President Trump should sign an Executive Order allowing for school staff to be armed and for armed volunteers to patrol the halls of schools.
Many of the lives taken yesterday could have been saved if the staff was armed and/or trained volunteers were roaming the halls.
These poor kids were fish in a barrel.
I would volunteer one day a week to protect children at any of our local schools.
Not talks about “sensible gun control”. Not punishments for law abiding citizens. Not grief counselors for everyone. Not people sacrificing their lives for others and leaving behind grieving spouses, parents, siblings, and children.
There is no way to stop every nutter, terrorist, or any other bad intentioned people from killing innocent people but we sure can make it a lot harder for them to do it in schools.
Prevention.
Every school should do this.

I heard the Superintendent say in an interview yesterday that they have police on campus. My question is – why don’t they keep the doors locked (egress allowed), and have a security guard who allows people in at his discretion. Our office building had doors locked, and authorized persons had key fobs that could unlock the doors. Each fob was identifiable as to who it was issued to, when entry occurred, and we could restrict entry to particular doors at particular times. Why can’t schools have security systems?

The schools here all have locked doors and you have to be buzzed in.
The Cruz shooting took place in the Freshman building which is a separate structure from the rest of the school. I wonder what kind of police they have on campus and if the Freshman building has an officer in it at all times.

One article I read said that the coach who was shot also served as Security. I’ll be he wasn’t armed.

Could be. I do remember hearing that on the tube. One of the teachers unlocked his door to allow fleeing kids in, he was shot to death while relocating the door.
RIP Scott Beigel
Beige was a geography teacher at the school who unlocked his classroom to allow panicked students to take shelter inside during the shooting. He was struck and killed by a bullet while closing the door behind them.
Kelsey Friend, one of the students whose lives he saved, told CNN “When he opened the door, he had to relock it so that we could stay safe, but he didn’t get the chance.
Directly addressing Beigel’s family, Friend said “Thank you for bringing and having this amazing person in life and giving him the power to be stronger than I could have ever been.”

he was a monitor and an assistant coach. he is more a strong arm guy to help teachers with problems in the class rooms requiring so additional discipline muscle when they kids won’t follow teacher instructions and cause disturbance. these are not really “security” but are there to try to De-esculate issues emotional and physical issues with kids, and if need be, they can call the uniformed Resource officer, who is a gun carrying, handcuff carrying, law enforcer….but THEY are trained to absolutely bring problems DOWN, not to get the kids further agitated….and they are very good at this job…unlike a normal police officer or military person.

The article said “security”. I didn’t know you were so familiar with this particular school.

there are constantly people entering and exiting public schools…delivery people, postal people, vending machine people, office supply people, district executives, parents, PTO members, many who do not speak English and need a person to check ID credentials….there are backpack searches for all students in morning and magnetic detectors units, School District police, called “resource officers” who are armed and in uniform….and all schools have entry for school bus students separated totally from the parent vehicle pickup area, and the access to student parking lots. Teachers I spoke with in a major urban school do not want to carry weapons under any circumstances. There are drills and plans in place to shut down the campus immediately and do lock down of students in classes, with processes to secure the entry and ability to see in the classroom, and defense methods in case a doorway is breached…all teachers are training in what to do and have practiced already.
This Monday morning quarterbacking is insane, and suggests that schools are stupid and totally unprepared for troubles….but anyone intent on creating a problem can find a way to do so if they try hard enough and know the layout of a large building.

No it is not stupid. And all schools are not the same in their security measures.
All schools have entry for school bus students separated totally from the parent vehicle pickup area, and the access to student parking lots.
This simply isn’t true. None of our schools have the school bus children’s entry separated from children walking to school or children being dropped off by their parent. All of the children use the same entrance and exit.
There are backpack searches for all students in morning and magnetic detectors units.
Again none of our schools search backpacks nor do they have metal detectors at the doors.
There are drills and plans in place to shut down the campus immediately and do lock down of students in classes, with processes to secure the entry and ability to see in the classroom, and defense methods in case a doorway is breached…all teachers are training in what to do and have practiced already.
And yet we have 17 children shot to death and over 20 with various injuries sustained by Cruz having time to go about the school shooting people at his leisure.
I do believe the school administrators are acting stupidly when it comes to the defense of our children. There is nothing wrong with having armed security at schools. If there was 1 or 2 armed guards in Florida there would very likely be less dead people. Cruz tossed his gun aside as soon as he realized that armed people were there to respond to his massacre.
There is no way that children should be fish in a barrel and that is exactly what they are now. Being locked in a room makes the barrel smaller. Thankfully from reports so far it sounds like Cruz didn’t actually entered any classrooms. If he did the casualty count would be much higher.
but anyone intent on creating a problem can find a way to do so if they try hard enough and know the layout of a large building.
Of course they can, that doesn’t mean we should not be diligent and keep the most vulnerable of our community as safe from evil people as we possibly can.
The folks I know, one a retired school superintendent and at least a dozen teachers would conceal carry in a heartbeat if it wasn’t a felony.

Maybe that’s true in the schools you teach in. Not true in many.

schools are filled with security systems, cameras, security viewing of all areas, inside and out, video recorders, adult hall monitors with walkie talkie communication able to call for help or notify the administration and the school univormed and armed Resource Officer group on campus, and ability to move officers from other campuses to a school under any manner of problem, fights, out of control student body riots, or outside threats. Parents have resisted totally all manner of personal electronic badges that would tell where any student actually is located all day when on campus….and the parents did not want that “control”….blame parents for a lot of the failures in managing the school institutional operations.

That is not true for all schools. Many schools have no security viewing inside or out or adult hall monitors. Neither do they all have Resource Officers. I can’t blame parents for not wanting their children tracked and even if they were tracked that is not going to keep them from being shot.
I blame parents for many things, but blaming them for not wanting their kids tracked is ridiculous. Exactly what good would that do anyway outside of locating their dead bodies?
There is not a perfect answer that will stop all school shootings, but locking all doors and having armed staff would certainly prevent many.

I agree with you completely Michelle, of what use is tracking US citizens who happen to be children?
There is a reason I homeschooled my children through the eighth grade. I wish I could have continued it through high school.
The State can keep its hands off my children.

I doubt that school had that level of security.

Independent School Districts are not under the control of the Federal Govt, but are under local and state mandates. Trump has no authority to issue any manner of directive. The Dept of Education can control some grants and funds, but the state is the actual controlling body of governance.
