O sea, you thunder and roar
And I love the sound of your fury.
When you throw back the refuse in your midst,
What treasure I find!

The children of the beach are warmed
By the fires they make with your contributions.
I saw their symbol of peace and love
Scratched in the sand before their sheltered rock,
Where they had set up their house.

I made my symbol of a star close by their circle
And breathed a prayer for these dear ones;
“Lord, may they find in Thee
The peace they seek.”

        A wonderfully versatile vegetable, there are so many ways to cook them it’s almost impossible to get bored eating them. We’re on a Yukon Gold streak right now, they have a better taste than the regular white ones and yukon cook them sooooo many ways (it’s early).
        Crawfish season soon, boiled mudbugs with corn, sausage and lil’ red potatoes all infused with onion, garlic and crab boil. You can take the leftover potatoes and make hash or potato salad with them, even chop up any leftover sausage and add it in.

                After using them for so long, I don’t like any others in mashed potatoes, and I agree about the potato salad too. Love potato salad, it’s one of my favorite foods. Very popular down here, but IMO usually not made well. I’ve had much better potato salad up north.

                I’m not totally sure what the difference is, but I think part of it is that Southern cooks boil the potatoes to mush, and they put too much stuff in it, burying the potato in a pile of goop. I like crisp tart potato salad where. Can actually taste the potato and onion.

            I’ve been back to making one of my favorite breads made with potato water, so we have had potatoes several times lately, which is unusual for us. I do not doubt their health benefits, but I cannot eat them and lose weight.

              You can (I have), but you have to watch portion size and serve them as plain as possible – no fried, sour cream, tons of butter etc. I would rather give up bread.

                You know, they have all these diets now. Paleo has lots of meat, keto lots of healthy fats (oversimplified). I wish there was a bread and potato and chocolate diet. That I’d be great at.

                  I desperately need to lose weight, so I’m not one to lecture anybody. When I did lose a lot of weight, I followed the Zone program, which isn’t as extreme as Paleo, but it’s effective. Balances lean protein, fats, and carbs. Does limit bread, potatoes, pasta, while encouraging consumption of good carbs, like (most) fruit and veg. Controls portions.

                    Sounds a lot like the South Beach diet which My husband and I went on some years ago. There were three levels, the first most severe, with no fruit and specific vegetables. I went on that level, but my husband went on level 2, because he eats fruit and drinks juices that help him out in the heat.

                    He lost 30 pound in a month and a half, I lost 8 pounds in 6 months. I was pretty disappointed. I do best on Paleo.

                    Zone is older than South Beach. I lost 60 pounds in 11 or so months. Calorically, it was about 1,100 a day, but I was never hungry. For an example, I would have cottage cheese and fruit for breakfast, tuna salad, tomatoes, cucumbers and fruit for lunch. Then, for a snack, I would have a glass of white wine and some goat cheese (an ounce). For dinner, chicken breast or fish, vegetable, small baked potato. Yogurt as an evening snack.

                    Zone was developed originally for heart health (it smooths insulin levels in the blood). I remember my daughter’s MIL telling me that you can’t live on a diet without grains. Well, you can, and she’s the one with diabetes. The diet they give diabetes patients is a joke.

                    Was that at https://www.zonediet.com ?
                    Did you sign up or just buy a book and follow it?
                    Did you buy the polyphenol supplements? I already take a good fish oil.
                    I was interested because it said anti-inflammation. I am the inflammation and allergy queen. The 2 biggest problems I have with eating is finding enough foods I can rotate, so I do not become sensitized to them, and having to eat carbos. A prior doctor had me try one of those high protein – no carbo diets, and I literally stopped functioning. I was almost not even conscious. I see this diet has veggie carbos, so that’s good.
                    I don’t even know how much fat I have to lose because I am lugging around so much lymphatic fluid, but I am guessing I need to lose probably 30-40 pounds of fat.

    Wet….drizzly anticipating blobs pf ‘yellow and orange’ on the weather radar. Dog let me sleep until almost 7 -must be a holiday in his world. Got to stand outside with both terriorists in light rain – individually so as not to end up bathing them after the inevitable mud romp – so coffee’s perking and I’m drying.

    Stella, did you come across the star shaped sand on Hoshizuna no Hama Beach, during your beach search? It is fascinating and beautiful.

    Thinking about grains of sand as stars in the sky is a common way of trying to visualize the enormity of the universe. But at a few beaches in Japan’s Okinawa prefecture, the sand grains really are stars.

        and with advanced age…I have learned through research about hip replacements, arthritis pain treatment, trigger finger surgery, miracles of eye care, discovery of insurance plan secrets, foods that are not to be eaten anymore, gratitude of fellow citizens who are from another culture and country, the manner in which a drug store, grocery store, or big box retail store can overnight totally re arrange where stuff is so they can accommodate liquor aisles and room for electric “fat carts” to drive about by the American citizens who ignored health class in public schooling, how to easter egg hunt parking places in the WalMart lot, where to find bar codes on heavy boxes of goods, and how to make the heat come on when it refuses to do so as it was designed.

        yes, but all of that, I have learned requires a smile on the face and a degree of patience and understanding that was never part of youth or younger days.

And then that was blown away when he suddenly started speaking in a pretend Virginia accent in an ad called “Best I Can.” My client said, ‘Forget it. There’s already a YouTube of him speaking in his real voice and his pretend one.”

    Should it matter to me if a fireman drops an f-bomb while he’s pulling me from a burning building? Would I really care about what came out of his mouth in those moments? Heck no! I’d CARE about what he was DOING. He wasn’t sent there to save my soul and I’m not looking to him for spiritual guidance. All I’m thinking in those moments is, “Thank you, Jesus, for sending the fireman.”
    I’ll post this article below again for those who still might not understand me.

    This man is crass. Okay. He’s not careful with what he says. Okay. You feel offended that he’s not a typical statesman. Okay. But he is rebuilding the nation my son died for…the nation I feared was on a fast track to becoming a hopeless cause. Forgive me if I’m smiling.”

    Local news is all happy about the latest spending bill that FORGAVE $330-million in ‘loans’ to three traditionally black NOLA universities.
    Two of them are rather good though they had no/inadequate insurance to cover flood/hurricane damages (?). The third, Southern University at New Orleans, has been a perennial basket case, even having been named ‘the worst college in the US’, The State and Feds even hid the SUNO student loan default rate for years, if you tried to find out what it was you got an endless runaround. When SUNO’s graduation rate exploded to 8% from 5% it was taken as almost a validation of the U’s post-Katrina rebirth. I also remember how, in the 90s, the State seriously considered PAYING good students to go to SUNO to get the graduation rate up. Guess that if you could get decent grades on the SAT why would you waste years in s university that was frequently on the cusp of losing its accreditation and actually did lose it at one point?
    Anyway, wanna thank y’all taxpayers for mo’ free Gummint Katrina money.

      Why does it not surprise me that SUNO is listed there?

      I had to keep a lot of my opinions to myself while I traveled in N’awlins, because being both a Conservative and a Yankee, it would’n’a done me any favors down there. But we visited SUNO on the trip and other then the woman who gave us the tour of the place, I didn’t see another white person outside our group. I thought, “If the skin colors were reversed here, every liberal in the nation would crying hysterically over how discriminatory and bigoted this place is.” As it was, I’d never heard of the place until we went there.

Other than the fact that the college is nearly losing it’s accreditation and the fact that I would have been in the minority, is that offer still valid? Where do I go to sign up?

        if SUNO had cooking classes, it would not be boiling greens or making skillets of cornbread…it would be about Microwave usage and 7-11 food buying on a budget when you can’t just steal stuff every time you are hongry….

        It has, on and off, lost its accreditation.
        Back in the 80s/90s our Fed agency used to recruit ‘management’ from SUNO – and they wondered why we had problems – and mysteriously we lost a multi-billion dollar program , they screwed up my retirement (a job we did for much of the government) and it cost them over $25K to make me whole, one of our senior managers was arrested by the FBI for kiddie porn on his work computer after he’d been warned multiple times by management to stop downloading it on work time, and multiple other issues. At one time the agency even considered relocating to and building a new home at the ‘SUNO Hi-Tech Park’ – an empty lot across the street.
        Louisiana has a state university system primarily designed for black students and a seperate higher education board to manage it. Sounds racist but the black community fully supports it and wants to keep the two boards separate. At one time there was a move to combine the SUNO facility with the mostly white University of New Orleans just down the street. That would have saved $$$ by combining duplicate programs, facilities and give SUNO students access to a wider and, in some cases better, range of instructors. It would have raised both admission and performance standards for students and the board rejected the idea. When the legislature tried to save money by combining the regular and black boards into one the black educational community soundly rejected it. So there we are.

          It doesn’t just sound racist it is racist. I hate to make the allegation because that word means practically nothing these days, but I’m again imagining the full on hysteria that would ensue if there was a whites-only education board. For some reason I’m supposed to feel bad over whites-only drinking fountains, but down in New Orleans there’s “separate but equal” education boards…promoted by blacks.

          Guess that “equality” thing was a great big lie, huh? And based on what you’re saying, I’m also picking up the soft bigotry of low expectations down for certain minorities down there too.

            The education boards are at the state level, the board at the local level’s a whole nuther animal.
            If you had separate black/white drinking fountains that would be racist. If you had ‘white only’ fountains that would be racist. If you had black only fountains that would be a progressive social program designed to provide guaranteed access to a public service to a group historically deprived of such. Pointing this out is racist too.

    Nunes is on Martina Bartiromo and he is being very blunt. More importantly he is calm. This is not the same breathless Nunes who hightailed it over to the White House. He is explaining the 3 branches of government. He stated that the legislative branch will be making criminal referrals and expects the DOJ andFBI to prosecute people in the Steele circle. If the FBI and DOJ does not act lawfully it will be the American people who will have to seek remedy.

      Good morning Michelle, a friend had her baby in December, she was waddling like a duck for the last couple months of her pregnancy, overtime I saw her I was happy it wasn’t me.

        My daughter has been assisting with sitting with animals while giving birth and pulling animals most of her life.
        She would always laugh at me for telling the animals I knew it hurt and that I felt for them.
        After her now experiencing pregnancy and giving birth she has a little more sympathy for them. lol

        Although I will say it’s too bad labor and delivery isn’t as quick with us humans as it is with animals. 🙂

          I was sick 9 months out of 9 had 2 emergency C sections (the first one after 36 hours of labor and my daughters hear rate dropping to 72) I am happy to observe pregnancy second hand although I did enjoy the wonder of life growing inside of me. Oh, dod I mention my second daughter separated my stomach muscles.

            I had 3 natural births, but had one who laid on my bladder for 9 months and had 9 months of morning, noon and night sickness. Another one I think I had my ribs permanently damaged as he kept something in ribs for 9 months. The last one it was my spine.

            Outside of those issues I liked being pregnant and really liked having little babies to care for.

          how is it that cows always seem to have trouble with birthing only in the far pasture and at 3 AM when it is damn cold outside and black as pitch and where the 4 wheel drive can hardly navigate the rocks and ground holes? and how come the afterbirth won’t come loose until you are exhausted from pulling? the mysteries of animal husbandry….

    The idea that everything is possible, we just need to want it enough, is I think basic to the left, from progressive to hard left. I would think that an adequate refutation would be to point to pretty much the entire corpus of human history.

    But this does not stop the left because yes, it didn’t work out all those other times, and sometimes it didn’t work out in horrifying ways, but this time we’ve got it. Besides, we’re righteous people and smarter than everyone else and we know how to do it.

    Then the bodies pile up.

      I had this conversation recently with a liberal.

      I asked if it was possible to reduce traffic deaths and tragedies by a huge number, if it was possible to reduce them to almost zero, but, there would be some inconveniences incurred would he be willing to bear those inconveniences, why, yes of course was the haughty self righteous reply. I said then we should make car bodies out of steel and reduce the speed limit to 10 miles an hour on every street and his dream would come true.

      He said I was being ridiculous, I said people were dying because of his refusal to be inconvenienced. He got mad.

    Love Is… the name of a comic strip created by New Zealand cartoonist Kim Casali (née Grove) in the 1960s. The cartoons originated from a series of love notes that Grove drew for her future husband, Roberto Casali. She would hide these little drawings where he would least expect, tucked in a pocket or popped under his pillow, and send them to him whenever they were apart.

    They were published in booklets in the late 1960s before appearing in strip form in a newspaper in 1970. They were syndicated soon after and the strip is now syndicated worldwide. Roberto Casali was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1975 and Kim stopped working on the cartoon to spend more time with him.

    Casali commissioned cartoonist Bill Asprey to take over the writing and drawing of the daily cartoons for her under her pen name. Asprey has produced the cartoon continuously since 1975. Upon her death in 1997, Casali’s son Stefano took over Minikim, the company which handles the intellectual rights.

      We have a couple of resident redtails. If they’re home and you’re walking down the 100-feet+ of driveway with tree cover on both sides they’ll squawk at you to let you know they’re unhappy. Every now and the you can catch them dining al fresco by the roadside, they may give you the stink-eye but they won’t generally leave the table.

        Our pyrenees will kill them and all hawks that get too close. I’ve tried telling him it’s illegal to kill them, but he just smirks at me. 🙂

        I remember the first time I saw him leap into the air after one that was swooping down after a chicken, it was pretty darn amazing to watch him catch it.

        We find lots of dead things he kills. I just know someday he’s going to kill something with a tracking device on it and I’m going to have the government show up.

          18-wheelers get most of them around here. They haunt the interstate where the big rigs will disturb rodents along the large grassy sides and median strip. Ones that swoop in too close to the passing trucks get sucked in and plastered…ones that survive get the good meals.

            We had a bald eagle circling the pasture one day and as I watched the dog watch it and bark at it, all I could think of the darn thing was going to swoop down and he was going to kill it. I’d have to explain all the bald eagle feathers. My husband told me it was okay we were Indian and could be in possession. I told him I think we could have one not the entire bird. lol

                  Bury ’em deeeeeep. Those microchips are usually not transmitters, they have to be accessed by a ‘reader’ and you can remove them when you clean the carrier before cooking….back in a minute, there’s a knock on my door.

                    These they were talking about were something new they’d come up with due to the old transmitters coming off. So they’re not like the ones they put in for dogs to scan.

                    It kind of creeped me out actually, ’cause you know they just claim they’re developing all this stuff for wild animals, but eventually they’re going to want to track us. lol

                    I have a friend who thinks when they give you flu shots and pneumonia shots that they’re already inserting microchips into you to use at a later date. I think I’ll tell her about these new ones. lol

                    She asked me once if I get the flu shot and I jokingly told her no that the government is probably using us for guinea pigs. That started her on thinking they were putting chips in us. I told her I was kidding, I honestly don’t get the flu shot because the sickest my husband ever was, was after getting a flu shot, not because I truly believe the government is experimenting on us.

                    She’s not really eccentric about anything but the government. 🙂
