    I can’t help wonder if Merkle’s politics aren’t partially motivated by the self-loathing fostered in so many DDR residents by the Russian overlords? Merkle was an active Communist though she now claims she was only ‘passing’ so that she could get ftrom da man what da po’ and downtroddin’ was de-nied by the racism inherent in the DDR structure. She also said that if anything else shows up actually showing she was a dyed-in-the-wool, active Communist she can live with that too.
    Allies went to years worth of trouble de-Nazifying Germant after the war while West Germany just wholesale welcomed all DDR residents in without out even a cursory political delousing and let the contaminated jump right into German politics. Now we’ve replaced the corriosive Nazis with no less corrosive one-off Communists. What is it with the German soul….or maybe they just don’t have one?

    As a Canadian I couldn’t agree more, except that he is not a ‘he’, nor a ‘she’ but rather a whatsit who doesn’t know which bathroom to use.
