Remember that movie Under the Tuscan Sun? For the next couple of years I made quite good money doing “Tuscan” faux finishes for ladies. And since I prefer texture to doing any other finish, I had a lot of fun doing it too.

I’ve got one wall in the den that is screwed up (sloppy texturing) – any hints on how to fix it?? If the sun gets just right I’ll take a picture of it to show ya – it’s right under a skylight and glaringly obvious. Of.Course.

You only really have two choices. Trowel on mud to smooth is out, which is hard, will take many stages and sanding, and is a huge mess. Or practice a trowel on basic texture and fix it.

I tried to find a YouTube video for you of an easy on but can’t get the danged things to play. I really have got to replace my router soon. Anyhow, I will look and let you know. You use sheet rock mud and a trowel. My favorite for most techniques is not the kind the sheet rock finishers use, it’s more like the kind you find in paint departments and it has rounded edges so you don’t get the edge marks.

You can go to Lowes or the Depot and get a couple of pieces of sheet rock pre cut into 2×2 squares to practice on. If the whole room was done I wouldn’t advise you to try because the corners are what is really hard to do. With a little practice you could trowel on a better finish, perhaps even using part of the old texture and just applying new to even it out. Then when it’s dry you very lightly sand it to knock of protrusions, prime and paint.

I’ll get back to you with some videos. It’s actually quite fun to do, and cheap too.

Observe – (I darkened it a bit to show contrast) there’s a rectangular “ditch” on the left and just a drop-the-damtrowel screwup on the right.

Wee, this looks like some type of rolled on finish to me, not very textured. Is it possible it was something like a box of Homax added to paint?

Just trying to judge from your picture, I’m pretty sure there is no way to fix only one area. Why don’t you email me some bug pictures? How big is the wall?

The colonel suggested having a crew come in and re-do the wall, which is an option, but around here you can’t get sheet rock finishers for a little job like that. I think your best bet is to try to learn how to skip trowel on top of that.

Small wall, thank God – and nowhere near a corner. BTW – after your videos today I looked at a couple more and I think it’s rolled on, too. Rotten bastages, you won’t BELIEVE the crap I’m finding (wrong) in this house…….

Take a look at this video. There are more you can watch. I don’t use a trowel as big as his, but I like rounded edge trowels. The most important thing you can learn is that you do not work in one direction or you will have a big patchwork quilt wall. You change the angle of the trowel and skip around. For some reason this guy doesn’t get near the ceiling either. I texture right up to the ceiling and the baseboard. You want high and low spots, kind of a “brocade” look is another word used. Once you knock it down, very lightly sand, and then get it painted, it looks really good. I almost always do a contrast faux on top, but just using paint will make it look good too.

Take a look on youtube for knockdown texture. If you don’t have to do corners it’s not too hard to learn.

Seattle City Light takes feedback on opt-out for smart meters
    http://komonews.com/news/local/city-light-takes-feedback-on-opt-out-for-smart-meters

SEATTLE — City Light customers only have a few more days to comment on an opt-out policy as the utility converts to advanced meters.

The conversion takes place in the coming year, and a spokesperson for City Light said it will help put customers in control.

“We’re going to put more information in our customers’ hands so they can monitor on a daily basis, or as often as they want, what their energy consumption is and what that’s costing them,” said Scott Thomsen with Seattle City Light.

However, not everyone sees the benefits of so-called smart meters.

“What’s really at risk here is your basic fundamental rights of privacy in your own home,” said Josh del Sol, who directed a documentary called “Take Back Your Power” that points to a long list of concerns.

The film cites health complications and sudden fires – as well as privacy issues – if smart meters are capable of tracking customers’ habits at home and when they come and go.

City Light offers assurances that won’t be the case.

“It’s going to be fully encrypted,” Thomsen said. “It goes to City Light. We protect our customer’s information and we don’t share it with anybody else.”

For those uncomfortable with the technology, City Light is offering an opt-out so long as customers pay an extra $15.47 with each bill.

“They are actually wanting to charge an opt out fee for something that essentially violates your rights,” del Sol said.

City Light is accepting feedback on its draft opt-out plan through the close of business on Monday, August 15. Del Sol said he will make his documentary available to view for free through the weekend.

About halfway through the documentary they start blaming corporations and saying corporations are trying to take over the governments of the world. So if you ignore that one thing, the rest of the information is valid.

Reminds me of Target giving a discount on purchases if you pre-register your debit card and bank infor (and this was after the big security breech). I noticed the customer in front of me was getting a auto discount and asked for the same. Nope, I was paying cash and in order to get it, I had to give the info on an application. I was confused and asked, “You mean apply for a Target credit card?” No, it was to be a preferred member and always get something like 5% on all purchases when use your debit card. Here I was paying cash and had to pay more to do so. I said to the cashier that the discount is not FREE as it really is price Target pays for me selling my bank information.

Very good piece by Daniel Greenfield:
    sultanknish.blogspot.com/2016/08/moderates-and-radicals-in-islam-and-left.html

On those occasions when I follow and actually understand Greenfield, I feel really smart.

The distinction between moderates and radicals is at the heart of the debate about Islamic terrorism. Much as it used to be at the heart of the debate about Communism and its fellow travelers. Everyone will concede that there are indeed radicals, if only ISIS and Stalin. What they will deny is the extent of the complicity and, more significantly, the fact that the radicals were pursuing the same ends as the moderates, an Islamic Caliphate or a Communist dictatorship, only more rapidly and ruthlessly.

The thing that must be understood is that moderates do not disavow radicals. Rather they bridge the gap between the radicals and the larger society, justifying their ends, and eventually their means, while pretending to disavow them. Radicals reject any dialogue. Moderates emphasize dialogue.

Moderates will verbally reject the means with which an end is pursued. Accordingly they will reject terrorism. They may even claim to reject the ends, such as an ideological dictatorship, but they will, in good fellowship, ask you to accept their premise which inevitably leads to the acceptance of both the ends and the means.

For example, moderates on the left and in Islam will ask you to accept that terrorism is caused by American foreign policy. Once you have accepted this premise, then you have partially justified terrorism and paved the way for accepting an “Arab Spring” that eliminates the consequences of American foreign policy by properly Arabizing and Islamizing the governments of the region.

The whole article is good, and fairly short, for Greenfield.

I’ve been on my knees, in the muck and mire, the stench in my nostrils. I’ll stand.

Unbeatable forces force me again down, but again I stand. Pain hurts, but despair kills. I’ll stand.

Do you think yourself alone, a minority of one? Still stand. One is enough, when one is all that there is. Stand.

To stand is to make a target of yourself. Stand.

You will not win. You are doomed to fail. Stand.

Better men than you have died standing, but all men must die. Stand. Do you not wish to be counted among the better men? Then stand.

Better to live a slave than die a freeman? If you ask the question, you cannot comprehend the answer. Stand.

Today is not the day? When, then? Are you so comfortable? Do your knees not ache? Man was not built to kneel, but to stand. So stand.

You were given a priceless gift, the gift of life. Do not waste it. Stand.

They will mock as you fall. All men must fall. It is a shorter fall from your knees. But fall from your feet, so as to make a resounding echo. Stand.

You can live on your knees. You will die on your feet. Choose for yourself; I will not judge. But as for me, I’ll stand.
