GOP’s tax bill cancels billions in tax credits claimed by illegal immigrants

Remember this? Why Illegal Immigration Is A Problem, Part 1

The new GOP tax bill includes the means to shut off the faucet.

According to documents released by the White House in advance of the full budget, it would limit eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit to recipients “who are authorized to work in the U.S.” The EITC is a benefit for people with low to moderate income, and the child tax credit similarly benefits low-income households.

As budget director Mick Mulvaney said,

“How do I go to somebody who pays their taxes, and say, ‘Look, I want you to give this earned income tax credit to somebody who’s working here illegally’? That’s not defensible, and it’s a reasonable accommodation to simply ask them for Social Security numbers.”

According to The Washington Times:

The new GOP tax overhaul would strip illegal immigrants of the ability to claim several major tax credits, saving the government $23.1 billion over the next decade, according to the bill’s authors.

For years Republicans have complained that despite a general ban on taxpayer benefits flowing to illegal immigrants, the IRS has allowed them to collect the child tax credit, the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Efforts to shut down those claims have been tried in the House but have never cleared Congress. [For example, look up “Child Tax Credit Integrity Preservation Act”]

But the new tax overhaul tries again, calling for taxpayers to have to submit work-eligible Social Security numbers in order to claim the credits.

Many illegal immigrants pay taxes using Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers, which the IRS issues to those who aren’t authorized to work in the U.S., but whom the government still wants to pony up to Uncle Sam.

The IRS pays out billions of dollars a year in tax credits to people filing using ITINs each year, according to the agency’s inspector general.

The inspector general has repeatedly urged the IRS to stop making the payments, but the agency has refused, saying it interprets the law related to those tax credits to cover illegal immigrants as well as other taxpayers.

Seems that many of the RINOs and almost all of the Democrats want some type of provision protecting DACAers in this bill.
Come on guys this is what is wrong with most of the bills passed lately. Most bills have so much unrelated stuff in them that no can or does even read them. I truly wish they would pass some type of bill that limits the number of pages a bill can be, and the relationship of the items within the bill.
