The regret and despair of those who had stayed, choosing not to evacuate in spite of warnings, is irreparable—regret and despair in the moments when they realized what was happening around them, when it was too late to be safe—.

Suffering real world consequences of poor decisions is devastating and it is well for me to remember compassion as they are enduring and have endured losses that will never be made right.

There are hundreds of thousands of homes built in those areas of steep terrain that might be immediate, right around their house, or more removed – a quarter mile down the road – but there is a vulnerability that simply is a fact. We enjoyed so much spending time in the Ojai area during the 28 years we spent in SoCal. Beautiful towns and amazing geology.

Im just thinking about how all the houses built up on the hills are in trouble. So many old homes, small homes. Up through there and gaviota its always on fire every season. I dont remember the exact location of the zoo. I hope its not in trouble too.

I read that many of the homes destroyed overnight were not in the evacuation area.

Ojai was a travel destination when I was young, but didn’t visit it after my 40s since my mother’s uncles and aunts who lived there had died. Their homes (American Craftsman and California Bungalow styles) and properties were wonderful with great views from the hillsides. After the land was sold, the hillsides became tract home plots with the only reminder of the family’s existence being a street named for them.

One of the disturbing aspects of some online postings/comments regarding this disaster is the near “they deserved it” kind of attitude and a not-very-well-disguised envy of the rich and how they choose to spend their money. Not exactly a Conservative outlook.

For the last 20 years of my working life I worked directly for a very wealthy gentleman and was privy to all kinds of information regarding his investments and expenditures. Not once did I have the slightest envy of or disparagement toward how he spent his cash. He earned it by his wits and working hard, employing thousands. The beautiful things which he purchased were appreciated by discerning folk, and he often used his properties for philanthropic events for which he footed the bills.

So when seeing uncharitable comments regarding wealthy people about whom the commenters know nothing, it’s disturbing because it’s so uncalled-for and ignorant of the free market and wealth producers who believe in capitalism and contribute greatly to our society. Begrudgement doesn’t put one single dime into the pockets of the envious and does nothing but make a person miserable.
