    Johnny Cash had an every-man type of voice with a special twist which made it appealing. So difficult to determine what sets certain people apart…but his singing this hymn is a great example of a special talent.

    In the 80’s there was a nun who was music director at the parish and school my kids attended. In the Catholic Church the Passion of Christ is read every Palm Sunday, with participation of the faithful, being the voice of the crowd. In other words, the entire congregation were the ones who said “Crucify Him” over and over. The nun ended the service singing this song a capella every year.

    I don’t believe even an angel could sound as beautiful. Every year, even after we changed parishes, I went to Palm Sunday mass there, until she left.

    Many hymns, songs, and chants are beautiful. Few achieve the necessary level of emotion to crack our hearts open. This is one of them.

      Last night, at Holy Thursday Mass, when we finally sang the Gloria again, my heart cracked open and tears poured down my face. I hadn’t realized how much I have missed it these past 6 weeks.
