As Lisa Murkowski pointed out, today is the shortest and darkest day of the year, but this tax legislation brings a bright spot for the country.

I wonder if I’ll get more than 12 or 13 hundred dollars back this year. I doubt it. Even with the cancellation of the health insurance fine mandate.
I make well below the poverty line for a single person. I get by. For ten or twelve years, I’ve gotten a total (MI + Fed) tax refund of $1,200 to $1,300. Every year, almost the same amount. I don’t expect that to change this March. I want to jump up and down and say “Yay!” for this, but it won’t affect my wallet, I bet.
Hopefully it will affect wages. But no. Our bosses will just go on more exotic golf and island resort outings next year, and buy more useless crap for their kitchens, that they don’t even work in, and not pay us one thin dime more.

I have to point this out. If you are getting that much “back” when your income is low, it means you are having too much money withheld during the year. Why are you loaning the government money interest free?

What, can I claim Tripod as a dependent? I really don’t know.
Then again, I use TurboTax, and not a real person. But the question is pertinent.
I guess it’s because I’d rather get a big refund every March, than a small bill. Business is slow here in March, and I don’t have a lot of money in March, because I’m not really good with money.
Maybe I can claim Tripod is autistic, identify as a woman, and have a couple of non-legit chilrens. Then I’d get more money back than my yearly income each year.
(Yes, I know folks who game the system like this. I’m honest, though, even on government forms. It’s kind of ingrained.)

And no, it’s not just because I’m white and cis-male.
Even if I were not, I wouldn’t lie on government forms.
Even though it’s allowed, and even encouraged, for people who aren’t white and cis-male.
I don’t dig stealing from my neighbors. It ain’t cool. I’d rather give to them.

Again, as long as your taxes are paid at the end of the tax year, you aren’t cheating.

You can claim multiple dependents in order to reduce your withholding. There are forms (probably on the internet) to figure how many to claim based on your income. It’s not gaming the system. It’s playing by their rules. Your taxes won’t change at the end of the year.

ADD: At this point you might as well wait until the new tax laws go into effect (after February 1, I think).

I do plan on waiting it out. Thank you.
