We used to have the hurricane hunters at Palm Beach AFB back in the 50s. They flew WB-29/WB-50s and would do their engine runups at the end of the runway about a block from our house. I can remember their propwash making the huge sea pines sway and smell the exhaust they blew down our street.
The WB-29 the flew and the WB-50 revision of the B-29 were only about 15 years old at the time but the WC-130J they fly now is the latest iteration of the 130 design that goes back to the early 1950s. Over 50 have died on misdions since the Hurricane Hunters were formed and now the are a Reserve unit, weekend warriors putting their lives on the line on a part-time job.
