    • My DH’s house that he grew up in was a lot like this. In the kitchen, under a seat against the wall, was a tin bathtub. He said it was filled once, and then everyone took a turn in the bath.
In our wee house in Scotland, we had a walk-in pantry. it had a small window with a marble shelf and an air grate for the cold wind to come in. that was where you kept butter and milk. The cold air coming in kept it all from spoiling. I loved that old house!

Reminds me of the irony of our support to England just after Dunkirk.
The 300,0000ish troops were saved but had to leave their weapons on the shore as they evacuated. There were not enough weapons in England to arm the military and the Home Guard, and the firearms act of 1937 had further eroded civilian gun ownership in England so the civilian population didn’t have weapons to appropriate.
Now in the US, where due to the Brits attempts at disarming the citizens pre-Revolution caused the 2nd Amendment, the citizens had private arms. The US ‘American Committee for the Defense of British Homes’ and the NRA put out a call for Americans to donate private firearms – shotguns, rifles and pistols – to the Brits to arm the Home Guard as an imminent German invasion was feared.
The US responded and the Brits got US-civilian donated weapons to arm the Guard while the home industry and the US rearmed the military. US donors did not get the weapons back.

I still have a small compass on a watch chain given to me by my paternal grandmother in the late 40s that has a carving of Mt. Fuji on the back. It was probably from the 30s and that gift comes to mind every time I see a photo of the mountain.

Anytime I say our department of education and individual school districts need forensic audits, the pro-school folks say, “schools are audited every year by the department of education.” 🙂
Kind of like the fox guarding the chicken coop, especially when the state school superintendent is using government property to encourage teachers to keep going. For those matters, so are the principals and superintendents and have been doing it politically. It’s illegal but nobody seems to be willing to take on the education lobby and enforce the law.

Well this shows why we need audits.

Remind ’em that each year the NOLA school folks were audited. It wasn’t until an unconnected audit disclosed hanky-panky (whoda thought?) that long-time members of the board were relocated to Federal prisons – Fed funds are involved in just about all public schools.

Yep, Oklahoma is skating on losing their federal funds, time is ticking on completing tests. They’re begging for an extension, I’m praying it’s denied. Teachers at the capitol though don’t care, they keep saying it doesn’t matter if they lose the funds the state still has provide them.
For starters that is not true and is not in the law. Even if it was true where the heck do they think the money is going to come from? They are now getting 53% of our state budget after our pansy legislature hid under their desks because of stupid teachers yelling, “What do we want? More Money!”

My daughter commented to a husband of one a little while ago and made me spit my drink all over my computer screen. He keeps trolling one of the many groups now started on FB against the strike. He posted a picture of his wife supposedly taken earlier in the year when a family member was in the hospital, grading a small stack of papers, with the comment, “oh no I guess my wife does have to work outside of school, here’s an hour she’s not getting paid for.” He had already said his wife was a 2nd grade teacher with 20 kids in her class. My daughter commented, “if your wife can’t grade 2nd grade papers in 5 minutes, she’s an imbecile. An hour to grade 20 papers that look to be addition that isn’t common core math, maybe that’s why she’s so confused.”

I’m driven back to the 70s when, in the military, we had to take junior servicemen’s wives down to apply for food stamps and welfare. We had classes on how families could use the bulk soy-based meat extender to spread out the hamburger that was about the only red meat they could afford. We also diddled the mess requisitions so that we had extra food in the mess to help unit families out. This was while our guys were getting deployed to places they couldn’t talk about undder operations that didn’t exist.
We had to wait for RR to get us raises that actually paid us salaries we could live with. Sergeants bought supplies for training, officers and senior NCOs chipped in to buy ammunition to shoot/qualify with. We didn’t stop working and march on DC, we did what we were paid for and were expected to do, and if we weren’t happy we didn’t reenlist, we got out and found another job.

My BIL is retired LE. He’s as mad as a wet hen like many of us. He keeps confronting them everywhere he sees them giving them an education on how bad they could have it. Along with how not one time in the thirty years he was an officer did he ever walk off the job, not when he went 10 years without a raise, not when he drove cars that were pieced together. He knew when he got into it the pay sucked, the hours were long and he was going to be shot at. He keeps telling them they all should be fired and sued for breech of contract.

Speaking of money crimes. While doing my research I came across a name from the past. He was a HS basketball coach at one time until he was caught embezzling money. He was so low he was stealing concession stand money and had been doing it for 10 years before he was caught. That wasn’t all he was embezzling either, he was taking money meant for new uniforms and instead of ordering them like he was supposed to do, he was having a friend make them for a 1/4 of the cost. I can’t remember now all the other money sources he had stolen. Instead of filing charges against as they should have done the school told him he could resign and pay back $5000 of the tens of thousands of dollars he had stolen over the years. He went on to being a principal and then a superintendent of an Indian school and again was caught embezzling money. They did prosecute, but he ended up getting a suspended sentence and had to pay back the money. I found his name at a little country school listed as Superintendent.
So yeah, don’t tell me they aren’t crooks and only hire respectable people.

    Hi Everyone 🙂 Waves Hi!

Our last painting in the sunrise/Easter series is Sunrise Atlantic City by William Trost Richards.
This is such a calm painting, I actually took the time to redo one large and one small streak of discoloration running vertically through the scene.

And to end the series, this is perhaps my favorite vintage Easter card

If anyone knows how to, using MS Paint, “clean” overall dirt off an entire oil painting’s image other than enlarging to 700% and going over each brushstroke, I would greatly appreciate it. There are many beautiful paintings I do not post because they were scanned before any cleaning was done.

My apologies for not responding to the beautiful, informative, and entertaining posts. There are so many, and I greatly appreciate them, but Spring is a difficult time of year for me. The florals have just been lovely!
    Have a great day everyone ! 🙂

Syrian opposition activists and rescuers said Sunday that a poison gas attack on the rebel-held town of Douma near the capital of Damascus killed at least 40 people. The alleged attack has been denied by the Syrian and Russian governments. Russia is Syria’s closest ally and has a major military presence in the country.

Russia has had a major military presence in Syria for decades and I’d call Ruusia less of an ally than I would owner of Assad.
These attacks were Russian orchestrated, if not carried out, and follow the same routine they (Putin) used to pacify Chechnya. I do believe I said, next door, years ago that despite Obama’s assurance the chem weapons in Syria were gone that the Russians were removing those chem weapons that could be traced back to their front steps, others (especially in the form of precursor chemicals) were around.
What would be elightening wouyld be access to theintercepted air traffic between the pilots dropping the weapons and Syrian ground control. Just as the intercepts revealed the Russians and the North Vietnamese were using chemical weapons agaqinst the Hmong the Syrian intercepts would go a long way to proving Russian inolvement in the attracks, especially if sheepdipped Russian pilots are involved.
