Foist! My foist foist.
Drive-by:
Herewith, a simple way to understand the destructive failure of most reading instruction in the United States.”
Herewith.
I tend to read texts I like out loud, since I live alone, and why not?
I bet the vast majoity of actors, voice-actors, newsreaders, radio DJs, and politicians didn’t learn with the “whole-word” method, but instead with phonics.
I can read Mychal Massie essays and pronounce every word perfectly. Even the few in each that I’ve never seen, and either figure out because of known etymology, or context.
This article is amazing. Each written word is an individual phonetic circuit, telling our mouth-parts, vocal cords, (chords? I wish), and lungs what to do, left-to right.

Paderewski was not only a great pianist he was the first prime minister of the newly free country of Poland in 1919 and its representative to the League of Nations before he quit politics in 1922 and returned to music. He came to the US after the Germans invaded Poland and died in NYC of pneumonia in June, 1941.
President Roosevelt had his body transported to DC for a state funeral. He was interred at Arlington in the USS Maine Mast Memorial until his body could be returned to a free
Poland for burial. It was thought that would be at the end of WW II but when Russia invaded Poland his remains remained at Arlington until they were returned to a free Poland in 1992. Well, not all of him, his heart remains buried in the US.

I worked at a condo in Boston, on Boylston, many years ago.
One tenant had an early iteration of one of these. Almost nobody had security cameras back then. I was charged with delivering their mail, literally keying in and putting it on their counters… or watering their plants.
I played their pianos, too. Steinways and these. It was only on 3.5 floppies back then.
Until a security guy told me they’re starting to use cameras, in the mid-90s.
That was a neat job. Most expensive place to live in Boston, at the time.

I remember when my husband and I had been married just about a year, he asked what I wanted for my birthday. I wanted a new vacuum cleaner, we were poor folk and it wasn’t something I was going to buy just because, but mine was a hand me down and it was on it’s last leg.
He balked at that and said one piece of advice he was given was don’t buy your wife a vacuum cleaner for a present. I told him that was stupid and I wanted a new vacuum cleaner. He argued that I needed a new one but what did I want. I told him when you have a need that is the same as a want and to buy me what I wanted.
He did and then because I have my own ornery streak when I unwrapped it I told him that I couldn’t believe he would get me something to work with for my birthday. He became very flustered telling me I told him too. I told him the advice giver apparently left out you never buy your wife something just because she tells you to, because secretly she wants you to do the right thing. He told me he’d take it back and he was sorry. Then I finally let out my laughter and told him I was joking.
Eventually he learned I wasn’t like most women and preferred live plants and flowers that would keep on giving instead of cut flowers that die and preferred things that made my life easier over diamonds and pearls. lol

It has something to do with when the English tried to cross breed mute swans with another type of swan. I don’t remember the specifics. But all the swans will eventually lose the down and become as white as the parents. Normally they will be almost solid white before they fly off for the winter even though, sometimes are still a very pale grey around then but usually not.
One of the little guys was flapping its tiny wings yesterday it was too cute. I didn’t catch it on camera. When they are very small they ride on the mom or dads back if they get tired.

SO cute – I’d kiss ’em’s head except the parental units would beat/flap/bite me to death. 😀
LikeLiked by 5 people
Yeah, they are very friendly with a few families but not with strangers, they will hiss at them. Still I have no illusion that the parents wouldn’t rip my arm off if I tried to touch one.
Sometimes people will say, how much harm can it do? Well they have sharp nails on their cute webbed feet, needle teeth in their cute orange bills, and they are strong enough to propel their cute 20 – 25 pound bodies out of the water and into the air. How interested are you in finding out how much harm they can do ? 😀
I love the babies and they will take food right out of our hands probably in another 2 months. The U.S. Wildlife Service has designated the Mute swans an invasive species and can come in and cull them. Rumor has it one year they came in and took the babies, people make up all kinds of things so I don’t know it it happened or not, but I know that there was a scuffle with one of the “Lake People” and we haven’t seen any government folks since then.
I asked the person who allegedly had the scuffle and all he said is that @%$&*! should never mistake crazy people for low hanging fruit 😎. Said character is a Vietnam Vet who walked out of his church when the priest introduced a family from Vietnam that the church was sponsoring. Not that long before announcing that the church was going to be helping the Vietnamese family the veteran went to the church for help given he was having problems readjusting to civilian life and he had a young baby and wife, they told him there was no money.

See if you can get enough folks to petition your county/city to pass a local law to protect them, some places have and it causes the Feds headaches when they try to mess with them.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I don’t think it is a problem. I don’t think they would attempt to actually do much on our lake. All of the access land is privately owned. The only access they could gain is through the privately owned town beach and even for that they would have to get permission. They don’t even send out wardens to check for fishing licenses or life vests on boats anymore because access is such a hassle for them and then everyone knows they are coming.
Plus the warden that was on the lake grew up with some of the people and as far as I know never enforced license/lifesaver ordinances.
I think fighting it might just attract attention and they’d be like, “What?” “We don’t bother you at all.”
I am not convinced that US WS ever took any cygnets whereas others are convinced. I do believe they were out on the lake what their intention was I don’t know.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Our lake’s totally privately owned and where the state may have a de facto interest as it has a dam and regulated birds feed/nest/swim in or on it the only time we see anyone is when we ask. We accept no state anything, all the fish stocked we did privately, so they have no call as to what/where/when/how much we fish.
Game warden’s a local, even have his cell number, so he’s more interested in poachers and helping us with predators and nuisance animals. Feds don’t come out much at all, only time I’ve seen them is when I called them on hog problems. In all we are on our own and that’s just how we like it.

Yeah, our purple martins have all fledged and are flying about with the adults, fattening up, learning to be a flock and getting ready for migration. The group from our houses is doing late afternoon rendezvous with other groups, getting familiar with each other and one morning without so much as a warning they’ll all be gone as one large group. Back to measuring the year by the wildlife.

Sparrows can be a problem so we regularly haul the houses down for a lookie-see and sometimes a clean out. Martins can be labor intensive, we start getting the houses cleaned in January as they can start arriving in February. Nearly anything can find a way in, last year we had a Great Crested Flycatcher nest in right with the Martins and neither minded the other; we draw the line with sparrows, they are out.
We enjoy their morning singing, their various songs during the day and watching them dart through our trees at top speed. Also gun watching them drink by skimming the lake at high speed with beaks open.

Sooper and Right Scoop are getting attacked on the ‘No Comment’ thread at IOTWreport.com for this post. Get over there and support them.

Okay, I don’t understand the site. Is there no way to reply to specific comments made? I was unable to up vote and down vote comments, if I chose to do so. I really hate FB comment based sites, but I can do that if need be, but before I get involved, I want to know if you can respond directly to a specific comment!!!

Don’t bother. It’s really archaic system they have there. Also, all they are doing is laughing with each other. Not sure why they believe this site is pro hillary. Anyway, I wouldn’t worry about small minded people infesting an unknown site.
