I ever saw as a kid, when I finally heard it as a late teen. I bet the art on that cover sold more albums than the music did.

Those two — the music itself, and the album art — go together like peanut butter and anchovies.

I’ve now started packing. I’m not too sure how I feel about traveling for four days living out of a camper with 4 other adults and 2 toddlers. lol

It’s a 8 hour drive tomorrow without stops. Then racing Friday night and a 2 hour drive whenever it ends. Then racing Saturday night, then a 5 hour drive Sunday and then a late night 4 hour drive Sunday night home.

My kids better be grateful that I love them. 🙂

Traveling is not my cup of tea. lol

When they first started talking about traveling to race, I kept telling them 3 hours a way was my limit. Then they talked me into going to Waco.
Then they started talking about buying a travel trailer so I’d go with them more often. I told them it wouldn’t be happening and we had too many animals to be gone that long, because with pigs you just can’t leave like that.
We sold the pigs and it’s a little easier to leave the dogs, goats and chickens. Not many folks want to mess with huge pigs. lol

The real reason though is if my son-in-law got into a wreck, I don’t want to be 8 hours away and my daughter have to deal with that and 2 kids by herself.
I might be regretting it though, my daughter was warning us tonight Gracie usually 2 or 3 nights a week wakes up screaming and with it being a strange place she probably will be really bad.

I know he’s probably right, he’s more safe on the track than driving to the track, he doesn’t have a 5 point seat belt harness, hahns device, helmet, fire retardant shoes, socks, suit and gloves or an automatic fire extinguisher in his truck. lol It doesn’t stop me from worrying though.

Plus, we’re not getting any younger and we’re never promised tomorrow and the grandbabies won’t be babies forever and my little man told me, “Nanny Iz so happy you and PaPa goin’ on a racin’ vacation, Iz would miss you so much and be really sad.”

He’s in hog heaven because even his uncle is going on his racin’ vacation.

Such a special relationship, even though I don’t have any grandchildren I think part of what makes it so special is that we realize how fast their childhood slips away.

Last night I saw a woman commenting on a Governor candidate discussion that she was voting for a certain candidate. She stated she had been a life long democrat but switched to Republican for this election.
Later someone commented that only one candidate was being endorsed by Right to Life groups and she commented, “Leave Roe V Wade alone.”

I then asked her why she was voting Republican if she was for abortion, it is not part of the GOP platform. She said because this candidate said it was the law of the land, so he wouldn’t be trying to overturn Roe V Wade.

Heck, if even Democrats can see Republicans are not serious about ending abortions, why do so many Republican voters bury their head in the sand?

I am sick of getting played by Republicans who claim to be pro-life, but really are fine with abortions being legal. For 45 years we have heard we just need to get the right justices appointed to overturn Roe V Wade, well that hasn’t worked out too well.
I am sick of getting played by Republicans who claim to be small government and then spend like they’re a kid in a candy store. Why even have a GOP platform if the GOP is going to continue supporting candidates that follow none of it?

Just received an email update on the Gosnell movie:

Gosnell Movie Sneak Peek screenings in Ireland next week

    Dear Supporters,

We wanted to let you know we are going to do two sneak peek screenings of the Gosnell Movie in Ireland next week.

Ireland will hold a referendum at the end of May to lift the legal protection on the unborn from the constitution.

All the major political parties in Ireland agree that lifting the ban on abortion is a good thing
The “conservative” Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, a medical doctor has evolved from pro-life to “safe, legal and rare, we see here in the US how well that has worked out.
    All the major newspapers agree
Amnesty International says not having abortion in Ireland is a human rights abuse ( we are old enough to remember when Amnesty International protected prisoners of conscience)
The United Nations says Ireland is absolutely wrong and appalling to protect unborn babies

The Gosnell story tells the truth about abortion. In Ireland there has been scant discussion of what an abortion actually is. The Gosnell jury had to be educated about abortion, about the difference between murder of a baby and legal abortion. The prosecution called two abortion doctors and a neonatologist to give evidence so that the distinction would be clear.

Here is a reminder of just some of that testimony. We think this is useful information for Ireland to have, hope you think so too.

    thank you,

    Ann
