She loved nature, especially the sea, and my daughter once wrote, “When I was a teenager, I remember Grandma used to say “You never listen to me!” But Gram, you were wrong. I listened, and I watched and learned; and I believe that there’s a little magic piece of you inside me.
I know it’s that little piece that makes me stop on my walk to the train in the morning to watch the rest of the sunrise, or pull over to the side of the road to pick up a fall leaf or smell the lilacs in the spring. Grandma used to cut fruit apart to show me the beautiful patterns inside. She watered the plants and told me to listen to them drink. She brushed the dirt off the vegetables in the garden and bit into them, telling me to taste their goodness. She sees beauty and magic everywhere. I believe she sees God all the time, in all the good and lovely things of the earth.”

Looks like from my explorations of some in English youtube vids this is challah bread, and apparently all these different braids are quite common. I knew it was a braided bread, but I hadn’t ever seen all these varieties. Yep, going to try it out.

Menagerie, I have used this recipe on several occasions – even baking it in loaf form rather than rolls. It’s rich like a brioche/challah but without a lot of fuss.

I saw that too. It translates several different ways. First time I ran it, I got back recipes in French that were challah type recipes. After that I got bread n the hall, or something like that, and then bread for pasta.
I won’t make a sweet bread, I’m thinking I’ll look for the challah most to my liking.

Yes it does. I’m going to surf recipes, pick one, make a very small amount adjusting the sweetener to a minuscule amount and see how it turns out.
I like cinnamon rolls, pecan buns, and such treats for after breakfast coffee, but when it comes to breads with meals, be it yeast breads, cornbread, or biscuits, I do not like any hint of a sweet taste, so I frequently play with recipes.
Sometimes I have troubles. Certain flours like wheat I have to have a little more sugar or molasses to keep the bread tasting right.
Id like to maybe make some of those as gifts for my family for Easter, so I will play with it some.

I was reading at King Arthur that you can eliminate the honey and substitute water, but that the crust and texture won’t be the same. They suggest doing what you are – reduce but don’t eliminate completely.

Make it sugar-free: Substitute 6 tablespoons water for the honey called for in the recipe; be aware the dough will rise more quickly. The finished bread will taste quite bland, not at all like classic challah; its crust will be hard and blistered, and it won’t brown as nicely. Using at least 2 tablespoons honey (instead of eliminating it entirely) will help the bread taste and look more like classic challah.

My challa never had a sweet taste, but yes it has eggs & is braided. Only a small amount of sugar to feed the yeast. Very tasty when it comes out of the oven, just pull it apart & put it in your mouth! Also good as French bread when it gets a bit stale. It is the traditional sabbath bread for Friday night supper in Jewish households.

I’m a pretty handy woman when it comes to doing remodel work, but I have to admit, I have never operated a caulking gun in my life…
I have been diligently removing old caulking on showers, tubs, kitchen counters, etc, but I have been deliberately avoiding the recaulk that needs to happen….until yesterday…
Holy moly…..there is laughter to be found in failure and I was a laughing fool during this project…..but I’m happy to say the counter is done & it looks great and I am once again reminded how invaluable are the self-help videos that can be found on line.

Good for you, Litenmaus. I’m like you. This year with the help of self help videos, I replaced the dryer heating element, and the drain motor on the washing machine. Tore the stove apart and checked the components for conductivity which would have shown what needed to be replaced. (Alas – the part I needed is no longer made and the entire stove had to be replaced.)
Having said all that, I would rather chop down a tree and split it into kindling with my forehead than caulk anything.

I have a hanging in my room – have had it for probably twenty years:

I have prayed while cutting down 55 foot oak trees, used all sorts of power tools, designed, general contracted, did some framing, did finish work, made furniture, and painted a prior house etc, etc, but I just can NOT caulk!

I replaced my gas oven igniter a couple of weeks ago. Not difficult, just uncomfortable on the floor! Also used self help video.

Wow – you’re brave! I would not do anything with gas – in fact here in NH you can entirely build your own house without any licenses (unlike Mass.), all except gas. You have to have a licensed gas company person do everything related to gas – and they DO inspect it carefully. You can be your own electrician, your own plumber, no builder needs to be licensed – but they are real picky about gas!

Replacing the igniter doesn’t involve touching the gas supply, but you can turn it off before starting. The igniter is electric, and I unplugged the stove before starting. The hardest part is installing it without breaking it, as it is very fragile.

Fooling around with natural gas isn’t advised. A couple of years ago our gas company, Consumers Energy, blew up a house and killed a homeowner while replacing gas supply lines. This happened about five miles from me.

Igniter went out in the wok burner on our Viking and the tech would have to come some 45 miles so I just use my BBQ grill lighter to fire it.

The gas valve is interlocked with the igniter, so if the igniter doesn’t heat, the gas doesn’t flow. The oven doesn’t work when the electricity is out either.
I can turn on the gas to the burners and light those manually, but not the oven.

My middle son has learned well from his dad to do his online research & now “enjoys” working on his own (& even his friends’) older cars. It’s fun being married to (& raising) a Jack of All Trades. Lots of times I do the online research & my husband does the hands on stuff. We both end up using logic to troubleshoot the problems that inevitably arise. It’s great to save money by doing it yourself & nothing competes with that pride of accomplishment! We’re glad that at least one of our kids gets it too…

My brothers learned to fix cars from my father, and my mother always referred to how good it was to have a resident mechanic. Of course, my father could fix anything, having been born when stuff could be repaired. My mother had a cartoon in the kitchen of a woman holding a very antique machine, telling her husband, “I don’t want you to fix it! I want a new toaster!”

My dad could fix anything. They had a toaster from the early 50’s that he just kept fixing and it still was working when they died some years ago. Also, when I was cleaning the last few things out of the attic, there was a drill from goodness knows when that he had fixed so many times he finally gave up on it, I guess. It was super glued together and duck taped. LOL It had one of those old cloth electric cords on it that he had taped back together.

My husband’s father taught his half-brothers so much about repairing things & hard work (my husband was too young when his parents divorced to get it then). Later his mom remarried & his step dad taught him many things about hard work in/on the house, car, yard, & various types of equipment. These seem to be skills that are being lost on the younger generation(s)–tragically.
A few months back my husband & our (then) teenage daughter worked together to repair our fritzing TV. It was a huge boost to her self-esteem to share in that successful adventure (& a “fun” task to do with her dad!)…

Not much to update on the bank….I talked on the phone with the previous owner yesterday and because of the snow storms we’ve had, he hasn’t been able to start moving his stuff out yet.
Which is fine…..my target date to finish this house is March and until I finish this, I’m in no particular hurry to start with the bank.
I’m glad that I enjoy painting because I seem to have set myself up for a whole lot of it. :0)

Good question, and like Menagerie said below, course sits up a bit, so not normally.
There is a pretty good natural break with rocks a cliff, lower here than the rest of the course. Same with the 18th fairway.
Think I may remember 1 instance of waves coming up that high in the past 40 years. This day it was actually a bit stormy, rain and high/rough surf, but is still a ways down.

Anyone ever hear of a gravity hill? Yesterday I stumbled across a video of a guy in a car in Oakwood Cemetary in Farmington, Michigan. It looks like the car is tolling backwards uphill.
After a little research, it turns out there is a logical reason for this. It also appears that water runs uphill in these places.

When was about 10 or 11, we were driving from Montana to SoCal to visit family. There was a place in the mountains, on two lane highway at the time, where that occurred. My brother I were glued to the backseat window as my dad pointed out to us that the water in the stream by the road was “running up hill” and yes, it was, to all appearances. Really strange and dis-orienting. Especially if we kept staring and trying to figure it out.
A similar visual/sensation thing occurs if you are stopped at a stoplight/intersection, and suddenly, it feels like your car is rolling – if your vision is focused a certain way at the same time the car next to you moves slightly. I

OK, so yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the Blizzard of ’78. Howie Carr did a funny takeoff of how weather forecasters overdo everything as a “snow apocalypse” now-a-days. I guess if you’re not from one of the states affected you probably don’t remember, but the 1938 hurricane, hurricane Carol, and the blizzard of 78 are considered the 3 biggies.
This morning I was looking out at the snow. It was very fine, and at this time of year whenever I see fine snow like this in February I think of “the storm”. Just some memories: My dad left on Sunday because he was part of the state emergency management team, he did not come home for over a week. My sister did not stay up and shovel her doors so by Monday morning we had to walk over and shovel her out. The snow completely covered her 2 doors. My niece was 6 months old, and could only have soy formula, and sis ran out. Thank goodness our brother had a snowplow on his truck. We called drugstores and found one where the people stayed, and they had the formula. He went to get it, and the cops almost arrested him for being on the roads, but then they let him go. It took around 5 days for the front end loaders to get to our street to remove the snow. The Burlington Mall was one of the 1st big covered malls in the area, and the snowplows plowed themselves into the parking lot, plowed the lot, then plowed their way out, and got arrested! All commercial snowplows were supposed to be working for the state, but Dukakis was horrible about not paying them after they plowed,so they refused. A friend was stuck at work, and could not get out. They had to break into the cafeteria refrigerators to get something to eat. They were stuck there for days without a shower, sleeping on the floor. DH was at the Beanpot hockey game, stayed, and then had to walk home through snow and high winds. BTW in the 1938 storm in my mom’s grammar school the nuns had the little kids walk home during the storm rather than sheltering them in the school. A college friend’s mother was pregnant, and went into labor. A firetruck managed to get there, but had difficulty getting back. She delivered the baby ON TOP of the firetruck!

Reminds me of the blizzard of 1967 in Chicago. The day before it was in the 60’s, and we got 26 inches of snow in 11 hours. Drifting was awful, and they didn’t get all of the freeway lanes cleared for a couple of weeks.

In 1993 we had two feet of snow in March. It crippled the South. We were, of course, absolutely unprepared. It was over a week of misery. No power, lots without water, and the interstates, 24 and 75, were closed. Lots of stranded people.
The company I worked for was closed for a week.
I never want to go through something like that again. BTW, if I remember correctly, I’m pretty sure temps were in the fifties during the day, and dropped to 20 or so in a matter of hours.

We weren’t down as long as that and (fortunately) we had electricity. All the stores closed, all the roads, airport and railroads were stopped. The storm was on a Thursday, but we were able to get out on Monday. The big problem was where to put all of that snow! In the city, they dumped it in the river or the lake.

When my sister lived in Manitoba in the 1970s they were snowed in for two weeks. Not fun with four children, a couple of dogs and a cat inside. Very luckily they had plenty of venison, fish and vegetables in the freezer and didn’t lose their power. The pipes held, too.
After about 10 days, they opened their mud room door and saw a bit of daylight at the top. Her husband removed enough snow so he could crawl through the enlarged opening and then began the digging out. Their nearest neighbor was ten miles away; so there was no assistance and he had to clear everything himself, with some help from my sister and their 10-year-old.
Ah, the joys of living where it gets 40 below.

We spent Christmas in Chicago, sometime between ’77&’85 & it was bitterly cold. Coming in on I-94 from Michigan it was coated with ice with cars & trucks in the ditches & jack-knifed as we neared Lake Michigan. I believe the thermometer was at -60F with the windchill at -100. Ironically my aunt & uncle’s home was a passively heated solar home (“Prairie Sun” in Naperville) & we were all quite warm inside. They made my dog sleep in the garage but used a small wooden stove for her so she didn’t freeze to death…That was a pretty intense trip & obviously memorable…We’d traveled in a station wagon with a 16-20 foot tree strapped on top for their two-storey living room…

Part of the ‘snowflake phenomenon’. Everything that happens to them has to be special and of unequaled importance. It was never as cold/hot/drought/wet…everything is new and unmatched in recorded history. Now we even name ‘rain events’ for them.

So I just received my 3rd Humidifier (from 3 different companies, but all probably made in the same factory in china) They all have a sort of chemical bleach smell that gives me an awful migraine. Does anyone know how to get the smell out in a reasonable amount of time? I wipe them with vinegar, I wipe them with alcohol, I run them for days – nothing so far has worked. Thanks.

Are you using tap water or distilled? You arebt adding oil or anything into the water either?I only ever use distilled because of hard water and I dont trust tap filtration. I have a crane cool mist humidifier and its still going after 4 years.

I should have explained better – my bad. All 3 humidifiers are brand NEW and UN-used. They smell that way from the factory upon opening the plastic bag they are packed in. They smell even before I add water. One is a Sunpenton, one is a Crane I think, and the other is a big name brand like Honeywell.
When I run them I only use filtered or distilled water – NO additives.

Have you tried running some water thru them while they’re outside? Might just be some volatile chemicals in the plastic leeching out (see Nancy Pelosi speech post) and an airing/run or two outside might clear it out.
If that don’t work try to get a refund from the store where you bought it. If they balk I’d call the company and explain it to them, casually mentioning your next call will be to the Consumer Products Safety Commission.

Hi Czar. Yes I’m guessing volatile chemicals is exactly what it is. I looked around and could not find Pelosi speech post you referred to – Sorry. I had been running the humidifiers for a few days in a less used room. They would freeze outside 🙂 I wish I could run them outside! Maybe after a month the smell would be gone. I notice this particular smell in many plastic household items such as this that are made in china. It used to be in air purifiers (of which I returned many) and then the manufacturers got the hint having a chemical smell in an air purifier won’t work, but I guess other people have been OK with it in humidifiers. I can return this one as well. It’s just that I really need a humidifier that does not stink. My last resort is to buy a gallon of Zero Odor Pro (expensive) and run that through. Thanks for your advice – much appreciated 🙂

Yeah, Chinese use a lot of strange plastic compounds, I’ve run across a few in various things that outgas really strange aromatic compounds. I usually find the smells in the softer compounds like hoses, kiddie pools, soft buckets and pails.
Yup, freezing…as much as read about it being cold in strange, foreign places I just forget that people actually live in those places.

Yes the softer plastics out gas more quickly. I really wonder if this is just another way of the chinese poisoning us like they did with dog food, vitamins, etc, etc.
Those volatile compounds are a big reason why I live in the cold north! When everything is frozen, there are fewer VOC’s, and fewer allergens 🙂 I’m looking out the window after another ice storm, and it is magically beautiful out there in this strange, foreign place! There are some compensations.

These numbskulls keep purposely forgetting that fascists are left-wingers who believe that government gives rights to the people and completely regulates business. Communism doesn’t permit the people to have any rights and owns the means of production.
Just because fascists hated communists during WWII doesn’t mean that made them right-wing. Hitler imprisoned or killed communists because they were competition to his sole dictatorship. Stalin did the same to political groups who opposed him.

I went with my friend to see Jumanji today. Now remember this is from a person who doesn’t particularly care for CGI or action movies in general. IT WAS GREAT!! I laughed all the way through it. I am not a huge Dwayne Johnson fan. I mean I always thought he was ok, but didn’t care too much for the movies he was in. I loved him in this. The way he switched from big tough guy hero to scared nerd and back was amazing. Also, I think Jack Black is funny on occasion, but don’t usually go to movies he is in. He was so good in this. And, something funny, we went to the ladies room after the movie and there were about 6 other women in there. They had all been in the movie and some had seen it multiple times, one at least 5. LOL
