For our 30th anniversary my husband gave me the cutest little black lab pup. I names him Riley. He came riding up the driveway on my husband’s shoulder, and he fell into my arms, licking my face madly. Then he raced around, trying to get to the woods, tore through my hostas, and finally came inside and hid under the bed.
That night I made the mistake of taking him out without a leash. Seeing the moths in the moonlight and hearing the croaking frogs was too exciting for a little puppy, and he took off. It took me quite a few panicked minutes to run down the black disappearing pup in the dark.
He still licks my face, likes his hides hole under the porch instead of the bed, and disappears into the night woods, these days chasing a coon, a possum, the occasional deer. I’ve had him 11 years, and he’s one of the great loves of my life.

Black labs are the best dogs in the world! Mine will be 5 years old in August, and her name is Gracie. DH and I are in the process of looking for a house on one of the large lakes around here, which will be her dream of heaven–at least in the summer.
