Did you ask your husband if he knew Dr Isaacson or his wife Babs? They went to Temple Sinai.
LikeLiked by 1 person
No, he doesn’t know them. He was only a kid, and he went to Beth Israel and then onto a yeshiva in Baltimore. Did you know the Gutmans or the Nelkins?
LikeLike
No, the Issacsons were our primary Jewish friends here though we had a few other contacts. Jewish community here’s a bit insular. Czarina had more contacts through her organizations. I didn’t have anything but Catholics, Baptists and a slug of heathens in my military unit, my primary contacts. Our off-time largely consisted of shrimping, gathering oysters or hunting hogs and rabbits sort of limited association with the Judeo side of the group.

My husband’s family emigrated in 1974. He says it consisted of three and a half Jews, where he was the half. He turned 11 already in New Orleans. I think the age gap also makes a difference as to who hangs out in which circles.

I have heard about the southern tradition of a bonfire along the levy…. I always wanted one. Nice!

We used to ho to them while they were still more of a local thing but as they became more popular they’ve been touristized and bureaucratized. There once was even acdiner cruise that left NOLA and went up river for the fires, haven’t heard about that in years.
The people there have been doing this for centuries, they used to run for miles down the levees, now its more limited but still quite interesting. They used to be just pyramidal piles built by individual families/groups but in recent years have become inventive. We saw riverboats and houses builtbout of logs, this year there was a bulldozer built out of wood and logs. There are still a lot of ptramids and cribs but local bureaucrats who don’t build are limiting sizes, locations, stopping folks from putting fireworks inside the structures…those who can build, those who can’t regulate.
It would be over 150 miles one way now and the crowds are terrible so since we have the land and the wood we’re just gonna build our own, sit back with a drink and a gnosh and shop locally.

We won’t do ours on the levee, we’ll use a part of the front yard. Important thing isn’t where but with whom. We just put the chairs out about 25 feet away, to start, cats get up on the tractor about the same distance away, and dogs get underfoot. A nice drink,or two and viola, holiday spirit.
Yes, we have two cats who love to come over, sit by and watch fires.

Ting off some big fireworks across the lake, about 300 yards away. GGS was lying on a blanket on the floor watching TV and the old Border Collie ran over and threw herself on him. She’s now huddled right next to him, got him pinned by the couch, putting herself between him and whatever that noise is. Cat’s sitting on the table cleaning its naughty bits.

Market Common had a huge fireworks display… as I said, it was amazing right from my porch. I took my sweet old dog out (we are far enough away so the noise was not that bad) and she had the funniest expression. I know she saw it… but she just whimpered and gave me kisses.

Yeah, generally Daisy doesn’t react to gunfire or fireworks. This was the first year for the big puppy and fireworks so his barking may have upset Daisy a bit. We still have to big bags of fireworks, one leftover from last year, so if we get a break that continues after dark we’ll go for it. We’ll take the pup,out so he has enough room to run off the nervous excitement.

I lòst a big chunk of my hearing to gunfire in the military – for most of my career they never used ear plugs. As our dog’s hearing is so much more attuned than mine and I need their ears to augment mine I don’t have them outside when I’m shooting.
They’ve become so ‘inured to home life’ that I can’t even get them interested in game I brought home until it’s cooked, prepared for service and delivered. Only way the’ll go hunting/shooting anyway is if it includes a stop at the BK.

I’ve sometimes wondered if the bottles are worth more than what’s in them.
And who makes them. Italy’s known for glass, I suppose.
The Mortlach bottles (and cases) are astounding. Same with the Bunny’s.
The liquor store in my town is one of the best in SW MI.
The bottles I’ve seen… man.
Put it this way: if you took all that 40-Year Bunny and poured it into a couple of mason jars, which would be worth more? The jars of Bunny? Or the bottle and case?

Some distilleries sell the same product to other bottlers to label as the bottles brand. Some of the very expensive scotch is sold under a generic label at a quarter the price of the distiller’s name.
In answer to your question; It’s more the brand name than either the bottle or contents.

Good morning everybody, and Happy New Year!
I went to bed early last night, so I missed the party. The sun is shining here this morning, and we are promised a Spring-like day, so January 1 is better than average!
As Tennyson said,
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
And I always love to hear this, so sentimental:
The person who originally posted this video several years ago wrote last night:
Update Dec 31 2016: – I posted this exactly 5 year ago today and from your comments I now know why this song has lasted over 200 years. It’s about connection with others. The kind that binds you to someone forever: loyalty, friendship, kindness, love; Even though that person might not be with you anymore. It’s about the human spirit’s ability to hope for the future while enduring rough times by remembering these precious human attributes.
Each year sees many suffer from both naturally created and man-made hardships. But with each there were others willing to step in and attempt to relieve some of that hardship, exercising the best of the human spirit.
Thank you for your comments and all the well wishes and blessings you have sent to me over these past 5 years.
As we ring in the new year remember to take a cup of kindness for the days of auld lang syne.
I couldn’t say it better than he did.

That brought tears tae me eyes, so it did! They still talk like that where we lived in Fife. It took a while, but I picked it up pretty quick. It is English, just their dialect. You can actually tell what part of Scotland someone is from just by the accent! England is the same way, as is our dear America.

Duck has a stronger flavor, goose is closer to dark meat on turkey. If you want to experiment, you can save the goose fat since it’s what was traditionally used to make pastries in Western Europe for centuries.

Happy New Year, Stellars! I had a beer last night, and not 12.
Cuttin’ down. Lot’s of D.T.s. Not really all that fun. All my bedclothes are in the washer/dryer. Lots of sweating, tossing, turning. Shaking, moaning. When you get out of bed 15 times in 12 hours to drink water and stretch various insane leg cramps, it’s not a fun night. Hey, at least there’s no bugs and such that I’ve heard about.
I pretty much read the whole internet yesterday. Went to bed at 8PM. Got up (for real) at 9AM.
Then read the whole internet again.

I’m making an appointment tomorrow with my doc regarding “something for that”, and assorted dietary advice.
“Meetings”?
This is as close as I’m likely to get to those.
LikeLiked by 3 people
I’m not one to push meetings, I’m under the belief that they work for some people but are as big a danger psychologically as they are a benefit in keeping some people dry. I know people who have had success with the program and people who drank themselves to death in spite of the program.
Meetings are a place for people to find a new community away from their drinking “family” the danger in there lies often the lunatics are running the asylum. AA Meetings could be in the psych dictionary next to peer sabotage. Too many people feeding the “I was one month sober so I went out and got drunk to celebrate!” You can substitute one month with any milestone.
12 steps and the 13th used to be “And he died sober” now being thirteenth stepped is finding to put it in AA terms a F* Buddy. That means a fellow sober friend willing to be a sex partner with no strings attached.
My final time I sen someone to a meeting was when a young girl with a lot of baggage other than her sobriety came to me crying. She told her story no small feat in a room of strangers and she was subjected to 45 minutes of “Super happy sober people” talking about how they just knew that god had their picture on his refrigerator because he just loved them so much 🙄.
Then of course there is the sticky situation of AA encouraging people to consider “Fred the pencil” their greater power.
That said, I do encourage a circle of sober friends or people or activities that will occupy your time and mind.
The magic is between your ears, your heart and soul and your desire to to stop slowing killing the body God gave you.
You can think or over think your way into anything, matters like this require prayer and a whole lot of physical and emotional work on your side, God doesn’t deny any man his free will so remind Him that you need His grace to get yours back and do the painful scary legwork to match the grace.
You can do it.
I just lost a young kid back to Satan’s lake, 24 year old young man who decided the bottle was more appealing than his child, his girl, his job and his freedom. He had a choice, you have a choice, you are more powerful through Christ than any bottle.
Prayers for you sweet Wooly 🙏🏼. Rethink, relearn, re-love yourself.
And as I mentioned to you a while back, the world is not yours to fix, Christ came and we killed him, in his humanity even He accepted His limits. We do what we can one good deed at a time the rest will have to wait until the days of Glory regardless of how sickening it is and how hard we want to change the world.

You’re lovely.
A few people around me push meetings. There’s two in town. One A.A., which I’ve studied, long ago, as in depth as I’ve studied other branches of religion, like JW’s and Joe Smith’s folks. Which is quite deep. I don’t dig The Book.
The other a sales subsidiary of Zondervan Corp. and the Christian Music Industry.
Yeah, I’m good.
Already got one. KJV, m’fers. One in each hand. I hold them sideways, and smile disarmingly. With my pants up, and belt buckled. I like to be different.
At 46, pushing 50, I’m not really into meetings, either. Been there, many times, many hospitals. But not for more than 25 years.
Later in life, since I like to read the whole library, and then the whole internet, I learned (from IBD or WSJ, probably) that “meetings” should never involve more than three people, lest they devolve into absolute chaos, and nothing’s resolved. I had already learned this, of course — not just from psych wards, but from many useless 20+ person business meetings too — but this was the first time it was explained to me succinctly.
But it’s true.

You have to do what works for you.
Part of the myth of AA’s “phenomenal” success is that those who work it stay sober. Well, those who work anything generally succeed, they don’t talk about all the people who come and go and fail. I watched a man work the program and he was sober something like 20 years, a very sweet guy he had a daughter who was in and out of the program and died from alcoholism at the age of 27, her teeth were nubs because of all the sugar in alcohol, she was pretty enough to have been a model if her path was a different one, but the program didn’t work for her or as AA would say “she didn’t work the program.”
OK good and grand, but why didn’t she work the program? Life is and troubles and neurotransmitter misfirings and corruptions are deeper the any one answer. One size will never fit all.
If you’ve read a lot about Bill W and Bob S you know their demons didn’t go away, particularly Bill W struggled.
I do think that being with other people who have walked in your shoes is important. No one understands the power of what’s inside the bottle as someone else who has been trapped by it.
All that said many people get sober and stay sober, it is a physical disease, some people are heavy drinkers their whole life and never become alcoholics some folks are hooked from the first drink.
As Impeach says, you can meet us here 🙂 but ya’ need to have someone on the ground with you for some moments.

Best of luck (and a prayer or two). Quitting something you don’t really want to quit is hard, especially when you take the side effects into account. That’s how I felt when I quit smoking. I loved smoking, and was a 3+ pack a day chain smoker. But I did it. It was the most difficult thing I ever did, but filled me with a big sense of accomplishment.

I found that stopping a habit is more of a mental game played by ones self once the physical withdrawals subside. Just reducing consumption did nothing but drag the process out longer than it needed to be. Even after more than a year, I would have cravings if I mistakenly associate the former habit with a pleasant memory. Doing anything that had formerly been followed with the habit took several times before the association was broken. Going to the store daily and bringing bags home caused a strong desire to smoke that took a few weeks to break the association.
Funny enough, since I stopped drinking a couple of months before stopping smoking, I expect that if/when I ever have an adult beverage again like scotch or wine, I will be hit with the desire to smoke since I have never broken the association.
LikeLiked by 5 people
Agree about the reduction of consumption – at least with smoking, it makes it more difficult to accept the inevitable – life without cigarettes. Also agree about associations. It took me more than a year to pass the point where I still was open to smoking.
LikeLiked by 4 people
I also found that the anxiety was less if I still had cigarettes on hand. If I smoked all my cigarettes, I found myself not ready to quit on that exact one and would end up buying another pack. The Mrs. played that little game with herself for years. She would get angry if I bought her a carton, but would demand only one pack since she was trying to quit. She smoked about two and a half packs a day so I would hide the others until she said I needed to go to the store for her. 🙂

When I got serious (my sister had just died of emphysema 3 days earlier), I called my daughter at home and told her to destroy the cigarettes I had on hand. I never smoked another cigarette again.

A goose is basically a duck with a longer neck, a swan is a goose with a longer neck…and an attitude.
I love goose but it’s a pain to cook for what meat you get off of it. And the Canadians (geese, not tourists) in the lake give me dirty looks.

Accompanying drink should compliment the food, not compete. If it tasted good, viola, winnnnnnerrrrrrrr.

Yes,,, and the funny thing is, I thought the goose had a slight nutty flavor, not gamey, so the liqueur was a wonderful follow up. 🙂

Geese (and other ‘game’) get that gamey taste from scavenged dtuff they pick up eating at nature’s buffet. If you cook wild geese up andbout of its fat it’s less slidey and less gamey tasting.
Commercial geese are fed something like Purina goose chow, they get a commercial diet that gives them the more bland taste of commercial fowl. Still get greasy though, I know more than one person who’s cooked one stuffed and flat in a pan…gotta slimy surprise.
LikeLiked by 1 person
This was a commercial goose. Definitely. I like the meaty flavor, different from anything I have had, and not gamey, to my way of thinking. Never had a wild goose, or duck.. Dh has treated me to wild rabbit and squirrel. Not often, thankfully.

I have a rack that fits in the turkey roaster that lets me cook the goose out of its own fat. I also stuff the body cavity with apples and baste with unfiltered apple juice. Note: red delicious is NOT an apple – it looks like one but I have no idea what it really is.

It’s all advertising…I use Fuji or another I know to be sweet. I’m known to the produce manager at Wally World to open a bag of apples to sniff them…no scent, no buy. I find usually the smaller cheaper apples that are bagged are justvas good as cooking apples as their larger more expensive selves.

I bought one of those racks for Thanksgiving. It worked just right for the goose…. I didn’t bother stuffing it though… It was really good. We have enough leftover for dinner. I said that if I can ever catch it on sale we would have another one.

Look on Craigslist for a farmer selling one dressed, seasonally they are a niche bird and expensive. Note: be careful of what section on Craiglist you consider buying a goose from.

Sometimes your local store can special order but don’t expect it to be cheap. When we go into NOLA there’s a big bix Asian store thst dies its own ducks and, for the money, I find that superior to geese.

It’s not just New Years. When I lived in the U.K. it was every Fri-Sat night! Lots of young Brits get a few down while preparing to go out., because the price of drinks in a club isn’t affordable for a lot of young people. They get wasted. It seems to be a British thing, because lots of European vacation spots always complain about the rowdy drunken Brits.
I used to marvel at the girls in very short skirts, very high heels, and no pantyhose out roaming the streets drunk. They also wore no sweater or jacket, and it would be freezing!
The guys would have more clothes on, but would get into drunken brawls with their best friends.
My hubby and I were members of “The Conservative Club” I used to marvel at the elderly turning up the drinks after a Sunday afternoon bowls game on the lawn. I had never seen older folk drink before in my life!
It all opened my eyes to a new way of life that I never knew existed, lol.
