    • I played with that thing for about two hours last night. It makes for excellent backing tracks for jamming on a guitar. If they added more vinyl, it would be even better. If I had a tablet it would be even better, with the touch screen interface.

      (It’s two turntables, a crossfader, muting, and a box of good old vinyl records, with many cool options on-the-fly.)

  4. Hey Stellarites, many of you have been praying for my son Josiah surrounding his recent surgery. This morning he has his post-op visit with the surgeon & the expected removal of the catheter. It’s been a rough 2 weeks for him but he’s hanging in there…& hanging on to Jesus. Thank you so much for praying for him! I’ll let you know if anything unexpected happens, but barring issues his next likely medical “hurdle” will be the weaning down/off process from the anti-rejection meds he’s been on since his Liver Transplant 4 years ago…Blessings to all…

      Good morning, Menagerie! Thanks again for the link to Catholic Stand, and the article by the NYC cabbie. Yes, I saw a lot of myself in that guy. We can, as St. Francis said, speak the Gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words. Even when we use words, we have to know whether to use dialectic (rarely, nowadays) or resort to rhetoric, which is the only verbal argument style most can even be influenced by. And even THEN, we have to know the type of person and the corresponding type of rhetoric that will work with them. Sometimes only well-placed hints can plant seeds.

      A very useful article, which I’ll post again, in case anyone missed it.

      I doubt (and hope I won’t) I’ll ever be in NYC, but if I do, I’d shake this guy’s hand.

    A Love Story for Lovers and Lovers of Bacon. From:

    The Market Assistant, Containing A Brief Description Of
    Every Article Of Human Foof Sold In The Public Markets
    Of The Cities of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, And Brooklyn;
    Iincluding The Various Domestic And Wild Anilmals, Poultry, Game,
    Fish, Vegetables, Fruits, &c, &c. WITH MANY CURIOUS INCIDENTS AND ANECDOTES.
    BY
    Thomas F. Devoe
    PUblished by HURD AND HOUGHTON. 1867

    “A curious custom originated at a very early period, of presenting a flitch of bacon to all married couples upon certain conditions, which are fully explained in the following. The New York Gazette and Post Boy, September 30, 1751, shows that, “On the 20th of last month (June), John Shakeshanks, wool-comber, and Anne his wife, of the parish of Weathersfield, in Essex, appeared at the customary court of the manor of Dunmow-park, in that county, and claimed the bacon, according to the custom of that manor, which was delivered to them with the usual formalities–this is the only claim that has been made since the year 1701.”

    “The famous old story is as follows, viz.: one Robert Fitzwalter, a powerful baron in this country, in the reign of Henry III., instituted a custom in the priory there, that, ‘Whatever married man did not repent of being married, or differ and dispute with his wife, within a year and a day after his marriage, if he and his wife would swear to the truth of it, kneeling upon two stones in the priory church-yard, set up for that purpose, in presence of the prior and convent, should have a gammon of bacon.’ This custom is still kept up, notwithstanding the dissolution of the monasteries, only instead of the prior and convent, the business is now transacted at a court-baron, held before the steward of the lord of the manor. It may be some amusement to our readers to see the words of the oath on this occasion, which are to the following purpose, viz.:

    “You do swear by custom of confession,
    That you ne’er made nuptial transgression;
    Nor since you were married man and wife,
    By household brawls, or contentious strife,
    Or otherwise, in bed or at board,
    Offended each other in deed or in word;
    Or in a twelvemonth’s time and a day,
    Repented not in thought any way;
    Or since the church-clerk said Amen,
    Wished yourselves unmarried again,
    But continue true, and in desire,
    As when you joined hands in holy choir.”

    The sentence pronounced for their receiving the bacon is in words to the effect following, viz.:

    “Since to the conditions, without any fear,
    Of your own accord you do freely swear,
    A whole gammon of bacon you do receive,
    And bear it away with love and good leave,
    For this is the custom of Dunmow well-known;
    Tho’ the pleasure be ours, the bacon’s your own.”

    I suppose that the moral of the story is ‘be nice or no bacon for you!’

              Oregon is returning to normal temps today – first day in two weeks that our high will not be the mid-90s or 100s. The last couple of days have been with heavy humidity as well, and this entire week has had heavy, heavy smoke 24/7. Lived in SoCal for 28 years and only remember a few days where the LA smog (we lived within reach of that for about 10 years) was this bad. It’s been nasty.

              Apparently a million people are coming to see the eclipse and there will be hitch to bumper trailers and 5th wheels in every city’s public park as far as the eye can see.

              A genuine worry they have with the fire concerns is that many visitors will genuinely not understand that no vehicle – even passenger cars – can safely be driven off road or parked in pasture-type areas because the heat of the vehicle underside can easily spark a fire.

              I do understand some of the concerns. They are pre-positioning assets and materiel everywhere possible for the onslaught.

              I had wondered why the specific destination of Oregon since the eclipse extends clear across Trump Country (according to the authorities) – but realize that the stats for “clear skies in August” are far better in the west, so those who have both the money and the time are headed this way.

              It would sure be disappointing for them if the widespread fires impact the viewing. Oh, well. Even then, when total darkness hits, it hits, so there’s that.

              I hope they all have a good time and get here and gone without killing themselves or us.

              Out to mow the lawn in the smog now. I do not plan to fall on my face.

              Oh. Wait. I didn’t plan to fall on my face last time either.

              We takes our chances with life and ourselves, don’t we?

    This came in an email today. A cop pulls over a man whose license says he is a woman and now is in danger of having a written reprimand put on his record. I didn’t expect to see this nonsense in Florida. Please sign the petition to stop this if you live in Florida.

    In January of this year, Shelby Kendall, the man in the accompanying picture, was pulled-over by Fort Lauderdale police officer, James Brinton, for drag racing.
    His license states that Mr Kendall is a female, instead of a male.
    But, as Mr Kendall presents himself, both in physique and dress as a male, Officer Brinton made the logical and reasonable decision to correct this designation on Mr Kendall’s citation, believing that an error had occurred at the DMV when Kendall’s license was initially issued.
    And, now, for having the audacity to use his common sense and powers of observation, Officer Brinton may receive a written reprimand for “mis-gendering” Mr Kendall as a man!
    This petition appeals to the City Manager of Fort Lauderdale, to do the rational thing and withdraw the threatened reprimand.

    Mr Kendall filed a complaint against Officer Brinton after receiving his citation – and, the Citizens Police Review Board of Fort Lauderdale has now subsequently recommended that Officer Brinton receive a written reprimand…in addition to the whole Fort Lauderdale Police Department being forced to watch a Department of Justice video on transgenderism.

    By officially reprimanding a police officer for using his powers of observation to make a decision in a case like this, where life and limb were not at stake, it would make a mockery of common sense and it would belittle the decision-making capability of police officers in Fort Lauderdale and throughout the State of Florida.

    The tyranny of (trans)gender ideology – which, at its heart, lies a deliberate attempt to make human sexuality fluid, and, in doing so, deliberately destroy the natural and genetic differences between men and women – is succeeding in eliminating the use of reason, itself.
    This is wrong and destructive for society.
    Yours faithfully,
    Scott Schittl and the whole team at CitizenGO

    PS – The decision is in the hands of the City Manager, Mr Lee Feldman, and could be made at any time. So, please sign this petition now, and help vindicate Officer Brinton’s use of common sense! Thank you.

    Anyone RESIDENT in Florida may sign this petition, here:

    Just thought of something else – impact-wise – regarding the eclipse.

    Portland airport car rentals have obligated them to rent out between 1500-2000 more cars than they having parking room for!!!!!!

    So on the front end, they will be feeding them into the airport over the 72 hours or so (over the long weekend) preceding – but – here’s the funny part: the great majority of those who have flown in for the eclipse from Thursday to Sunday are leaving on Monday night!

    Won’t that be fun? I wonder who they have working on the dynamics involved in processing those vehicles in when they are all returned at sort of the same time? And there’s no room for them?

    Perhaps some of the dealerships in the nearby area will be collecting nice fees for parking all those cars for a day or so until they can be removed hence.

    I suspect that the local news will be infuriating/amusing/interesting/shaking-my-head crazy for 2-3 days.

    I’m just staying home, I can assure you. Any eclipse they will be seeing I can see from my back yard and I’m tickled about that. I’m about 20 miles from center (in the middle of the 70 mile wide swatch and will have over a minute of totality. Probably should check my privilege regarding that.

    I just rode around town for a couple of hours. Super busy, as it’s National Blueberry Festival weekend. Talked with ten or so random, wonderful people, as I am wont to do.

    One was a retired Michigan Corrections Dept. worker. He hates and distrusts people, any more. He had a bit to say about “the blacks” and “the mexicans”. I can understand his perspective, after 30 years in that occupation. He served in Vietnam. He was also in transport (as in, transporting criminals), and pulled Jack Kevorkian’s prison ID, the real card, given to him by Kevorkian himself, out of his wallet, just to show me.

    We’re looking down this bluff, toward the marina, and seeing all these people walking around, giving us their business.

    I told him that I love everyone, including the four or so ex-cons I work with, and the illiterate one I even take orders from, and the Mexican family at my former kitchen that I speak with every day.

    We walk back up the sidewalk, and he points out his little grandson, and tells me his name, and asks me to say hi and use his name (and his middle name). I did. The kid is sitting in the grass by the curb, and is astonished, and says, “How’d you know my name?!” I said, “Because I know your grandpa! And I bet your middle name is Eugene!” He was stunned. I said, “My middle name is my grandpa’s name, too!”

    I try to do this every day. Just to talk with people, and show them Love. It brings me joy.

    There’s never a dull day, when you talk with random strangers every day. I hope I left Eugene with a seed, that people aren’t all that bad, mostly. Maybe he’ll come to our restaurant this evening, or one of the others I recommended.

    I had to laugh at this article. Notice the rules/laws to immigrate to Canada are similar to what Trump wants. Actually I really hate all the lying. These laws have already been in force here as far as I know. My cousin had to sign for her DIL to immigrate from Denmark years ago. They had to promise to sponsor her, support her and pay for her medical bills, etc. And, she was already married to my cousin’s son.

    “Couple from South Carolina Moving to Canada Because Trump”
    The couple went through the necessary immigration requirements including background checks, employment history, and meeting the minimum amount in a savings account. They’ve procured an apartment, checked on jobs — she an office manager, he a termite inspector — and they can’t wait to get there and live with the “incredible people.”

    So I’ve been meaning to ask for while how many of y’all, like me, are tired of Matt Drudge’s recent and decided lean to the left? 16. Here’s an update on Josiah (which I’m copying/pasting from my medically based carepages blog):

    “Today Josiah had his post-op visit with the Pediatric Urologist. The good news is that the catheter was able to be removed & there was no apparent infection. The bad news is that a “fistula” developed & part of the surgical site did not heal properly. At this point the doctor wants to see Josiah again in about a month to re-assess where things are. If it’s necessary to have another surgical intervention that can’t occur for another 6 months.

    The bottom line is that Josiah still needs prayer for his body to heal up properly. Though the doctor said there is about a 5% chance for the fistula to close on its own that is no deterrant to the Lord. Please continue to lift Josiah to the Lord for the complete healing & closure of the fistula. In the event that further surgery becomes necessary please pray that the repair is minimal enough so that he won’t need to come home on a catheter again, something that made this surgical recovery extremely difficult…

    Thanks so much for lifting Josiah to the Lord recently for this difficult surgery & recovery process…& for those of you that have been journeying with us for the long haul…Thank you so much for “coming alongside” many of our complex experiences in caring for Josiah’s myriad needs/issues.

    God Bless YOU All Richly in Christ Jesus!!!”

    This post is from here: http://www.carepages.com/carepages/JournalingForTheJazzman/updates/3860044

    Also I’m going to post again the link for the 4th Anniversary of Josiah’s Liver Transplant post on my wordpress blog (it’s abbreviated mostly from material at carepages but has the bulk of major aspects of the Liver Transplant journey on one page). At least one reader has been blessed by our testimony of God’s grace & provision through some extremely trying complex experiences. If you do end up reading any part of that journey please drop me a line. We are hoping that “the word of our testimony” can be an encouragement to others to hang tough while hanging on to Jesus during journeys in the Valley of the Shadow of Death!

    Blessings to all & thank you for praying for us!
