    My family enjoyed watching some hoops this weekend. We started at a Special Olympics district basketball tournament for my special needs son. Later that day we watched Michigan beat Michigan State! Sunday the Michigan Wolverines stood atop the Big Ten after defeating Purdue!

    We have lots of family history at U of M. My dad was in the first graduating class from U of M Dearborn in Engineering. My husband’s (robber baron) ancestor J(ames) J(ohn) Hagerman graduated from U of M Ann Arbor in the Civil War era. Two of my 4 kids have attended U of M Dearborn, but have yet to graduate…Go Blue!!!

        Being concerned over the many stray cats roaming the huge complex I lived in several years ago, bowls of water and cry cat food were always left out for them on my patio. One morning I thought someone was breaking into my apartment. My cat’s tail was puffed out and his eyes were big. We slid gingerly up the hall and then peeked into the living room. Nothing was amiss and so over to the glass patio door we went to check on the noise.

        What should there be but two very large raccoons holding up their little hands to me as though begging. Kitty’s tail got even bigger. The pair stared at me, stood full up, their hands on the screen. What to do? I went back to bed.

        Next morning I discovered what had caused all the noise was the raccoons turning over a hibachi, moving the parts around, and upending a bed I also kept out there in case a kitty needed a place to sleep.

        They came back a couple of times during the following week to eat the much larger amount of food I left for them and the cats. Then they disappeared…and, of course, I worried about them finding food for a long time after. LOL!

    This Day in History: Bennie Adkins, the Battle of A Shau, and his Medal of Honor

    During this week in 1966, a Green Beret engages in a multi-day battle in Vietnam. The Army estimates that Bennie Adkins took out anywhere from 135 to 175 enemy forces during the course of the conflict.

    It had to have been like something out of a Rambo movie? You never would have known that Adkins himself had sustained multiple injuries. He just kept going! And he refused to leave until every other soldier had been evacuated.

    Adkins might have been drafted into the Army, but he volunteered to serve in the Special Forces. “I wanted to be the best that I could possibly be,” he explained.

    He would more than live up to that statement during the Battle of A Shau, a conflict that began when the Vietnamese attacked an American camp on March 9, 1966.

    If you get a few minutes you might consider contacting your Federal rep and Senators to tell them to support the Taylor Force Act. It’s an upcoming bill that will try to prevent aid money sent from US taxpayers to the Palestinian Authority that will be used to pay stipends to the families of Palestinian terrorists who are killed or imprisoned in the process of killing/trying to kill Israelis.
    The bill is named the Taylor Force Act as a Taylor Force, West Point Grad who was getting his graduate degree was visiting Israel, was attacked and stabbed to death by a Palestinian terrorist. That terrorist was later killed by Israeli police but the terrorist’s family will receive a couple of thousand of US taxpayers’ dollars every month for life, courtesy of the PA’s rewarding terrorists who murder Israelis and get killed in the process. Taylor Force was not an Israeli but they get the money anyway.
    It’s bad enough we’re pouring US taxpayers’ monies into the Palestinian Authority but their using them to reward Moslem murderers in overboard, the Taylorv Force Act needs to be passed.

    Howdy, friends! The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race got off to a great start yesterday, on a beautiful afternoon in Willow, Alaska. There were 67 teams of 16 dogs leaving the start line–that’s over a thousand dogs. Our girl, Aliy Zirkle, was bib number 31, so pretty much in the middle. It was a timed start with one team leaving every 2 minutes. The 2+ hour difference between first and last to leave will be made up at the mandatory 24-hour rest stop somewhere in the middle of the race.

    This morning Aliy is in 3rd position as the field heads up the Alaska Mountain Range toward Rainy Pass. Her team is moving well and looks very energetic in the video clips that you can watch online if you pay a membership fee to be an Iditarod Insider (which of course I do–a whopping $33). She likes to stay near the front in the early part of the race, but not necessarily IN the front. Just always well positioned to make a move and take advantage of small mistakes or bad luck on the part of other mushers. In heavy snow years, which this is, being in the very front means your dogs are doing extra work to break trail, and you don’t want to waste their energy like that. Snowmachines go out in front of the mushers, but several hours ahead. The trail they lay down can fill in quickly with a steady snowfall.

    The pundits at the start yesterday were pretty consistently saying they expect this year’s winner to be either Aliy or Mitch Seavey (last year’s winner). They are currently neck-and-neck in the 2nd and 3rd position at this very early stage of the race. GO ALIY!!

        Mitch is the dad, and a really nice guy. Dallas is the son, and an arrogant jerk. Between the two of them, they’ve won the last six Iditarods; two for Mitch, four for Dallas. I really don’t want a Seavey to win again this year!! But it won’t be Dallas regardless, as he is not running this race. His dogs turned up positive drug tests at the end of the race last year. Someone gave them tramadol, a pain killer. He absolutely denied doing it, and there was no way to prove who did it. He correctly pointed out that there is very lax security around the dogs at the end of the race. He was not banned by Iditarod Trail Committee, but it was such a big stinky scandal in the dog mushing world that he voluntarily withdrew for 2018.

        GO ALIY!!

          Ah! I noticed a headline or two about a scandal, meant to get back to it and then forgot about it. That is a hmmmmmmm…. Will security be more stringent this year? And even if Dallas didn’t give his dogs pain killers he still had an unfair advantage.

          Thanks Tundra! I saw a headline or two about a scandal and meant to read about it but then forgot. I thought it may have been about the drunk or crazy guy who charged at Aliy. So someone gave Dallas’ dogs painkillers which gave his team an unfair advantage. It doesn’t seem that there are many people who would have the interest and find themselves in the circumstance to do such a thing. SMH.

        That’s the truth, joshua. And add to that, when dogs are stressed–as they often are in the excitement of the race start–they can have diarrhea. The start chute will have 2 guys with long-handled shovels and 5 gallon buckets to clean up any messes.

        These dogs are consuming 10,000 calories a day to perform at the level required for Iditarod. Even with high quality feed, that means a lot of waste. When they pull into a checkpoint, the musher puts down straw for them to sleep on and cooks up a pot of warm meat soup to feed them. They sleep 3-4 hours, and then it’s back on the trail. The dogs know the routine, and they all poop on the way out of the checkpoint. Lighten the load for the next run, ya know? So the trail out of the checkpoint is NOT a place you want to fall!

    So good to hear Tundra narrating the Iditarod again this year. Third year for following this, and never seems to get old. Thank you.

    Apologies for disturbing a quiet afternoon here, but would like a few opinions, if y’all do not mind. No other place to obtain something rational, tbh.

    Rep Tim Ryan has an idea to move big ag subsidies to local farmers, and just sent off an email supporting this. Ryan is hawking his book – of course – but his idea is a good one, imo. Ryan is stressing health and gubmint medical cost benefits, but this would also revitalize local trucking, and could involve retirees mentoring kids and the new truck owner-operators.

    The only downside seen so far is regs from D.C., so encouraged Ryan to require local/state regs only.

    They are going to spend our money, no matter what. Big ag will lobby hard against it. But, this sure seems like something useful, for once. imo

    Tim Ryan is a progressive Dem, so common sense says this cannot be good. There must be a catch. Please talk me out of this. Thx.

      Downside I see is like most gummint programs to us out here in the sticks – by the time the tsunami of money gets here there’s hardly enough to settle the dust.
      The year I retired my USDA had a program to bring hi-speed internet to the rural areas. $1-billion went out and, coincidentally, our county was largely ‘wired’ with buried fiber optics. nearly ten years later here comes the same program but outta the FCC and more fiber optic cable’s being buried. As of five minutes ago NO ONE’s been hooked up out here.
      I could go on about other rural USDA programs and how they dangle them in front of you only to let you know you have a better chance of being swept up in the Rapture than getting a dime out of them; and oh yeah, you will lose much of your control of much of the property the money covers for an undetermined time.

        Heck they never even got far enough to bury the fiber out here. Class action lawsuit now against the internet company and our local REC because instead of actually getting internet to those with no internet except satellite or maybe one broadband company they went into areas that already had several internet providers to choose from including cable internet. Then they spent millions of dollars fighting for easements in an upper income retirement/vacation lake community. They lost that battle in the courts even after taking it as far as they could.
        Now thanks to that mismanagement another company that wants to spend their own money to run fiber optic into our area is being prevented from doing so by the same REC and internet provider fighting them on easements and the right they were given to by the government to provide us with fiber optic. They also didn’t provide service to the number of residents that were required of them to receive the grant money they received.
        A different company that applied for the grant money has petitioned the government to have that money paid back and given to them to provide the service.

        Thanks to the government handout we’ll probably never get reliable internet service because of all the red tape and court cases. The worst part is we would have already had it if it wasn’t for the government handout because the company spending their own money had to halt construction when the government stepped in to help us rural folks. Just don’t help us anymore would be my vote.
        I feel the same about farming subsidies all they do is usually end up hurting the majority of us while they pick winners and losers. Again just don’t help us.

        Thank you, all. The destiny of a crazy person is to seek out rational thoughts from among the more sane.
        The idea of growing local and taking away the subsidies from multi-national agri-business is enticing. But, sadly for gubmint, not feasible.

        Btw, we laid our fiber circa 1994. Was working for T/W at the time. They never even considered fiber out in our area (very very rural), altho T/W did give employees free Dish Network. Never even considered asking for gubmint subsidies then, but no doubt would demand it now.

          Problem is that out on a farm you need hi-speed as much as any other business does. You talk to the USDA folks and thy tell you to download this pub, or that vodeo, or theother forms and thety can’t graspit when you tell them your area has zip for hi-speed. We can get satellite but reception sucks – a rainstorm, a thick cloud, a trail of buzzard flatulence and it’s game over.
          I just tell myself it’s no worse than we had in the city in the late 90s.

            Exactly and besides the farm we run our other business out of the home/shop and nobody wants to do fax anymore, everyone is e-mail or website.

            When our REC first sent out the feelers for the fiber and said you must sign up to be guaranteed it would come to your area, we signed up, were the first to do so according to the lady at the office. Then later we were sent a notice that now we had to pay a $100 installation fee and must me paid in order to guarantee you would be on the list to first get it, that’s the order drops would happen. Again, we were the first to do that. Then REC sent a notice we must contact the provider to make sure we had been transferred to their list as now they would be handling everything. We did that and then about a year later they sent a notice we would have to pay another $100 or we would not get a drop. So now they had $200 of our money, another 2 or 3 years passed, we really lost count. The engineer came out and did his stuff and said it was usually within about 3 months after he was sent out, just continue following the construction updates. Around another year and they post all the areas that construction had been put on indefinite hold due to lack of funds.

            I called them up and told them I wanted our money back and at first they gave me the run around and then transferred me to another that said that deposit shows interest if they return the money then it would show no interest and if enough in my area did it then they would think nobody wanted it. I told them they had did nothing but lie from the beginning and they have had our money for years and that I wanted our money back. It took months, but they finally returned it. We were contacted and asked if we wanted our names added to the class action lawsuit, it wasn’t going to cost us anything so I told them to add it. I got something the other day that a judge had given them all the records and they had found in the records that only 10 drops were individuals who had paid the pre-installation fees and out of those only 2 had paid the two separate fees. Not surprising to me since I know where they ran it. They also have discovered out of all the possible drops only 38% are now customers. Again not surprising they already had fast internet and it’s cheaper than what they’re offering. There was over $200,000 they had to return in pre-installation fees, so that pretty much says the true rural people were their demand and who they coud have been getting revenue from. I suspect they will soon be filing for bankruptcy.

              Yeah, gummint said that the primary internet provider would be HughsNet so we signed up. Got free installation, fre equipment and a $59ish a month fee for metered download of questionable quality. Every time you call their customer service you get the Asian call center where everyone’s on their Book 2 of Eglish as a Second Language.
              Now we have a Verizon hotspot that has slightly more metered download at a higher price but only the 4G is metered, it drops to 3G if we dare go over our allowance but the service is far better – no weather outages.
              Fiber optic’s going in in even more areas and hi-speed cable’s made it to within about 4 miles of us but we ain’t holding out hope.

                I had to break down and go back with the only broadband we have, the one I swore I wouldn’t use again. It was either that or satellite and I’ve done that before and didn’t want that headache again.

                Ours allows 250 gb a month and then you have to pay if you go over. We are too afraid to have Netflix anymore because I think if they know you have it they lie about usage to just get more money out of you.

                I guess it’s a price we pay for living in the boonies, but for years we had unlimited internet and they only sold out because they thought fiber was moving in and going to put them out of business.

                  Give you an idea of how pissant petty the comm companies are – AT&T took all of the dial-up modem phone numbers in out area and moved them outside of the local calling zone so land hard-line data had to go ‘long distance’ and our land line contracts do not allow data transmission thru our unlimited long distance. It’s not as if we were rushjing to use 1985 technology, it was the spirit of the thing.

                    Anyone who knows me knows I much prefer a landline. I had no choice though but to get rid of my home phone. For years I had unlimited long distance, started off paying $45 a month for it, then they kept not having this plan anymore, because this one is better. Better for them as the price kept getting higher. When it got up to $100 a month I told them to turn it off. You’d think AT&T wouldn’t screw the few people who want a landline.

                    AT&T a few years back tried ton get the FCC to let them flat out drop their landlines, they wanted to go totally fiberoptic/wireless as the profits are greater – less maintenance overhead. Luckily the Feds said ‘no’ as there’s still a huge part of the industry reliant on copper wire. That would have left us especially screwed as at that time we had no cell service. AT&T jused to swear we had service based on our zip code and you just couldn’t convince their ‘customer service’ folk that the zip was a post office that covered some 300ish square miles.

                    We’re screwed where we live, only Verizon and AT&T works, but if we head south then Verizon doesn’t work so we’re stuck with AT&T cell phone.

                    Exactly the opposite here, Verizon has a tower 1mile away and I had to go 1/4 mile north to get one bar on my AT&T. Have to say though, AT&T did offer me the option to buy a $500 amplifier that would make my cell phone work.

      It sounds too good for the gov to do it without the money ending up in their pockets. 🙄
      I have to laugh, and always do, when they say that people can’t eat well because it is too expensive, when what most people I see are eating fast food, processed food, etc. which is very expensive.

        My brother was griping to me this evening about going to the grocery store and the person in front of him had t-bone steaks and lobster among other things and it was being paid for with a food stamp card. He said he knows for a fact that’s what it was because they went over what they had on the card and argued with the cashier what amount in food stamps they get.
        He said how mad he was because he has to live within a budget and was buying HB meat for his dinner and doesn’t think it’s right folks too poor to buy food eats t-bones and lobster on his dime.

        I told him at least it was something they had to actually cook. 🙂

          was behind a woman of color and her lil daughter gal at the check out groc counter, when clerk said she could not buy the dogfood on her welfare card, so she sent the lil darlin girl back to get 5 pounds of ground hamburger instead for the dog…….

Its slogan, “Vaffanculo!” none too subtly invites establishmentarians to attempt monogenesis. It took votes primarily from the Left. Moreover, Sunday’s vote changed Italian politics generationally from below. Nothing like this had happened in a century.
