Even though hes in preschool, my little guy is having a Christmas performance. Last year he was so nervous he just had a cup of water he kept drinking from, but eventually did some of the performance. This year hes been carrying a toy stuffed lizard like a lucky rabbit foot during practice.
I made chocolate mint fudge today and told him he can have a piece if he can sing for me. Ill know on Wednesday.
Apparently its a popular song to do. Heres an older large scale version:

My 5 year old niece sang Jingle Bell Rock with about 6 of her classmates, she was so sweet, she had in pigtails and was nervously playing with one, she pulled the band out and her little pigtail just stuck straight out of the side of her head ❤️. The little boy next to her was dressed in a little suit and didn’t sing one word but just smiled and waved like a politician through the whole performance 😊. Another girl sang but someone in the audience must have been goofing around with her because every once in a while she would make a funny face and shake her fist at someone 😊.
Oh and my niece was hopping up and down like a bunny for about 50% of the song!
That was a joyful performance!

My oldest went to preschool and kindergarten at the junior college I was attending at the time. He refused to walk in with the class for any performances and would never sing. Once his teacher asked him if there was any song he would sing. He mentioned Whiskey River and that was the end of the effort to try and recruit him.
My daughter in law recently shared a video of my four year old grandson, who has autism, and his class at their Christmas performance. He is very enthusiastically singing Jingle Bells. Once he would never have joined in.

I am happy to hear your grandson with autism is singing enthusiastically. What a gift loving parents and early intervention is for children! This has also made my day!
Thank you Menagerie.
Did I ever tell the story about when we lived in NC and went to some kind of event in Durham? It ended up being some type of black celebration. We asked a few of the attendees what it was about but they didn’t know. We were literally the only white family there, 3 little blondish girls, everyone was super nice to us but when my two older daughters probably 7 and 9 at the time started singing Dixie I told them it might not be the best time 😊.

My sons were altar servers of course. The first time the middle son served with the oldest, the older son (yep, same troublemaker as above) tried telling him he was doing something wrong. Middle son inisisted he was right. They got into a shoving match on the altar.
My husband sat in the pew, quivering. I am serious. He was shaking. Barely cleared the front steps when the azz busting started. Thirty odd years later, they still both claim to be right.

Sounds like my girls. “Remember when…..” and that is where the stories cease to be the same.
When my oldest was about a year old we used to go to a beautiful old church in Steubenville, Ohio it had the beautiful high ceilings, once as we were walking in she yelled, I can’t remember why, but she discovered the echo in that hallowed church.
She started doing some type of howling yell just to hear it. We had to leave.

That is hilarious! Did she remember it the next time you went back?

We didn’t go back for a solid year, we went to the church closer to our home or to the Franciscan chapel. I am sure she would have remembered.

They performed in an LDS church last year but this year its at his small school. I think its going to be a bit too tight a fit. He has been yelling to hear his echoes too, luckily I stop him before he really gets going. La la laaaa!

My daughter was and is strong willed like an ox. She used to tell us that she never slept. And in truth she rarely slept. Even now at 26 she can get by on 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night. As a baby she was up ever hour and a half. Sometime we would drive for hours just to get her to sleep.
Once when she was about 18 months she was sitting on the floor with some toys and a sippy cup. I noticed that she was nodding off, something she had never done while playing, suddenly she shook herself, grabbed her sippy cup splashed water in her face and started playing again!
I know if I went back to that church she would have started to play with the echo again. We have to choose our battles 😜.

We used to drive my oldest son around at night too. Only way he would get to sleep sometimes.
When he was a toddler we discovered that he loved the rocking horses. He would jump them so hard they lifted off the ground. He wore them out, literally, but no matter how poor we were, we always sqeezed out money for those horses. Finally, when we had bought the biggest one, my husband welded a frame for it, and it lasted until he finally outgrew it.
He would fall asleep each night hugging the neck of the horse, and we would carefully untangle him and dress him in his pajamas and put him to bed.
I now have a grandson, Conner, as active and mischievious as my oldest son. I cannot for the life of me figure out which is worse. It seems to me Conner is, but I am thinking that is because I am forty years older now, and it is way harder to keep up!

My middle daughter had a bouncy horse. The type in a frame with springs attached to the four corners she bounced and bounced for hours.
Thankfully she only wore out springs and my husband could pick them up at the hardware store so we didn’t have to replace the entire horse!

When my son was a toddler, we had a hard time getting him to sleep. I would read book after book while he bounced from the bed to the wall. I am sure that is where the saying “bouncing off the walls” came from. He was fighting sleep. So, when it was time, I started holding him down so he couldn’t move. It took about 30 sec. for him to fall into a deep sleep. That was why he kept moving.

LOL Sounds like one of the best. 🙂 In his preschool performance, he wore a little suit and bowtie and looked so cool. Except, as usual, by the time he got up to speak his part with two others, his shirt tail was hanging out. And, the little girl got all confused about what she was supposed to say and he prompted her……..very loudly. LOL

My mother taught kindergarten in church schools for 35 years. Children started at 3 years old. Every year the Christmas pageant practice started in November, learning words to the songs & choosing who would do special parts. Mary, Joseph, the wise men, angels & shepherds could be a challenge since they had to have some sense of decorum. I recall years when one or another “improvised” or added to the script due to enthusiasm, boredom or distractions. Of course, everyone in the audience loved it.

One of our wisemen who must have been about 3 at the time fell asleep right in the middle of the Christmas play and fell over. Thankfully the entire floor was covered with hay and he just slept through the rest of the play 🙂 .

This was while I was in the Byzantine church. The priest had the entire floor covered with hay including the altar, he took all the chairs out (no pews because technically we are supposed to stand the whole time) and put in in hay bales for people to sit on. It was truly beautiful. The children all wore whatever their parents put them in, my girls had white pillow cases adorned with silver garland, the pillow cases had holes for their heads and arms.

All our snow is gone. The lakes are all frozen, not thick enough for walking on and the ice is getting thinner with the warm weather. With Christmas coming and visitors heading to relative’s houses I’m sure that won’t stop some of them from tempting fate and putting their lives and others in danger by “testing” the ice.
A good time of year to pray for people to use their brains.

No sir he doesn’t, he looks like a man who brings the same soberness to office that requires him to always have his wife present at a meal if he is dining with a woman.
Nikki Haley has acquired that look. President Trump is changing people. I believe he is very soundly making people understand the gravity of their choices, their behavior, their votes and their ultimate accountability before Someone not interested in spin, power or wealth.

My friends were at mass and the priest was giving a homily about accepting Christ and how so much of the world continues to reject him. He then went to the manger and picked up baby Jesus and said “Will you accept him? Will you? You? Who will take baby Jesus into their heart? Will Jesus remain in the manger, will no one accept him? Who?”
My friends 3 or 4 year old daughter yelled “I’ll take him!” and ran up to the altar ❤️.

This is quite an amazing article. The once articulate Victor David Hanson ties himself into so many knots trying to box President Trump into Hanson’s image that Hanson ends up sounding much like the liberals he used to square away with his wit and clarity. Sad.
The mind bending cognitive theatrics in this piece would make a Circus du Soleil contortionist blush.
How far the convenient conservatives, the Never Trumpers, have fallen.
Is Trump an Island?

Yesterday as I was packing, I came across a ragged box taped like Fort Knox and when I opened the box I found a ragged T-Shirt, a photo of my son with a smile from ear to ear and an original poem. I was immediately transported to the evening when my six year old son informed me that he needed a “Christmas Elf” costume for the school play the next afternoon.
My spouse and I were as poor as evicted church mice at the time, but after our son went to sleep, I found an old t-shirt in the rag bucket, I tore down a green curtain in the bathroom and I took out my “Christmas” sewing machine, thread, buttons and determination and created an ‘elf’ costume complete with a pompom poof on the hat and after the outfit was finished, I sat down, wrote a poem to the teacher, put it in a box with the outfit and the next morning I sent it off with my son on the school bus.
I haven’t looked inside that box since I packed it away 35+ years ago, and I thought I’d share my words that I tucked away so many years ago.
Twas a quarter to eight when the thought struck my mind,
The school play was Tuesday, I hadn’t much time.
I pulled out the scraps and a T-Shirt, (a rag)
Got out my machine with no zig and no zag,
Then on to the thread and the colors I see,
There’s no green, no white, so I’ll use ivory.
Tis a quarter to three and the buttons are on.
I think that it’s finished, what more could go wrong?
The needle has broken, my fingers have bled,
I’ve run out of patience, what more need be said?
I’ll fold it, I’ll box it, I’ll send it to school,
They’ll look at the seam work and think I’m a fool.
But, I did it for Christmas, and was it a bother?
Not really, you see, I’m a little boy’s mother.
And that, is my cherished Christmas memory for this year. :0)

Oh, my. Exactly.
A little different story for my little boy. Christmas, 1971
He was three or four years old at the time, our second son. It was a given that the Sunday School teachers thought there was nothing holier on a most holy night than to put short white surplices on all the small children (to make them look like a choir) and then finish it off with great big, over-size, bigger than the child’s head, red bow, attached right under the chin.
He had seen the preparations. He knew he was expected to accept that big red bow. He didn’t mind singing. He knew all the words. He knew how to stand with the children in a line and do what they needed to do at the right time. But even at that age he had a sense of personal dignity that somehow KNEW when someone was doing something that made him uncomfortable and that he was supposed to do it anyway and I saw the sort of panicky look on his face.
I talked with him before we went to the church and said, “Eric, I’ll talk to the director. There’s no reason you have to wear that big red bow. You can stand in the second row or something and no one will notice that you don’t have a red bow on. Will that work for you?”
Yes, he thought it would.
I thought the conversation with the director had resolved the situation. Then, walking through the parish hall just before the children were ready to go in as everyone was taking their seats, I saw Eric. With a big, fat, red bow, tied under his chin.
There he stood with a desperate look on his face, and seeing me walk by. His eyes were brimming with tears. He was completely silent and standing where he was supposed to stand. After I had left the room, after the conversation, they had gone ahead and put the bow on him anyway.
I walked over to him, squatted down, removed the bow, the tears were tumbling by this time by but he was still quiet and standing still. I wiped his tears and asked him if he thought he could still go in with the children and sing, if the bow was gone.
Yes, he thought he could. And he did.
It makes me really mad when big people ignore the clear thoughts and responses and sense of dignity that even little people are working hard to do right. Little children are not our property or our props. Ever.

litenmaus, that is truly beautiful, not only the remembrance but the act which shows a woman of fine and lovely temperament. It made me think of Proverbs 31….
Verse 10: A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
And 27-31: She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
Bless you!

Bit misty myself, thank you.

That was fabulous, litenmaus. Made me choke up.
My cherished Christmas memory is my 17 year old son falling asleep in my arms as I sat in my recliner watching his mother put ornaments on the tree he and I had just set up and strung the lights.
He’s 22 now, and just last Saturday night we hosted a dinner for him and 10 of his college friends, who brought food and drink and cooked chicken breast with mushrooms, rice, and steamed broccoli, while I barbecued 9 pounds of spare ribs. Great bunch of kids. 🙂

My son is 42 years old & 6’4″ and on the rare occasion that I get to see him, he still likes to try to sit on my lap and give me hugs, It melts this mama’s heart every time he does it. :0)

Does anyone here have familiarity with the Spokane Washington area? Its for a family relocating. Thanks if you do.

Gil, have they chosen a place to live? If not, Spokane Valley is nice, as is Liberty Lake. Personally I don’t much like downtown Spokane itself. The last time I was there Mexican-style graffiti was all over the place. The Spokane River which flows through is nice as is the Riverfront Park, though, and they keep that up pretty well.
Perhaps have your friends check out Coeur d’Alene, Idaho which is about 40 miles east of Spokane. Lake Coeur d’Alene is beautiful, and downtown is right on it at one point and one block off for the rest. Downtown CDA is adorable. One downside in CDA is that doctors are in short supply but it’s somewhat that way in Washington state, too, with physicians assistants (PAs) doing a lot of the work. And CDA has virtually no public transportation. Most of the transpo to the hospital and doctor appointments is free through a service, though.
And if politics are important to them, Washington is uber liberal bordering on communistic over by Seattle. Washington state doesn’t have state income tax but I imagine that’s coming soon. The state is very poorly run.
Idaho does have state income tax but the governor is Republican as is the legislature and their U. S. Senators and Representatives and so they run things fairly conservative.
Make sure they go to the Spokane city website and the state website.

Not decided yet. Just got a job in spokane itself. Whole process going to take 3-6 months. I think for the job he has to reside in washington, cannot live out if state. They are conservative and were told this is more conservative for washington. Coming from California, im not sure how they compare.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
