I thought of that when making the comment. My brother had a dairy farm in California, and I think the only time he got away was for his grandfather’s funeral, and only then because his wife, son, and hired man took care of things while he was gone.

I also have the problem of needing to rule out foreign countries where l’ve shot at folks or they’ve shot at me. China’s out after they hacked my 30-plus years of security investigations while Czarina automatically rules out all 3rd world and many 2nd world countries. Oh yeah, and there’s that whole Moslem terrorist thing.

If we are to believe the weatherguessers they’re predicting about twenty inches of rain over a few days depending on the storm’s direction. I’m looking at 8 to 11 inches, or at least that’s what I’m planning on.

My older grandson just boarded a plane for California. Two days of Japanese culture and language orientation at Berkeley (boo, hiss), then on to six weeks in Japan as an exchange student. He will spend the first few weeks attending a high school in Odate while living with a Japanese family (they speak some English). My GS has been studying Japanese for three years, and believes that he is up to it!
In any event, he is off on his first independent adventure, and we are all wishing him well, even if it is with a bit of trepidation. I sent him a long-distance “hug” and a sincere “have fun!”, as well as this very cool 3-D card of “Lucky Cat” (a bit of spending money may have been in there too):

This has been a goal of his for three years! In his words, I became interested in Japanese culture when I started practicing Shotokan Karate a few years ago. Karate goes beyond just the martial art, it’s about upholding values like humility, respect, and honesty and it’s about passing down a tradition to the next generation. My experience with karate was pivotal to my starting to think about different cultures and the effects that events have had on the world and the cultures and religions that have formed around those events.
I am very proud, as he was awarded two scholarships that cover much of the costs, although there was still a healthy amount he had to save and got as gifts or donations. His note to me (and I am sure to the others who sent him gifts):
Dear Grandma, I am overwhelmed and moved by the support I have received for this trip from friends and family. I won’t forget the generosity that has been shown to me. I hope to make the best use of my time in Japan, learn a lot, teach a lot, and of course make all of you proud. Again, thank you so much.

Was he studying formal Japanese the women speak or that particular Hapabese the men speak in a non-business, non-family setting? Wasted a lot of time picking up Japanese from the military folks; not wasted actually, I just can’t use it where anyone with a low profanity threshold is within listening range.

Seen on Facebook. This comment is by someone I almost always totally disagree with, and I don’t necessarily agree with this one either, but it is thought provoking:
I know that for some time now you have been fixated on this idea of the West being overrun by Islam.
I think you have it all backward, frankly.
The West has won the war of civilizations. From Dubai to Tokyo to Beijing to Moscow and even to Teheran, the West is the winner. Every major city in the world looks like NY. Capitalism and consumerism have won the day. You find Starbucks and McDonalds worldwide. Other competing cultures have been effectively crushed. The world is now the West. It’s over. We won.
I am sure you have read Civilization: The West and the Rest.
We own the planet. I don’t think you have to worry about an Islamic revival or takeover. You are not going to see mosques where you now have Starbucks. Quite the opposite.
What you are seeing in places like London or Brussels are the last gasps of a dead culture and a dead civilization. These are the death throes, not the first green sprouts of life. Islam is a dead culture. It has no art, no literature, no music, no movies, no TV, no nothing… except death. This will not survive.
The death throes are angry and they are violent but they are nothing but a death rattle.
Don’t grasp defeat from the jaws of victory. We win. Worldwide we win, and if you don’t think so, go for a walk in Shanghai. The heartland of Communism looks like LA.

Although I do agree with a tad of what is said about Western culture on the move, evidenced by the election of Donald Trump, the resurgence of unapologetic patriotism, the revolts of peasants in places like China which are always put down, the Arab Spring (which had potential) I disagree with the posters opinion, it is a misguided argument, we are not exporting the West (and why would Liberals consider this a success if we were the West is evil according to Islam and the Left). The powers that be in other countries are making themselves wealthier by importing some of the West’s economy without the West’s freedom.
Here is a picture of an Islamic Starbucks. Notice that they are not using that rape inducing slut as their logo. Safety first 🙄 .
Starbucks in Saudi Arabia
The world is changing, it is getting smaller, but the rabid Islamic savages and ideologues of the Left are at the moment currently fighting the hardest, loudest and most violently to have the world turn on their edge. Traditional Western culture is waking up to the fact that our life style and our freedom is at a very precarious pinnacle therein and in God lies our hope.
The death throes are angry and they are violent but they are nothing but a death rattle.
This in particular is very dangerous thinking, we are not experiencing the death rattle of Islam and Liberalism we are experiencing a grotesque hybrid birth of a dangerous beast. A beast that says that Steve Scalise’s shooting was of his own making, a beast that truly believes that Donald Trump is a bigger danger to women and freedom than is Islam.
Civilized society can defeat the barbarism of Islam and the violent hateful Left but we must have the stomach to listen to the true death rattle without covering our ears or rescuing it from it’s demise.

Interesting thoughts, although I don’t agree that we can relax about Islam. Lovely has some good thoughts on the subject. We can’t forget that Islam has subsided at times throughout history. Remember the Crusades. Remember Spain – etc. The only way to preserve our way of life is to be forever vigilant.

Nope. I don’t agree due the individual misidentifying the issue as to what is going on. It’s also a very myopic view of Western civilization. Just because there is a fast food place of American origin in every country of the world does not mean that country is “Western”.
It reads like a mix of socialistic pap.

There was a column called “Laughter is the Best Medicine” that contained nothing but.
That was a great magazine in the 80s for me. I just thought of that about 2 minutes ago, after watching half of this video, wherein someone is making prank calls to pizza places using only the vocal samples from an insane Daedric Prince in the videogame Skyrim.

Life In These United States was another good monthly humor column.
I think there was a military one, too, IIRC.
There was an anecdote about a drill sgt doing a roll call, using a sheet of paper with names on it: Johnson! (SIR, PRESENT, SIR!), Jones! (SIR, PRESENT, SIR!) Seeback!…
… no response… SEEBACK!! …looks around angrily… …looks back at the paper…
Then the sgt flips the paper over and continues calling names. Heh.
RD was indeed great, back then. Not so much for the last two or more decades.

When I see fronts like this, or rainbows, I can’t help but run and tell people.
I was looking for a good vantage point to see the rainbow (which was about an hour after the cool-looking front), and ran to the parking lot next door, where there was a group of people, three generations. The grandfather had a decorated military ballcap on, and I shook his hand and thanked him, like I always do, and said that I truly appreciate it.
He said not everybody does. While the mom was out at the street, as I recommended she do to take pics of this rainbow, he pointed out everyone in his passel of progeny to me, proudly, telling me their ages and their relationship to him. Somehow he told me he was from FL, and asked me when I was going to move there. Heh.
I said, smiling, in a thick Boston accent (which I can do well), “Why do gotta New Yoahk accent?” He laughed and said, “Okay, I’m from New Yoahk! Ya got me.”
All this happened within five minutes. Maybe ten. 😀 😀 😀

Those pictures are outstanding, Wooly.
I especially love the second one of that incredible front! You’re going to think I am crazy, but if I cock my head off to the right just a teensy bit, it reminds me of the fluffy white dog from Neverending Story!
Seriously, though – they are beautiful!

Thank you, Puzz!
Excellent observation, too! You’re thinking of Falkor. That movie was wonderful. The book was even better… it was printed in two different colors of ink, one for the Real World, and one for the book Bastian was reading.
