Wake up its friday!
So I basically gave away my bed yesterday and some bedding I dont use anymore because I was supposed to get my new bed delivered today. Aaannd, no bed. They wont deliver until maybe monday. Very upset with costco. Thank goodness I bought a gel foam topper already so I have something. I told my kiddo it was inside camping. He likes being able to just fall onto “the bed” and run in big circles. He thinks we should skip a new bed altogether!

me too….but I learned about the “thaw” following serious freezing….not common in Texas.
Spent all day yesterday ripping out broken water valves that took hits and split opened…thank goodness I understand copper plumbing and Mapp soldering joints….clearly I just need a smaller house….then I got a call that the lakehouse also had a broken pipe which I had to get fixed long distance.
This global warming is getting to be a Royal PITA….

Yikes. I’m sorry to hear that.

I understand about your lake house, but don’t you have heat in your dwelling? That’s how we keep our pipes from freezing up here in the north.

was outside water valve at shut off…far enough below ground level and next to building with hot water heater….keep heat power on low level during all winter months and outside sink cabinets opened up when we are not there….this just took out the shut off valve to the house. also, all heat and power is electric, no propane or gas, so when a power outage hits…common with all the huge pine trees everywhere which do not like a lot of weight from ice on their limbs…so if power goes down, might take a long time for the electric coop to get service crews on the job…fortunately, our neighbors live there permanently and keep a watch out and call me if there is an issue.

I have a friend who owned a cabin in North Georgia that was a vacation cabin. While he was gone, a pipe burst in the kitchen and flooded the whole cabin up several feet. He didn’t know until he got the water bill for about $10,000, I think it was. When he finally got up there to look at it, it was a total loss because everything in it had molded. The only thing to be done was raze the whole cabin.

My friend couldn’t get him to do anything for months and it was hot at the time. He had a stroke somewhere along the way and was never really all there after that. By the time he got insurance out to see it, they wouldn’t cover it. He died a year or so later. Just a sad story.

Very sad. I started the “water off” thing (I shut it off where it comes into the house) when a co-worker had his dining room flooded and had to replace the hardwood floor. Just a faulty shut-off valve in the bathroom! He had insurance, fortunately.

“Are the Vanderbilt Heirs Being Forced Out of the Breakers?”
Gladys and Paul Szápáry will no longer occupy a third-floor apartment of the Gilded Age mansion built by their great-grandfather Cornelius Vanderbilt II. Some say the move is payback for their opposition of a welcome center on the grounds.

Wonder what they’re going to do when that tax base says, “y’know what? We could make $x,000,000 more per year just by leaving California. We wouldn’t have to do a single thing differently. We just need a new zip code.” Who’s money will they use to fund their SJW programs when they run out of Other people’s money?

Your comment, and Gil’s above, made me think of an encounter I had a few months ago. I volunteered with my parish to host a small group in my home for a program they were trying to get off the ground. Only one lady came because the few who were interested out here in the boonies couldn’t agree on a time.
Anyhow, she was of Hispanic heritage, but born here, her parents came legally. She told me about living for awhile in a small town in central California that was mostly migrants. Her husband is not Hispanic, and her life has been a blend of two cultures, but nothing like how they lived in the little town. She hated every minute of it. She said she had nothing in common with them.
This woman lives out in the country, raises small animals, does stuff like gardening and making soap, works all the time, and homeschooled her children. Very educated, devout, and kind of severe and austere.
The people there didn’t want to associate with her, she was not one of them. She had little good to say about them or the experience, and she seemed to have the same feelings for the mostly Guatemalan group (huge portion of our parish now) at the Basilica.
It was a different experience, seeing things from her perspective. I didn’t ask her what her position on immigration was, I let her lead the very interesting conversation because I wanted to hear what she thought. But I’d bet she is very opposed to open borders and the other liberal wish list regarding the illegals here.

uh….Mexicans and South America folks bailed on their countries due to government issues and impossible financial situations to live in….California is following the same Dictatorial Banana Republic Corrupt Leftist Agenda…..we should declare anyone wanting to migrate from California to anywhere else in the USA as illegal alien border jumpers and put them in jail until they pay a huge fine and duty to move out of California…..except those in Hollywood, which can only move to Canada or Haiti.

Good Morning Nyet. What a feast! Thank you. Good Morning Stellars, near and far! (New words for me: feria: a weekday of a church calendar on which no feast falls and festal: of or like a joyous celebration)
“Let us fast, then – whenever we see fit, and as strenuously as we should. But having gotten that exercise out of the way, let us eat. Festally, first of all, for life without occasions is not worth living. But ferially, too, for life is so much more than occasions, and its grand ordinariness must never go unsavored. But both ways let us eat with a glad good will, and with a conscience formed by considerations of excellence, not by fear of Ghosts.”

This museum curator just earned my total disrespect. The WH asked for a painting and they offered a gold toilet. And the toilet is titled “America”.
“The White House requested to borrow a Vincent Van Gogh painting from a museum to display it in the first family’s residence, but the museum offered a gold toilet instead.
The chief curator of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City responded to the White House’s request for the 1888 Van Gogh painting Landscape With Snow, saying that the museum is unable to loan the painting but could offer a gold toilet made by a contemporary and controversial Italian artist.
The curator, Nancy Spector, offered artist Maurizio Cattelan’s fully-functioning 18-karat gold toilet called America, which the museum just took off display.
“[The artist] would like to offer it to the White House for a long-term loan,” wrote Spector, a critic of President Donald Trump, in the email obtained by the Washington Post. “It is, of course, extremely valuable and somewhat fragile, but we would provide all the instructions for its installation and care.”
It was displayed in a public restroom on the fifth floor of the museum and available for patrons to use.
A Guggenheim spokeswoman confirmed that Spector emailed Donna Hayashi Smith, who works in the White House’s Office of the Curator. Spector and Smith declined to comment on the email.”

Here’s the article in case you’re interested. https://www.ecowatch.com/doomsday-clock-2018-2528611887.html

Thought I would share this. I was looking up info on hair color for older women. I couldn’t get past this paragraph because I couldn’t quit laughing. It just struck me funny.
“3. Another important advice while choosing colors is that they need to choose a hair color that compliments not only their skin tone but even the eye balls. Lighter eye balls go well with light hair colors while dark with dark. Dark colors go well even with the lighter eye balls.”

Mine hasn’t changed from dishwater blonde yet. Been having highlights for about 30 years to make it brighter & put some body in it. My mom gave me her gene for fine hair (it’s like cat fur, you can’t do much with it). She started wearing Paula Young wigs at 60, & never showed her natural hair again. When I was in school she gave me a permanent wave every August so I started school with a head of tight frizz which I hated. My senior picture was awful. I probably will start wearing a wig sooner than later just because they look so good & are lots less work than trying to do something with my hair.

But, when I went red about 20 years ago, I fell in love with it and just don’t want to give it up. Also, I got a shorter cut that I just let do what it wants and don’t have a problem with it. I lost a lot of the curl a couple of years ago for some reason. And, it didn’t come back, but I use Rough Paste on it and that seems to take care of any problems.

I asked my librarian wife if we had the recommended book (“On Writing Well” by William Zinsser), and she said no, but we have Strunk and White’s, “The Elements of Style”, which she says is very similar. She says I don’t really need it, bless her heart, but I have it in front of me now.
Yeah. Elements of Style. I’m gonna be looking gooood. On paper, at least.

Great little book. I currently don’t have a copy because I keep giving them away.

Just for the heck of it – here is a super easy (made out of boxed and canned stuff) cake that would be great for a potluck or a work birthday or just because. I’ve made it, and it is tasty. It’s called: PIG CAKE (I don’t know why).
http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/pig-cake/
PS: The recipe calls for 4 oz of Cool Whip. I used 8 oz by mistake the first time I made it. It’s good that way.

took one of these down to the local police precinct to give the officers, and they said not to call them pigs anymore….they are now LEOs….Trump said so…MAGA….so I took them some bean dip and Fritos and said forget the sanctuary stuff….kick them out but keep their coats….

Sounds like the Hummingbird cake from several years ago, except it doesn’t have bananas in it. I also like the reference to going back to all those great foods we were supposed to give up as a resolution on January 1st. Perhaps I will make this on January 31st, just because!

It’s not as sweet as Hummingbird cake, and quite moist. Personally, I don’t like extremely sweet frosting, and this one isn’t.

I am not sure if I should laugh at this or cry because my CA “leaders” are so crazy. And the la times thinks its great!
“Calderon, the Democratic majority leader in California’s lower house, has introduced a bill to stop sit-down restaurants from offering customers straws with their beverages unless they specifically request one.
Under Calderon’s law, a waiter who serves a drink with an unrequested straw in it would face up to 6 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
“We need to create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills, waterways, and oceans,” Calderon explained in a press release.
This isn’t just Calderon’s crusade. The California cities of San Luis Obispo and Davis both passed straws-on-request laws last year, and Manhattan Beach maintains a prohibition on all disposable plastics. And up in Seattle, food service businesses won’t be allowed to offer plastic straws or utensils as of July.

clearly there is a straw man argument in there somewhere…..my bychin is with the little ketchup foil squeezie packets and the tear off little salt and pepper containers for take out…then, there is the little packets of red pepper and of Parmesan cheese at the pizza place, and the flimsy napkins with advertising on them that make it embarrassing to take a bunch in your lunch sack to work…truthfully….the entire venue of commercial packaging of food stuff is just annoyingly wasteful.
but then……burgers and fries…… : < )

Will they arrest anyone who brings plastic straws into the restaurant and offers them to everyone in the place?
“Code 91 – got it? Nine one! Patron offering plastic straws…paddy wagon at the ready!”
For all restaurants who still have straws on the premises, make sure you order one with every meal whether you need it or not. Say it’s for the water…if they still offer that.
As of 2016, California’s population was 39.25 million, of which it is estimated 6% are residing there illegally. The entire nation of Canada has a population of 36.29 million.

Squirrel Gets Revenge on Chicago Politician Who Spoke Out Against Squirrels
Howard Brookins Jr., the city council member for Chicago’s 21st ward, was hospitalized by a squirrel after the politician publicly spoke out against the pesky rodents for being too “aggressive.”
Brookins was sent to the hospital with a skull fracture in a bicycle accident on Nov. 13, according to the Chicago alderman’s Facebook page.
The politician was riding his bicycle along Cal-Sag Trail when the squirrel ran in front of his bike. The rodent became wrapped in Brookin’s bicycle spokes, causing the councilman to flip over his handlebars, the Washington Post reported Tuesday. Brookins landed roughly and broke his nose, knocked out several teeth, and fractured his skull.

It cracked me up also. It’s Chicago – they’re lucky the squirrels aren’t throwing bullet casings at them from the trees.

I was talking to a man who owns drive-thru daiquiri shops in New Orleans. He said the NO city council passed a law the shops must give a paper wrapped straw with every drink purchased. This is because each daiquiri must be in a closed container to show it is not to be consumed by the driver or the person in the front seat. He said the drivers immediately throw the straw paper on the ground & push the straw into the drink container hole.
I think the California lawmakers’ heads will explode when they hear this.

California is considering 6 months in jail and a $!000 fine for waiters who offer plastic drinking straws to customers! They say it’s environmental, plus they cause wrinkles! I kid you not! The biodegradable straws cost 8 times as much as plastic.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
