I saw the new Pirates movie and loved it almost as much as the first one. 🙂

It’s Depp. If he’s in it, it’s going to be good.
Benny and Joon comes to mind. That was a masterpiece, and may have been his first role.
I only saw the first Pirates. I should watch the rest. I quit watching movies and TV for a long, long time. I watch a movie maybe once a year. If that. Call it a boycott. They hate me. Why do I want to give them my dime?
I do appreciate Depp’s abilities, though.
Like Tom Hanks. Shut up and act. I hate his politicking, but I love his acting.
Hanks plays five wildly different characters in Cloud Atlas.

Agree with you on everything but frequency of movie watching. I’m a streamer, lol… they don’t get my dimes. Benny and Joon is many masterpieces rolled up in the mastery of the film. It will be a classic for a long time I think.
Cloud Atlas was an amazing movie. I knew the actors played different roles and had to work at seeing them all. A few I had to look up! CA was also small masterpieces rolled up! I think longest movie of all time, but it was well worth the time invested.
Depp’s politics (and Hanks and most of Hollywood’s) have really put a damper on me. I am in no particular rush to watch Depp’s latest pirates movie – even streaming – but he’s certainly got a huge body of superlative work behind him.

To be honest, I am not that crazy about movies, but I have a really sweet friend who has psoriasis and has trouble standing or walking very long. It is one of the few things she can do. So, it’s a small thing I can do for her.

That is so good of you, mom. I’m certainly glad you have each other. The small things mean a lot, and that is not just a cliche!
From what I know of you from here and around the corner, it’s just the thing (or one of) that I think you would do selflessly. You’re a dear person!

I did the same with Cloud Atlas. I had to actually research it after I watched it to find out who played who in which section of the film, and then watch it again with greater understanding. Outstanding film.

Heh. When I listen to music, most times I have the AZLyrics page open in a separate window. When I watch films for the first time, I enable subtitles. I used to love reading novels with a dramatis personae at the beginning and a giant glossary at the end.
Yes, we understand each other. 😉

I’m absolutely ignorant about Shakespeare. KJV, sure. That was 1611. English had evolved two hundred years by then. But Shakespeare is that really old stuff. Not too versed (heh) on Chaucer, either. That stuff is as unreadable to me as Welsh.

Yes, listen to lyrics again! It’s rap, and quite complex rap, at that!
Stunning.

I did listen, and you’re right. Have a question for you; the “rap” portions of Moonlight Bay remind me of jazz somehow – the sense of it, the way it jumps in, does it’s own thing, then jumps out again. I’m not explaining myself well, but do you think this is a vocal derivative of jazz – do you call them riffs??
Yeah, I read what I just wrote and think I could be overthinking this. I’m really good at that, lol. I know in drumming circles the various types of percussion instruments interweave and hold the resonant, in-sync beat; doesn’t jazz function the same way?
Anyway, what do you think? Your musical insights are fascinating…
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thank you, Puzz. I wish I could explain better, as well.
I do think Moonlight Bay is jazz, and I do think that the “rapping” they’re doing is part and parcel with Jazz. It all comes back to a root note — even with classical music. But with jazz, and with jam bands that involve improvisation note-wise, sometimes they like to escape that root note for a few bars, and even escape notes themselves, and go into space for a moment — and then BAM they all snap back to the root note and the original groove, and it’s like “…ahh… we’re back on solid ground again.
Aside: Johnny Cash rapped. In several of his songs, his lyrics are spoken, not sung. Same with the artist that did Convoy. And I think Mel Blanc might have been the first rapper. That’s right, an old Jewish white guy was the first rapper. And of course he rapped about money. Because of course he did. Yeah, I said it.

You did a great job dissecting what makes jazz, jazz, Wooly. I never thought of it the way you describe it, but we do seem to both be on the same page with the cross-referencing of jazz and native drumming circles (they function the way jazz does, as you’ve explained it) and the jazz/rap patterns and resonances. Thanks a bunch – you sharing your knowledge has been very helpful.
My grandfather played sax for a touring jazz band – the Iowa Blue Devils – and I have some pictures of them on a stage and all of them hanging out of their “touring bus”. I’m not sure if it was actually a bus or a forerunner of the station wagon, but it was around 1915 or so. Maybe I can figure out how to do some internet magic and share them with you one of these days, as repayment for teaching me another way to look at jazz!

Wooly, thank you. My love of history, especially military history was refined by the Army. Now it’s period history. Matt Bracken former Navy Seal has found a niche in writing his current novels about past operations scenarios.
Just like Tom Clancy. Clancy in the beginning wrote about the old WARSAW pact scenarios. In fact, in the book World War 3, the Soviet invasion of Western Europe, coming though the Fulda Gap, was almost word for word from a operations brief that I gave too the Star crowd that was on tour…….actually the Star crowd was more interested in shopping than listening too doomsday events.
Clancy hung around the local drinking establishments, Crystal City, with the boys and girls from the Pentagon who provide tib-bits of information helping refine his prose……

I don’t remember whether it was the Clinton or the GWB FBI that brought Clancy in for questioning — he knows too much, I guess, for an author of fiction. Apparently the Powers that Be saw things described in his novels that not too many people would have been, or should have been, knowledgeable about.
Again, check out Creveld and Lind’s works. It’s not fiction. More like war-theory and strategy and philosophy.
It’s all over my head, and outside my MOS (as it were). I prefer reading outside and above my expertise. It’s why I like it here at Stella’s Place. Your convos with Czar and ZM and others are an education, and I look forward to them. When I was a kid, I hung out with the grandparents’ generation, and sat and listened, instead of with the other kids, playing in the neighborhood. I really can’t say it did me a whole lot of good (yes I can), but I still prefer to peruse intelligence and experience over stupid fun.

Also mise en place. Very important. I’m no military strategist, nor even a chef, but all those tools in the toolbox should be organized and in easy reach.
When you work on a line, in a restaurant, all your ingredients are arranged just so, in 1/6 pans and 1/3 pans and 1/2 pans (and even 1/9 pans). Everything you need to make everything on the menu is right there in front of you, and organized for proximity and economy of movement. That’s your mise en place. Literally “put in place”.
Every single job in this world requires that philosophy. If I have a guy coming over to do construction work for me, I want to see the inside of his tool trailer first.

Great day in NOLA news…top story Is the new swimming pool in the Desire Projects (now the ‘Desire Neighborhood’) was closed as a group of chirruns were observed by the lifeguard violating pool rules, multiple times, were thrown out. As they left they threatened to return and ‘do harm’, another station referenced ‘gun violence’, and considering the neighborhood the lifeguard called the cops. It’s an interesting public pool, it is fenced in like a zoo and has security…then again.
Next story was the arrest of nine perps charged with multiple armed robberies and carjackings, majority of whom are juveniles. Two more ‘gun violence’ stories followed.
Guess what they all had in unspoken common?

I got home to see the glorious Comey CYA statement I’ve gotten through page 4.
The IC leadership thought it important, for a variety of reasons, to alert the incoming President to the existence of this material, even though it was salacious and unverified
This is so much bullsh*t I can not even find another word to use for it. It is legal BS there are thousands of salacious and unverified materials out there to think an FBI agent must inform an incoming president of one in particular is beneath Comey’s BS skills.
BS
We also agreed I would do it alone to minimize potential embarrassment to the President-Elect.
Say what?
Embarrass President Elect Trump with an outrageous publishing of propaganda?
Sure it was going to be published so what? The left published that Trump raped a 13 year old, that Melania was a call girl, that Trump and Ivanka had an incestuous relationship and yet suddenly this nonsense of Russian hookers and p*ss is paramount?
BS
Then Comey goes on to explain the role of the FBI to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
WHAT!? If these mopes don’t know the role of the FBI then kick them off the committee.
In that context, prior to the January 6 meeting, I discussed with the FBI’s leadership team whether I should be prepared to assure President-Elect Trump that we were not investigating him personally. That was true; we did not have an open counter-intelligence case on him. We agreed I should do so if circumstances warranted. During our one-on-one meeting at Trump Tower, based on President- Elect Trump’s reaction to the briefing and without him directly asking the question, I offered that assurance.
If circumstances warranted?? And it was Trump’s reaction to the briefing that made Comey tell Trump that there was no investigation into him personally?
Good grief! The law is not about how someone feels, it is the duty of the FBI director to assure the incoming president that the cloud of suspicion created around the president elect created in part by Comey himself is a false flag.
I felt compelled to document my first conversation with the President-Elect in a memo. To ensure accuracy, I began to type it on a laptop in an FBI vehicle outside Trump Tower the moment I walked out of the meeting. Creating written records immediately after one-on-one conversations with Mr. Trump was my practice from that point forward. This had not been my practice in the past.
Hmmm…. What was the impetus for your sudden need to “create documents Mr. Comey?
Dinner alone with Trump!!!
My instincts told me that the one-on-one setting, and the pretense that this was our first discussion about my position, meant the dinner was, at least in part, an effort to have me ask for my job and create some sort of patronage relationship. That concerned me greatly, given the FBI’s traditionally independent status in the executive branch.
Again Comey’s feelings have no legal bearing on anything he is directing a disingenuous narrative and it is obvious that Comey is intimidated by President Trump’s not being submissive or afraid of Comey.
And then, because the set-up made me uneasy, I added that I was not “reliable” in the way politicians use that word, but he could always count on me to tell him the truth. I added that I was not on anybody’s side politically and could not be counted on in the traditional political sense, a stance I said was in his best interest as the President.
A few moments later, the President said, “I need loyalty, I expect loyalty.” I didn’t move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed. We simply looked at each other in silence. The conversation then moved on, but he returned to the subject near the end of our dinner.
“Reliable” in the way politicians use the word? Again Comey is testifying to his feelings not matters of fact.
Honest loyalty?!?! guess that depends on what your definition of honest loyalty is. If it doesn’t make sense it didn’t happen. Law 101.
The first four pages in brief.
I thought tomorrow was going to be an interesting game of cat an mouse, Comey exercising his very adept weasel skills, I am now leaning toward tomorrow being a total sh*t show.
I will not even be surprised if Comey’s most common answer is “I will not expand on that any further than I have in my opening statement.”
And every time that long weasel says The FBI Director must always show the public that there is personal and professional distance between himself and the president remember this picture.
Go to hell Comey.

These are sentences taken from the Comey statement. There is obviously stuff in-between but Comey is writing fiction. He knows it.
We also agreed I would do it alone to minimize potential embarrassment to the President-Elect.
This had not been my practice in the past.
It turned out to be just the two of us, seated at a small oval table in the center of the Green Room.
I didn’t move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed.
I stayed in my chair.
The door closed.
The grandfather clock
There is a whole lot of oddness and persuasion going on in Comey’s narative.
He said he had nothing to do with Russia, had not been involved with hookers in Russia, and had always assumed he was being recorded when in Russia.
Just look at what Comey implies, “Why of course I wouldn’t use Russian hookers while I know I’m being recorded James old buddy *wink, wink*
The President returned briefly to the problem of leaks. I then got up and left out the door by the grandfather clock, making my way through the large group of people waiting there, including Mr. Priebus and the Vice President.
So you got up while the President was talking Comey?
President Trump should have the grandfather clock swept for bugs.
Good grief.

the grandfather clock that has a sensitive voice recorder built in…??

No idea why Comey used the grandfather clock so often in his written statement but it was odd.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen

The ‘Independent’ Mr. Comey – His prepared testimony shows why he deserved to be fired.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-independent-mr-comey-1496878266
But far from documenting an abuse of power by President Trump, his prepared statement reveals Mr. Comey’s misunderstanding of law enforcement in a democracy.
When you’re dining alone in the Green Room with an operator like Mr. Comey—calculating, self-protective, one of the more skilled political knife-fighters of modern times—there are better approaches than asserting “I need loyalty, I expect loyalty.” Of course the righteous director was going to “memorialize” (his word) these conversations as political insurance.
Mr. Comey is describing an FBI director who essentially answers to no one.

Remember the Bush-Ashcroft drama?
“Mr. Comey’s testimony about the episode before a Senate committee three years later was the stuff of a Hollywood film, as he described racing to the hospital in an F.B.I. car with sirens blaring to try to get to the attorney general’s room before Mr. Card and Mr. Gonzales.”
““I had just witnessed an effort to take advantage of a very sick man, who did not have the powers of the attorney general because they had been transferred to me.”
Comey transferred those powers to himself.
And the drama continues…
Read that Comey statement this afternoon. So many discrepancies, one in every paragraph, finally quit counting. Comey needs a Hollywood scriptwriter.
A couple three years ago read that Comey said he answers to his own ethical codes; cannot find it now. Comey is honest in that respect, it would seem.
Too much deja vu tonight. Time to quit and chase insomnia. Must be some ufos, aliens, or chupacabras somewhere on late night am radio that need attention.

Hannity said that the statement read like a novel. Perhaps Comey is just a Tom Clancy wannabe?

A few minutes ago, the neighbor girl (the one that I had to rename my nic “Wooly Phlox” over, because reasons) pulled into her spot while I was out smoking a smoke, and some really good country music was playing from her truck. She got out, only after it ended, and I asked her what it was that I was just subjected to.
It was that.
Lotta really strange musical coincidences this week.
