Most of you are familiar with our friend, Sharon, who comments here regularly. You have probably read her posts (lovingly referred to as MBOB) at Conservative Treehouse on Sunday mornings in past years.
You may even know that Sharon wrote a book (see cover above), and thought to yourself that it might be something you would like to read, but never got around to purchasing a copy.

If you aren’t familiar with Sharon’s writings, here is my review of the book, written at Amazon at the time it was published:
If I had the talent, I would write a book just like this one – to pass on the experience of what is was like when I was growing up, what my parents and grandparents, neighbors, and friends were like, and how it felt and looked and smelled, too.
Sharon Torgerson has that talent. You will be enchanted by the stories about a child growing up on a farm in rural Montana; what it was like to haul water from the only well in their area to the cisterns on the farm, searching for a lost cow, playing a march on the piano at 5:00 am (just because!), what those printed flour sacks were really used for, traveling the country by car with her family on summer vacation.
There is the poignancy of the letters written by her father to her mother (his Rosebud) prior to their marriage in 1926, and the story of the Danish immigrants who came to Montana at the turn of the 20th century to farm, form communities, build churches, and become Americans.
Foremost, you will understand, a bit, what it is like to be a child and young woman growing up in the rural West, her place in the continuum of family and community. As we understand our past, we can better understand the present, and the future.
You won’t regret buying this book. Although it is her first published work, it is a gem!

I was thinking of writing a review that began, ‘While Sharon’s current life mirrors a Mickey Spillane novel…. ‘ , but then I saw that Spar Harmon left a review, and after reading it, I felt very childish.

If you are a really old timer Treeper, you used to read Mailboxes and Old Barns every Sunday. If you missed those excellent stories, and you haven’t yet discoverred Sharon’s writing, here’s your chance. It’s only 3.99 on Kindle.
It has one of my must have requirements to be added to my favorites list. If an author can make me see the characters, feel the action, view the scenery, in other words, put me in the story, it’s a rare treat. Sharon has that gift. Along with the ability to allow the experiences as related to be the lessons we sometimes need, without attaching a sermon.

I am so jazzed! just bought my copy from Walmart. Looked VERY hard for hardbound but Amazon is owned by Jeff Bezos, who trashes our President in the WashingtonPost, which Bezos also owns, so had to settle for paperback from Walmart. It will arrive in 4 days and I am soooo excited! I grew up on my grandparent’s ranch at the foot of Mt. Shasta in California, so I know Sharon will take me back to those days in rural America…..were we just naive then, or were those days really like heaven on earth?

I like the hard copies, too~there is some visual advantage to what can be included on the dust cover. Then you can share your paperback with a friend or family member! 🙂

Menagerie, thank you so much or posting this. I’m leaving on a trip in the morning so it will make good reading on Kindle. The little I read above I know I’ll be reminiscing and crying about my own memories. Although I was born and raised in the south, I think this is reflective of all sections of the country. Thank you again.

Thank you for the recommendation! My criteria for a must buy/read matches yours. I was blessed to grow up up in a much simpler time, where hard work was rewarded with hard play. My siblings and I played whiffleball, kickball, baseball, kick the can and yes, ding dong ditch, after doing the dishes, cutting the grass (or shoveling the “global warming”), weeding the garden, or any of the other chores my hard-working parents were too tired to complete after a hard day’s work. My husband and I instilled these values in our own children, and all are successful due to their work ethic. I look forward to reading Sharon’s book, and will purchase extra copies for my children and friends.
