Make your own. It takes just a few minutes, and you know for sure what is in them.

A couple of weeks ago, I bought cat food in a pinch, at a local Arab-owned convenience store. Tripod tried to eat it, puked it up.

I put the bowl and him outside, and he and the local alley cat (nameless as of yet) wouldn’t touch it. The icing on the cake was when a wild raccoon walked up to the bowl, sniffed it, and walked away. Even raccoons won’t eat this stuff. The store owner swore that people’s animals love it. I think he’s lying.

I’ve been here a while. Just after 9/11/01, I asked, innocently and with no malice aforethought, just after moving here, “So, where are you folks from?” They had flags and “God Bless America” on the marquee sign at this convenience store. The kid behind the counter, probably mid-20s, said, “We’re from India. A lot of people think we’re Muslim.”

I looked down at his tattooed arm, with the scimitar and the Arabic writing that says “There is no God but Allah, and Mo-ham-head is is Profit”, an image anyone with knowledge recognizes, and I immediately recognized it, and I said, “I can’t understand why people would think that.” I looked him straight in the eye, and back to his tattoo, and back to his eyes. He kicked a soccer ball with me every now and then, about 7 years back. He disappeared, or went to fight the jihad, a year after.

His family still owns this store, haven’t seen him since. Or his little bro, with similar tattoos.

Dad’s name is Singh. The wife, also working there, never says a word, and looks beaten down and chained.

I try to avoid shopping there.
