    So far so good, except for the interruptions by protesters (wonder who let them in). Obviously a closely scripted speech, which is appropriate for this venue.

    When I attended a DEC meeting like this one, the thing that amazed me was how quickly lunch could be served to 2,000 people. For the life of me, I can’t remember who was speaking – might have been Ross Perot (yes, it was that long ago).

    We will build the next generation of roads, bridges, railways, tunnels, sea ports and airports that our country deserves. American cars will travel the roads, American planes will connect our cities, and American ships will patrol the seas.

    American steel will send new skyscrapers soaring.

    We will put new American metal into the spine of this nation.

    It will be American hands that rebuild this country, and it will be American energy – mined from American sources – that powers this country.

    It will be American workers who are hired to do the job.

    Americanism, not globalism, will be our new credo. Our country will reach amazing new heights.
    All we have to do is stop relying on the tired voices of the past.We can’t fix a rigged system by relying on the people who rigged it in the first place. We can’t solve our problems by relying on the politicians who created them. Only by changing to new leadership, and new solutions, will we get new results.

    From his speech:

    “My plan will reduce the current number of brackets from 7 to 3, and dramatically streamline the process. We will work with House Republicans on this plan, using the same brackets they have proposed: 12, 25 and 33 percent.”

    Brackets are only part of the explanation. Anyone know what the incomes are to go along with those brackets? For example, going by the 2016 tax rates, the top 4 of the 7 tax brackets are for income most of us would probably see as pretty good income:

    28% on married-filing-jointly income $151,901 – $231,450 (single: $91,151 – $190,150)
    33% m-f-j $231,451 – $413,350 (single: $190,151 – $413,350)

    BTW notice that in one tax bracket only does the max income remain the same for married-filing-jointly and single: that 33% tax. Now why would that be the exception?

    35% m-f-j $413,351 – $466,950 (single: $413,315 – $415,050)
    39.6% m-f-j $466,951+ (single: $415,051+)

    That leaves the 10%, lowest tax bracket and then the 15% and 25% brackets. The 15% tax bracket maxes at $75,300 m-f-j (single $37,650) and the 25% bracket maxes at $151,900 m-f-j (single $91,150. So, a huge number of taxpayers probably fall into the 15% and 25% zones.

    This is going to be a plan at least partially drawn up by House Republicans, apparently. Didn’t Trump say originally that his top tax rate would be 25%? And it really doesn’t go into enough detail yet to be able to judge whether it’s good or not. It’s going to make a big difference how they mess around with the income levels for each tax bracket.
