When I lived over there a group of us had a Karmann Ghia with a Corvairbengine in it. Made it a two-seater as the engine really ate up the back seat butnitbdid move. The Crown installation kit required the engine rotate, in the VW, opposite of what it did in the Chevy. Joke was it only got younger the more we ran it. Did eat the dickens out of our gas ration coupons but it was worth it burning up the autobahn.

I can remember in the early 60s that if you bought gas at a German gas station it was horribly expensive, hence the proliferation of small-engined cars there. On-base we were paying about a dime a gallon.

You are correct. Even as I seek out new music, I would never throw out the old.
Neville is top notch. Not a day goes by when I don’t put either Ella, Billie, Etta, Nat, Bill Withers, or Aretha on my Pandora playlist. Most of my playlists on Pandora contain 4 seeds: two contemporary, and two before my time.
So I might have one that looks like this: Ella Fitzgerald, MGMT, Mumford and Sons, Willie Nelson. What Pandora will do is play 4 songs based on each seed, then randomly switch to a new seed. Another day I might have: Bon Jovi, Bill Withers, Chris Stapleton, Stevie Wonder.
I’ll listen to your spins today.

Yup, one of our NOLA music families. You have to hear the entire Neville family together to get a real treat. Charmaine Neville came to our facility in NOLA a few years back to perform for a United Way program. Just as with the Joan Baez concert I posted about a while back Charmaine got separated from her backup and carried the entire performance a cappella.

I was dicing up a whole lotta bread for croutons the other day with one of our Cozzini chef knives, and for the first time in my life, the blade literally broke, where the tang goes into the handle, and the blade, with which you could shave, went spinning.
The back side of the blade hit my arm, and I was left holding the handle. Shook me for a minute. I shook my head, said something along the lines of “WTF”, and grabbed another one off the magnet.

I like these. I bought a set (big chef knife, small chef knife, boning knife, paring knife) 40 years ago and use them daily, except for the paring knife, which my former wife lost.
Gave a set as a wedding gift, but they only lasted a couple years because the bride always put them in the dishwasher and the wooden handles disintegrated, so she threw them away. Being full tang, it would have been fairly trivial to put new handles of dishwasher safe material on them.
They have a thinner spine than most knives, and so slide through hard veggies like potatoes very easily.

I have an Oster Regency Kitchen Machine from 1958 used often, but might get recalled for older folks due to weight of system potential back strain hazards and malicious treatment of cake mixes requiring more than one egg. My hand held potato peeler, however, from Dollar General, is easily guilty of potential laceration hazards when used carelessly on Idaho White Potatoes.

Along those lines…while I was at the Asian big-box store ladt week I bought a 2-pound, 18-inch long Thai food processor. It’s a 1/4-inch thick, hand-‘crafted’ cleaver knife shaped like a clip-point hunting knife. I’m sure, given my familiarity with the genre, it was a leaf spring on a truck or bus not long before its rebirth.
It’s carbon steel, not rust-free, will need me to wrap the handle in steel wire at some point, and is sharper (when correctly stropped) than about anything you’ll find in a regular store. This ‘food processor’ will be seperating hogs and deer into bite sized pieces in short order, no failing parts and no factory recalls.

These look like giant, thick hunting knives and as each is an ‘original’ creation no two are alike…all freehanded. They have the weight and will work well as a butchering cleaver.
Feel ya on the stainless thing, and most sre a crappy grade of stainless. I have one that takes on the edge of a breadknife when you try and sharpen it. I leave it ‘ax sharp’ and hammer it through lighter bone cuts…when it finally breaks it’s history.

“There was painting before Jackson Pollock, and there’s painting after Jackson Pollock,” said Gavin Delahunty, curator of a new exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art, titled “Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots” (through March 20, 2016). It features more than 70 works by the American abstract expressionist artist, including some of his best-known paintings. New Orleans Sewer and Water Board just had a small group of employees arrested for stealing 34,000 pounds of brass over about theee years, most of it new/spare parts. Sewer Board didn’t discover it, the city’s IG did using ‘computer analytics’, saying no informants were used. I’ll bet.
These are the guys we usually refer to as ‘shovel leaners’, it not being unusual to see six guys standing around a hole, two digging and four watching. The announcement of these arrests gives comfort to city leaders who can point to this to show they are not totally inert.

I used to drive for a living. 250 miles a day in a Geo Metro.
I also used to have road rage. I wouldn’t hesitate to hold my middle finger out the window, calmly, for miles.
One day I did that. It was the last time I ever did that.
A truckload of Latinos with no shirts and lots of tattoos cut me off on the S-Curve in Grand Rapids. I did my calm middle finger thing (in a Geo Metro… picture it.)
These dudes were, at 65 MPH, leaning out of the truck at me like Large Marge in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. Beating their heavily-tattooed chests and screaming, “You wanna piece of me?”
Then another truck-full-o-dreamers appeared on my right, also acting like Mad Max extras.
I put on my left blinker. Went left. First guy had got in front of me. He went left, slowing me. Put on my right blinker. Went right. He did the same, again. Put on my left blinker, BUT WENT RIGHT AND GOT UP ON THE EXIT RAMP.
I’ve never flipped anyone off in traffic since. That was almost 20 years ago.

I watched a guy in a tiny jap car come off the freeway to a red light at the access road, followed closely by a large cement truck also coming off at exit speed….the guy tromps his brakes for the red light and the cement truck hits his horn….dumb guy opens his door and waves an aluminum ball bat at the cement truck driver…who slowly moves the truck forward and forward and forward….the dude gets the message and peels off to the right out of the path of thousands of pounds of wet cement and the mixer truck. some folks don’t see the path of their own destruction headed at them….Live and Learn….Die and Forget it All.

Louisiana once again has managed to push its way to the title of ‘nation’s worst school system’ https://wallethub.com/edu/states-with-the-best-schools/5335/. It out-crappyed even Mississippi and DC!
Noon news is touting a new multi-million dollar state of the art high school in a neighboring parish, being worst in the nation’s getting more expensive every year.

And, sadly, let’s not forget the parent’s part in this.

that WOULD be correct…but I have to consider…WHAT PARENTS?…..egg and sperm donors who are still immature irresponsible large kids themselves….for generations now, kids have not had parenting…and the schools cannot make up for that lack….one time, the churches helped, but only if the parents went and took the kids too, and the kids did church events with adult Christian advisors along.

Almost forgot the centerpiece, the new multimedia stage for the school’s performing arts program. The nation that led huminty to the moon and space beyond will now be at the forefront of providing entertainers for the world.

Have a LOT of experience with the Theatre Arts in High School in Texas….UIL One Act play especially.
With the current DEMOGRAPHIC make up of the student body having 8% white and 42% black and the rest Hispanic who do not go in for theatre at all. Most popular play seems to be one with an ALL BLACK CAST. And a REAL FINE MESSAGE FOR THE KIDS.
Fences, by August Wlison, is a play that portrays the many roles of an African-American family that lives during a difficult period of time.
In Fences, Troy alienates those around him. He throws his son out of the house, cheats on his wife, and commits his brother Gabe to a mental institution. In the end, Troy dies, and his brother forgives him.
Troy, the son of a poor sharecropper, moved up north in his youth and struggled to build a new life for himself. He started stealing, went to prison, learned how to play baseball, and then joined the Negro Leagues.
When the play begins, Troy is in his fifties and works as a garbageman. He starts building fences between himself and the other characters: his wife, his son, his brother, his friends.
Despite the fact that Troy committed Gabe to a mental institution to steal his government relief checks, Gabe forgives him and dances at his funeral so Troy will go to heaven.

Above it was mentioned that America is about to be the world’s biggest producer of entertainers.
Wasn’t that always the case?
And we can thank Jews. Yeah, excuse me while I whip that out.
Go back to the Perlman video I linked above.
Why are the Jews the kings of comedy?
Why does joy itself just flow through them?

In and out here, cleaning out partnof the garage. Just ran across a shelf with about a dozen metal self-setting mouse/rat traps, they were toured as THE ultimate rodent removel mavhines, set and forget, garrrrreteeeeed to efficiently and quickly rid the mouse and rat population from feed area of My garage. Wonder if they’d appreciate the irony of their being covered in mouse and rat droppings?
Replaced them all with one full time and two part time cats, problem solved.

I have a warehouse which has virtually no human visitation mostly. Went in a few months ago and a very large snake was hanging down over the light switch at the front door…I nearly dumped my britches and backed out to find a large stick to instruct him to move on…went to feed store to find out how to get rid of snakes….they said….get a cat…cat will eat the mice…snake will have no food…snake will leave….do not feed cat so he will stay hungry to get all the mice.

Mike Judge’s film, Idiocracy, in one photo.
It would be the height of irony if he were actually watching that.

I tried to watch the film, made twenty years ago, and made it about 20 minutes in. Not because it’s a stupid movie, but because it’s so spot-on.
Even Mike Judge says he never wanted it to be prophetic.
It’s a sci-fi comedy movie. More prophetic than Orwell. Darker than Kafka.

Wreaths Across America convoy with police escort traveling thru CT yesterday on their journey to Arlington to deliver the wreaths from Maine. Morrill and Karen Worcester are amazing and generous souls that have honored the Veterans in this manner for over 20 years.
The ceremony is this Saturday 12/17 at noon please stop by Arlington or to your local participating Veterans’ cemetery for the service and to lay a wreath in a veterans honor.

And if the cemetery’s a Federal one or one in a progressive state don’t try to set any kind of a Confederate flag on a Confederate soldier’s grave. That includes a Mississippi state flag on a Mississippi veteran’s grave from any war.

I call every woman ma’am. Can’t help it.
This 25 year-young friend of mine told me last week, “It makes me feel old when you call me that.”
I said, “You listen to Country music, right? Every one of those male Country singers would also call you ‘ma’am’. Guaranteed. Would it make you feel ‘old’ if Eric Church, Chris Stapleton, or even Garth Brooks called you ‘ma’am’?”
