As of 1:00 pm, Irma is south of Marco Island, category 4, with a well-defined eye. It is moving faster again – 13-14 mph – and will be over Marco Island within the next hour, and headed directly for Naples, following Hwy 41.
Once the eye passes, the wind direction will reverse, and storm surges will become a danger. During the past several hours ocean levels have dropped as the wind pushed the water away from land.

A small switch of wind would be enough to take him off that balcony, I think.
Small judgments can sometimes have big consequences. I remember a late afternoon in Minnesota when a powerful thunderstorm with much lightning was directly on us, with lightning strikes all around us. Our large tent was set up in the yard for the enjoyment of the grandchildren when they visited. Grant decided that he must save the tent, and he was about four steps off the back porch headed for the tent with everything crashing all around when I screamed/yelled at him, “That tent is not worth your life.” Thankfully he came back and let the tent fend for itself. It did survive.

This guy needs the voice of sanity yelling at him to get out of the hurricane.

Sorry Sharon I thought I attached a picture of a chap out in hurricane Irma with his cell phone trying to get a wind reading. I don’t know what I did with it.

lovely, I saw that one you mention somewhere else, I think. I wondered if that was a weather man from some TV station trying to make a unique video — whoever it was, it was silly.

The caption said something about the chap trying to prove what the windspeed was 🙄.

Probably the worst thing is that they removed the plywood and broke the glass, so the store will be completely open to hurricane wind/water damage.

I guess the video would provide him evidence to the insurance company for criminal mischief coverage as well as wind coverage.
The awesomeness of the storm and the wickedness of the heart of individuals makes me feel a little sick.

Watching NBC2, they were showing boats in the canals in Cape Coral area sitting in the mud – water was gone.

I’ve been thinking about the panic/sometimes stupid/sometimes heroic decisions and actions that are manifested in the midst of really bad/hard stuff…. and about my own history of such things….
I find it difficult beyond telling to be literally and completely helpless, regardless of the cause or context. It’s amazing how undeniable helplessness screams for action, for answers, etc.
Literal helplessness is very hard to endure, whether for five minutes or five weeks.Very often, the experience requires that the individual “simply” endure it and it runs its course and on the other side, things settle.
That is not easy, which is, of course, why many don’t do it but strike out or act out in one way or another.
