    I hate these alerts on my phone. My daughter showed me how to turn them off, but it didn’t work. Wake me up telling me to take cover now, jump up and it’s nowhere near me, just thunderstorms. It really needs to learn just because there is a tornado warning in my county it doesn’t mean it’s in this part of the county.

      We’re starting to see non-rain events here in Seattle, but I don’t think they’ve started sending pages or SMS messages telling people to get away from the windows and get under the table. BUT THEY SHOULD.

        Used to be my stomping grounds up there, nyet. What kind of non-rain events are you referring to? Are you guys getting hail or wind storms? High wind is so dangerous up there with the shallow rooted pines; adding ice of any significant amount is horrible!

      We were awakened last night at about 2 AM with an ‘amber alert’ for a situation about two hours away. About every two hours after that we were awakened by updates pointing out that the events were still unfolding, but still two hours away. Into the dresser drawer under the winter undies, if someone wants to call me at night they can use the old landline.

        Last year, at my last restaurant, in the summertime, every single phone in the entire restaurant went off, warning us of a tornado five miles away. From a Lake Michigan town where tornados have happened once in 200 years.

        It was Erie. I mean eerie. Heh.

          There were possible tornadoes last night, but not near me as I found out when I turned on the tv to look at the radar. The damage honestly looked to me like wind damage, but they were saying possible tornado damage.
          Only once so far this year has one even came close to us and I had gotten an alert about an hour before but then they canceled it and we were still up when the barometric pressure dropped and the rain was going sideways. We went to the basement, but it picked up about a mile from the house. It thankfully missed everything and the worst it did anywhere near me was uproot a few trees and destroyed a barn.

        They are way over using it this spring. For a week we were under a flood warning and they alerted me to that fact 10 times a day.
        There was an Amber alert a few weeks ago that was 3 hours from me and they wanted to make sure I knew about it and sent the alerts 6 times. Then it ended up being a hoax. a disgruntled family member reported the mother of the children who had custody of them had ran off with them and was on drugs. She was on the news later.

            It looks like they are going to catch all of these killers. I hope they put them away for good…………or let them go into the neighborhood where this child lived. I feel sorry for this mother. However, what intelligent person would leave their child in a running car nowadays, and in that neighborhood . Twenty five years ago, I wouldn’t. And, what was the problem with not telling the police that the child was in the back seat? Seriously. Isn’t that the FIRST thing a mother tells the police when they report the car missing? What was her problem?

                  I was thinking she might be having something like the munchies. As far as killing the kid, it ain’t unusual for thugs to kill witnesses.
                  Years ago I had a good friend who was a detective on a neighboring parish call to say he needed a drink. Seems he was at a particularly bloody home invasion where the entire family was slaughtered. This was before the enhanced ‘home invasion’ laws came in, penalties were far less then. The perps were caught a few days later and, when asked why they killed everyone in the house (kids too) they said it was because they didn’t want any witnesses that could send them to jail. Instead of a plea deal to some breaking and entering type of charge they all ended up with murder charges.

      I certainly know what you mean, michellc – they drive me crazy sometimes too. I used to work for County Emergency Management in Kansas City and might be able to shed some light on the subject of weather alerts.

      Because of the unpredictable nature of severe weather, warnings are only issued to cover whole counties (county-wide level) because it’s not possible to be 100% certain that those mesoscale systems (rotational, convective systems) won’t deviate from a straight path; they very often do. Better to give many the opportunity to seek shelter than cut off the warning at an arbitrary hard line – which could be completely false and end up killing dozens of people. Better to be safe than sorry.

      I had signed up for weather alerts at Wunderground and Accuweather by email but disconnected them today. There were around 20 extraneous emails to deal with after a storm front went through the county missing my location by about 25 miles last night and I unsubscribed. For each of those I got an equivalent alert on my phone; I still let the phone alert me during the night because it tells me there is something going on worth checking into.

      If you are getting alerts from more than one weather alert app on your phone, I’d pick the one I like best and shut off or delete the others that weren’t so good. You will still get alerts, but they won’t go off like church bells on Sunday. I’m sure your daughter would be happy to do it for you if you asked. The younguns these days are generally pretty patient about this stuff cause it makes them smile at us old farts.

        These are from the NWS and apparently there is no way to turn them off, just like the Amber alerts. It’s annoying as heck. They’re loud enough to wake the dead and now if that’s not enough after the tone an annoying woman tells you a tornado warning is in your area to take cover now. It seems to not matter what your volume is set at on your phone they can override it.
        I’ve lived with tornadoes my entire life and have managed just fine without this annoying thing.

      I had to turn my alerts off, too, because I got constant alerts because it included boating advisories over on the coast which go off constantly.

        Apparently somehow they can override you turning them off. It shows on my phone they’re turned off, yet I keep getting them.
        We’re back under a flood warning and a thunderstorm warning and over the past hour it’s went off 8 times.
        As soon as I get off here, I’m turning my phone off for the night.

            I don’t have any weather alert things. Apparently anything associated with the government can decide for you. I had to break down and get a smart phone because of our internet company, it’s the only way to have internet right now.

      This puts my mind at ease about not respecting the late Chris Cornell.

      He was an anti-Christian nihilist. What happened was inevitable.

      I’m not hoping for it, but I would expect that the lead singer (forgot his name) for Rage Against The Machine ended up the same way.

      I don’t respect people, no matter how great their vocal ability, who hate Christ and Christians, and who use their talents to teach others to also hate Christ and Christians.

      And Cornell had lots of devotees. Lead singer for Tool, same, who goes by three names, and God (heh) help you if you call him by only his first and last name like normal people. That guy’s cultists will call you out for not using all three of his names. How dare you? I don’t respect him or his fanatical followers, either. And I don’t really mind insulting them. They wouldn’t mind if I got beaten to death with a brick, or trampled by the ironically-named AntiFa.

      So screw their precious feelings. I’ll treat them kindly, but I will never respect them.

    Small crowds are gathering at the Lee monument in NOLA, city’s put out the word it will remove the last monument starting about 9 AM. Hizzhonuh, Ayatollah Landrieu, will make a formal statement concerning the monuments’ removals shortly thereafter…from his safe place. City will close down one of the busiest intersections in the city for hours, snarling traffic and streetcar routes, but what the hell, Mitch will have his day.
    Initial announced plans are to have the site where the Liberty Place monument was to stay as it is, let the City Park folks decide what they want to do with the site where the Beauregard statue was (interesting as the city told the City Park folks they didn’t own the land and had no say-so in the statue’s removal), install an American flag stand at the Jefferson Davis site and a water feature with public art at the Lee site.
    No word on if the city will rename Lee circle but the Lee statue was offered to washington and Lee University who turned it down as they said they were focusing on Lee’s educational accomplishments post Civil War and didn’t want the statue as he’s wearing his military uniform. City could leave it named Lee Circle to honor his postwar accomplishments. No open suggestions to rename it the Landrieu Family Circle but I’m betting the ideas fulminating out there somewhere.
    By the way, using past city examples, ‘public art’ is stuff from politically connected ‘arteests’ that no one else would buy.

      Thanks for keeping us informed about the Clown Show, czar. I think this whole SJW BS over these monuments to our countries’ history is beyond reprehensible. I know there’s a lot of cronyism and corruption in NOLA and that’s enough to put up with, but the greater picture bodes ill for the future.

      I very much appreciate your posts about this. I’m sure the 9 AM commencement with the traffic tie-ups was a well-conceived plan for as much press time as possible.

        City has to redress the problem of only MLK being prominent enough nationally to have a monument in the city. Perhaps what the city needs is a monument to its rotten school system, once again it ranks 51st (as in lowest) in the US. It used to fight with Mississippi and DC for last place but MS has risen to 46th and DC to 47th….and that’s aftet you taxpayers dumped gazillions of tax dollars into rebuilding the entire school system after Katrina.

      Everyone opposed to the statues needs to start wearing notable-sized earings or necklaces or ties or shirts or hats or bracelets or shoe-lace dangles of the statues! Let them take down the statues but let them not be removed!

            Just how I see it. City has an awful adult functional illiteracy rate, a really scary violent crime rate, some if THE worst schools in the nation, a traditionally black university rated as the worst in the nation, a school dropout rate that’s up there with the best of ’em with a host of other problems too numerous to mention.
            Folks don’t live here or move here for the family-friendly atmosphere, it’s the 24/7 sybaritic lifestyle that draws the hedonists who, through large administrations of booze, drugs and assorted other distractions, swim through a sea of denial.
            If the Rats, progs and assorted political dactiobs gave a rat’s ass about anything involving dragging a huge chunk of the black population into the civilized portion of the 21st century they’d have done so years ago. Lotta rich black and white pols and pol-connected folks post-K but the same group of black residents living an entitlement lifestyle remains…exceot those the b&w pols managed to pawn off on other cities post-K.

        Yeah, saw that on the news. Do I remember Midnight Badketball? We were detailed to ride shotgun on those little disasters all over the city. Main job was to ensure that no shootings/murders occured at them to embarrass the pols ragging about the programs ‘success’. As long as the carnage occurred off the MBB’s territory we were golden.

    Somehow my cat broke in. I let him out an hour ago, and watched him climb down the fire escape that is my front door.

    Minutes ago I went out for a smoke, opened my inside apartment door and he ran inside.

    He also locked the back door behind him. I don’t get it. Now he’s on the bed, yelling at me.

    None of my neighbors came in in that hour. i would have heard them.

    I can only surmise that Tripod has the power of teleportation. Freaked me out.

    A few things today caught my attention today: What was the CIA mail-opening project and isn’t the CIA only authorized (officially) to work outside the US? My memory is better than I thought – I remember South Pacific, and I was 9. The spy system of bugging devices at our embassy in Moscow was an enormous scandal because they turned the Embassy building in Moscow into a giant antenna, broadcasting all our… everything spy, and non-spy and we spent twice as much trying to figure out what went wrong as we spent on the building, according to the NYT.

      Just as the military was ‘prohibited’ from enforcing donestic policies indide of the US. Sounds solid, eh? Well the law was written just aftevthe Civil War and only covered the Army, wasn’t for nearly 100 years that the Air Force was added so legally the AF could do what the Army couldn’t. The Coast Guard, having a dual military/Department of Treasury role, isn’t covered so they can do what the Army and AF can’t….though if an Army or AF intel person is attached to a Coast Guard function….hello grey area. Also the Act was redefined by Fed lawyers post-911 to allow military intel folks working in a civilian, military or joint environment to collect against US ‘persons’ IF that/those person(s) pose a threat to the military.
      Ditto the CIA. They were, in their original charter, it is permitted to act within the US in pursuing acts of terrorism, foreign intelligence and countrt-terrorism…and therein rests the problem: definition of these acts. There are also a myriad of Executive Orders, classified and unclassified, which redefine the Company’s charter and give them added ‘responsibilities’.
      So you can parse the law to justify the interception/openings or just do it on the sly without anyone knowing. There was even a way to read thru some of the envelopes without opening them, not 100% but better than nothing. I psrticularly liked the method of extracting a letter from an envelope using knitting needles, still flavors the way a lot of us seal an envelope.
      It’s all for the greater good, a little bit of tyranny makes the flavor of democracy that much richer.

          I was just lucky enough to live it.
          Most Americans believe that somehow those toads who write law write them so the writers and the writer’s bosses will be constrained by them. Gullibility knows no bounds. Obamacare was one of the few laws Congress passed that actually applied to Congress, normally Congress has to specifically state that the law applies to the Federal agencies and Congress too. E.G, I worked in a Federal agency housed in a building that also had a major Federal cobtractor in it. The building belonged to NASA and was shot through with asbestos. We’d just sweep the dust from the crumbly asbestos insulation off the desk each morning, the fact there was asbestos throughout our portion was moot as we weren’t covered by OSHA asbestos laws. The civilian company right on the other side of out sheetrock wall, who was sharing the ceiling crawlways where the asbestos had been sprayed, was was subject to those laws. It had to call in, on its own dime, a company specially certified in asbestos remediation. Men in spacesuits walked the halls, carefully removing the 60-year old insulation, vacuuming up every trace of dust, right up to the freestanding Sheetrock wall that seperated us, where they stopped.
          It’s the Feds, it’s the clown-car way it all sort of works, it’s all part of that sausage making thing.

    Sometimes I think I’m cursed. I was supposed to be halfway through with the flooring and putting my house back together this weekend. They show up yesterday and start working and I get to looking and they’ve brought the wrong thing and ask if I can live with it. No, I can’t live with it, what they brought is ugly and not what I ordered. It took almost a month for them to get the wrong thing in and now all of my furniture and appliances is either on the porch or in the utility room or in our shop. I can’t cook, sitting on lawn furniture and then they tell me it will be 2.5 to 3 weeks to get it in. I told them that wasn’t going to work and after running around everywhere yesterday found someone who can get something similar in next week. Discovered through him what I had ordered that he could order as well is on backorder until June 3rd.
    The installer was very apologetic, but it wasn’t his fault, he just picked up what they told him to pick up. I have yet to hear anything from the owner, when I called the store he wasn’t in, yet he can talk to his installer on the phone.
    I told his installer if they had called me and said the wrong thing had came in then I could have understood that and wouldn’t be so mad because we would not have moved everything. If they had told me it was on back order then I would have picked out something else, but to show up with something that looks nothing like what I picked out is a piss poor way of doing business.

    Now my fingers are crossed that the other company isn’t going to screw me over as well because with them I had to pay half down.

      I’m not even going to tell you the story of my friend who had her kitchen remodeled just last year. Let’s just say it was months before she had a working stove, it seems in WI the person you contract with has to sub-contract some stuff out do to WI codes.

      She is a laid back cool cookie, they ate out a lot but even she was frustrated. Her husband who is not such a cool cookie took to bringing a chair in the kitchen and sitting next to whoever ever was installing this or that so that it was “up to code.” He asked them what they were doing each step of the way, soon they started working very quickly.

      Prayers for you Michelle that it goes somewhat quickly.

        There’s a reason we usually do everything ourselves, but just didn’t want to install it ourselves and decided to once pay someone to do it. Everything we’ve done except the floors we did ourselves and neither of us wanted to spend days on our knees.

          Makes perfect sense….until you find out the PITA you are paying to give yourself. My friend hadn’t changed anything in the kitchen in 30 years or something like that. She said she will die with it as it is rather than go through it again.

          Every single thing was a drama. They rebuilt the microwave nook too small for the microwave, the electrician was too busy then didn’t show up, they sent the wrong cabinets and counter tops, they made the space for the oven smaller than specified.. and that is just some of it.

          “Do you mean you still want a socket there?” said the mopey electrician.

            I admit I wanted to slap the installer when he asked, “can you just live with it?”
            I told my husband at least they could have sent something similar in color and I might have just thought the sample piece was a little off. Instead they brought something nothing like what I had ordered and it was an ugly color, a really ugly color.

            A friend of mine said they had new carpet installed in their house by Lowes and the day they finally came to install it after several times of them canceling the scheduled install day she had a doctors appointment she couldn’t reschedule. So after all that time she decided to just let them do it, so she let them in and the one with the carpet had not shown up yet. She left and came home, she had ordered a cream carpet and came home to a “sh.t brown” carpet. She immediately called and was given a manager who told her she should have looked at the carpet before they installed it, because now that it was installed they couldn’t remove it. She explained why she didn’t look at the carpet and told them she was going to yank it up herself and dump it in the middle of the store. She was transferred to someone else who told her if she would keep it they would refund her 10% and give her a $100 lowes gift certificate. She told him she hated the carpet and even if they refunded all of her money she did not want to look at it every single day. It took her 2 weeks of fighting with them and finally a call from her attorney to corporate for them to agree to order the carpet she chose, but she still had to deal with the ugly carpet for 3.5 weeks before they showed up. You’d think they would have everything right the second time, but nope she had paid for an upgrade on pad to get the moisture/dust resistant pad and when they pulled up the carpet the pad was not what she had paid for. She insisted they pull it up to and return to the store to get what she paid for. He leaves and comes back with the same pad they had put down the first time and says they said this was what she ordered. So she spent another two hours arguing with the store being transferred from one person to another until she finally got one to look at her order. Then they wanted to come back another day to do it when he had to make another trip to the store and she told them they were going to do it today and she didn’t care if they had to work until midnight.
            I told her I thought I was going to avoid that by going to a small local guy because I’ve heard the horror stories before about Lowes.

              Yep. My friends went local. Good deed, higher price but they are retired have the money and shop local small businesses whenever possible unfortunately they didn’t get what they paid for.

              I know they were in negotiations and were not pong the full price. I don’t know how it ended up being settled.

              On the plus side their kitchen is beautiful.

                I went small, local again, just in a different county. I got on the phone and started calling all of the surrounding towns and asking if it wasn’t in stock how long to get it in and used the guy who gave me the least amount of time.
                It ended up being about the same amount.

        No contract and thankfully I didn’t pay anything in advance. We went in and because it’s a small local place that’s been around forever and I’ve done business with before(although it was buying stuff that was in stock and that we installed) I thought no problem. Picked out what we wanted, owner came out and took measurements and gave me the total price for materials and labor. Told him to order it, even called the next day to confirm he was ordering what we picked because the guy that worked for him had lost the paper.
        I’ve waited patiently not bugging them about when it was going to come in until last week and I called him to ask if he remembered we needed a few days heads up because we were painting, he said it was all in and set up installation this week.
        Later this summer I was planning on buying new flooring for my master bedroom, master bathroom and office, but I won’t be using him now.
        If the other guy does as he says, he will get my business, if he screws me over then I guess I’ll be shopping elsewhere or go buy it and install it ourselves.

        My biggest bitch is not calling and saying they had the wrong thing and of course asking if I could just live with it. That tells me it wasn’t an accident and they thought I wouldn’t notice or hoped I’d let them in and leave and then tell me it was too late they had already installed it.

          Czarina wanted the marble stained-concrete floors when we built. We watched as a squad of men with smoothing machines made the entire slab (thry even got carried away and did the garage) glass/baby butt smooth. Before we could get the stain on the guys who sprayed the foam insulation in the roof came and didn’t cover the gloor, dropped foam stained the concrete and made it unstainable.
          We went looking for alternatives and, after days of searching, accidentally found a store that had ordered hundreds of square feet of special porcelain tile for a mall store. The store folded before it was even completed and we got it for what the store paid wholesale.
          It’s super hard, the tiles are large and match the large open format of the house and the color matched the color we were going to paint. I’ve dropped a cast iron fry pan on it and it didn’t break the tile and it’s textured do it doesn’t readily show dirt.
          Sometimes things work out..other times you get that guy who installed our septic.

            We’ve always been those who have done everything ourselves, while raising our kids it was out of necessity, we couldn’t afford to pay people. Car broke down we had to figure out how to fix it, plumbing stopped up we had to snake it out, wanted new floors we had to do it after shopping at outlet stores for wholesale prices. lol
            Later it was more why pay someone to do something we can do ourselves and know it’s done right or at least to our satisfaction?

            We’re getting older now and things that didn’t make us not be able to get out of bed the next morning, now make us not be able to get out of bed.

              Czarina and I always worked two or three jobs each and, in the nearly 30 years we were together before we retired, I can count the vacations we took together on one hand. In general our vacays were going somewhere for a conference, training or something work connected. We didn’t have kids and that dedication to our work-lives was something we both shared.
              When we retired the location, in general, was mine but we both agreed on it, the house design was hers. Now we have the farm to get us up and moving…more on some days than others…and it’s making the aging process easier to deal with. At 68 Czarina was surprised, nevermind the medical staff, that she could drag herself as far as she did up to andvinto the house with that broken leg. I shudder to think what might have happened in NOLA had she fallen there…especially unarmed.
              We still do a lot of things, inside and out, by ourselves, we ain’t going out easy.

                We never took many vacations either, but it’s because when you have farm animals to tend to you can never really find anyone to trust fully with them. Our vacations were always places we could easily drive to and a maximum of being gone 2 nights.
                My daughter, son-in-law, grandbabies, husband and I went antique shopping today and my daughter was talking about how we used to take day trips and visit small museums, go through caves, etc. and how she never knew why we went to caves because she hated caves. I told her it was because her brothers loved caves. lol Anyway she said how fun it always was and when they were little they thought they had traveled a long ways and always found the trips where we went through 4 states in one day made them think we were magicians. Now she realizes we didn’t really drive that far and it’s easy to travel into Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma in a day.
                Zoos and animal parks were another favorite day trip for them, we were always finding little animal parks to take them through.

                Our very few long vacations, which for us was 3 days and 3 nights she can hardly remember, but those day trips that cost very little is what she remembers the most.
                We did a lot of camping as well, because we could go camping and run home long enough to check on everything and get back in an hour or so.
                We still don’t do many vacations and we still have lots of work to do and neither of us plan on changing now or in the near future. We both plan on doing what we do until we can’t move.

                BTW, my goal today was to find a farmhouse table and I decided I’m just not going to pay what they want and after looking them over they’re pretty simple to build and will be building our own.

                  My brother had a dairy farm, and he never went far away unless it was a family emergency, like when our grandfather died. In that case, his son, daughter, and wife held down the fort along with their hired man.

                    I could never have a dairy because you can only leave for hours. We’ve had a milk cow on and off over the years and although the fresh milk is nice not being able to even go away for a day is kind of a pain.

        This is the first time (the A/C is 17 years old) I’ve needed repair, and it was because of a broken wire! Anyway, I never do the maintenance, so I won’t have to worry about it. They’ll also maintain the furnace (which is only 3 years old) and the humidifier.

          We built a house in 2001 and had two heat pumps put in. When the air conditioner ran, which was most of the time, when it stopped, it was very loud and screechy. I told the builder, the installer, and my husband. They all said it was normal, they all make that noise. It didn’t seem right to me and I kept mentioning it, but nothing was ever really done. Time went by, maybe a year, and our builder was putting an addition onto the house. The air conditioner stopped and there was a very loud screechy noise and a metallic clank, clank, clank and all was quiet. Our builder’s eyes bugged out and all the men ran to the unit. I said that is what I was talking about, only without the clank, clank, clank. The fan had been installed upside down and broke all to pieces and ruined the unit when it failed.

          The company had to send us a new one.

    The NYT claims that President Trump told the rascally Russians that comes was a crazy nut job 😂.

    Glad to hear the president thinks that they are all nutters also. (Not that I believe anything the NYT prints but it is a delightful thought.)

    I almost don’t want to go back in to work tomorrow.

    I didn’t lie when I said I could do Salad Guy’s job (ten or so salads, most easy to prepare, except the wedges — a quarter head of lettuce, drenched with bleu cheese in a nice bowl, off to the side, sprinkled liberally with diced bacon and bleu crumbles, with julienned red onion, halved cherry tomatoes, and half a sliced egg, and steak or chicken or blackened salmon — labor intensive, on a busy night, and also very popular. It’s a salad, yes. After the customer uses their steak knife and fork to put all the artfully-arranged ingredients together and toss them. If I saw it, I’d be like “you call this a salad?”), and dish and prep at the same time.

    I was being arrogant and naive.

    Tonight I got swamped with four tickets at once, with various salads on them that are on the menu, but with special instructions on each of them… no onion, dressing on the side, no salt on the chicken for the entree salad. This was my second day reading tickets in a restaurant.

    I can, and will create a system. I haven’t yet, but It’s what I do. BUT I cannot learn to read multiple tickets and to create a system with a 19 year old sperg standing next to me and speaking and mumbling inanities and outright weirdness into my, and everyone else’s, ear. And thus, a wrench into my works.

    He’s a good worker, all in all, but most of his mind is elsewhere, and not in the business, and he has no throttle on his voice. He’s like Beavis and Butthead most times.

    Today was his second day. He is really good at keeping the place clean, though, when it’s slow.

    I can’t fully explain how he locks up my brain when I’m attempting to focus, because I have to.

    He doesn’t have that urgency. Not many hires do.

      I have trouble understanding what somebody is saying if the TV is on loud, or somebody else is speaking loudly. It’s as if I hear everything and it all gets jumbled all together.
