This is very true, Civilian Appointed positions/agencies within the government who control or influence policy. I have seen this first hand. Now, that’s why we need Trump, this crap will end at noon 20 January 2017. Hopefully I’ll be there as Trump takes the oath of Office, then go over too the Pentagon and personally help two of those squirrels pack.

As long as we’re cleaning up around Jerusalem how about bulldozing the Dome of the Rock and rebuilding the Temple? UN’s position is thatbthe Temple Mount is a
Moslem site andvthere’s no proof that it ever had a Judeo-Christian role. We could take care of that and show the UN that their command of history sucks as badly as does their accounting.

Speaking of bacon, someone asked me the other day if you took a pig to a butcher if you could request all of it be turned into bacon. I wasn’t able to control my laughter. Funnier yet they thought if you have a 250 lb pig you could get 250 lbs of bacon. Once I got my laughter under control I explained where bacon comes from and explained why a 250 lb pig doesn’t equal 250 lbs of meat.

Reading the physiology grammar school books from over a hundred years ago, and comparing that to what is taught today, it doesn’t surprise me one bit. The cookbook from the same time period devotes a several page chapter to building and maintaining a fire correctly in a wood stove and how air flow is controlled via the damper and flue.

This lady is in her 60’s, you’d think by that age somewhere along the way you would have learned a little about your food.
They should let Wee and I run the public school system and then people would get hands on experience on where their food comes from. It really should be a requirement that as part of a child’s education they learn how to plant and harvest and raise an animal for slaughter.

That’s why I laughed.
She did try to recover and said since she knew of people who had old cows all turned into HB, she thought you could turn all of the pig into bacon.
I told her you could turn it all into sausage or ground pork.
Butchers would become billionaires if they could get all bacon from a pig and all steak from a cow. lol

I have three versions; the newest is from 1986 and the oldest is from 1956. The third is missing its cover and first few pages, but I believe it was published either in the 1960’s or 1970’s.

That Boston cooking school cookbook from 1912 I picked up is full of photos and figures.
Many of the “salads” are just objects placed whole on a bed of lettuce (lobster salad was the funniest)

My old-time go-to is The Joy of Cooking by Marion Rombauer. I have my mother’s wedding present version published in 1950. Both covers have come off and it is held together with a big rubber band. Mother gave me a new version in 2006, but I love the old one best. The new version, by Mrs. Rombauer’s grandson, says you can’t follow meat recipes from the old cookbooks without modifying them, because there is so much lower fat content now in meat than there was in the 40s and 50s that the recipes just don’t work.

Fat content’s generally related to the animal’s level of activity and what it eats. Feedlot animals have more fat as they just sit in lots and feed, they have very little activity. Our range-fed cattle move around more, eat grass and not fattening feed so they’ll have less fat. I’d think that the fat contents of ‘modern’ feedlot cattle would be higher -I still have a larding needle we’d use way-back to fatten up roasts. Ah well, not a problem we hsve any longer, we want a great cut of beef we just use our local butcher shop and get exactly what we want, no more settling for what ‘they’ have.

Yeah, mine was a wedding gift, or shower gift, in 1967. It is a three ring binder type and the pages are all stained and falling out, but it is the one I go to when I need a recipe or need to look up info.

Yummy. I eat pancakes every day. I have managed to get all the way up to 94 pounds. That may sound bad, but is real good, I was at 81 after the health stuff took me down for a bit.

My best friend was only 5′ tall and very small boned. Before she got pregnant when she was 21, she weighed 85 lbs. She looked perfectly normal and was healthy.

Some peeps are tiny. As long as they are healthy and not emaciated, I think that’s okay. I think for me, I remember when I was young, even then I weighed about 120, so for me, I need a bit more.

Knowing you are 5’3″ makes a difference. That is my height, too. I am medium boned and always had a lot of muscle, so carried more weight than showed, usually about 130. I got my weight down to 114 when I was in my early thirties and finally realized I looked, and probably was, borderline anorexic. So, I am sure you are way underweight. You should probably come stay with me for a while and the weight would just pack back on. LOL

I am much improved from what landed me in hosp, other stuff not so much, but I alive! The other stuff though Tundra isn’t going to get better, so that’s okay in that I know what I am dealing with. My hub likes to say, “you see me movin’, don’t ya?” Course he a nut, lol. I am 5 3 and when was healthy weighed about 130 or so. No one has told me what has caused the weight loss. It happened over a period of years and just didn’t stop till I was at about 90. But hosp dropped me way down, so I am happy I am at 94 cuz that’s better than before I got real sick, so maybe will keep gaining. Took 6 months to add that weight, but I will keep trying. I just try to get it up there more. I was drinking that ensure for awhile, hub got it thinking would be good, but it filled me up so much it made me skip a meal and I figure the meal is better. So, all in all, I am doing better. Thanks for asking Tundra.

Funny thing–that one picture that nyet puts up, I guess is some kinda preserves and whipped cream on the pancakes? But it looks like chocolate to me and it’s got me to thinking of melting some chocolate on them!!

I feel bad for these folks, many of them are retired folks, but with how many times they’ve been under water it’s probably something they should have been planning for. It’s bad they threw it on them with less than a months notice, but they had to know after the last bad flood that there were major issues. Sewer lines were busted, electric lines were everywhere and the folks had to be rescued because they refused to leave as the water was doing all that damage.

Yesterday, my neighbor called. There’s a fox with 3 little babies who will play in his yard, then head up toward our house. We keep looking but haven’t seen them yet. They’re probably going to the side of our driveway right into the woods.
He told me that last week, a bear went through the front, automated doors of one of the grocery stores in our small downtown area. We’re waiting for the weekly newspaper to see the story. It was reported on a channel out of Atlanta. The bear went straight to the meat department and started eating chicken. It’s a little confusing about why it apparently took the Sheriff’s Department so much time to get there, since the deputies are all over the place here. Anyway, by the time they got there, someone had opened the back door and the bear had left.
A bear had visited our neighbor’s porch a few weeks ago, while they were out of town. He had left deer food, or something in big, covered trash cans. The bear tore up the porch and destroyed his grill. He asked if we had heard anything – no. We still haven’t seen any bears, although they are around us and use a path that takes them across our road right down from our house.

My sister lives in BC and a few years ago she told me about a friend who lived near taking groceries into her kitchen after going to the grocery store. She had carried a couple of bags in and left the door open to bring in more. When she got back with the other bags, there was a bear in her kitchen eating the food she had just carried in. They have bears, moose, and all kinds of wild animals running around up there.

A goodly portion of a pig that was tearing up land on our ‘street’ and tried to take my hand off is now resting in a pan in my oven, covered in bacon and swinning in apple cider. The Circle of Cuisine…you can do that with bear too.

Yeah, cookbooks tight up into the 50s had game coeaning and cooking sections. I’ve eaten black bear, tasted a lot like wild pig. Not sure I’d want to go to the trouble of hunting, cleaning and grilling grizzly.

This is one of those perfect examples of ‘if we wait long enough the situation will resolve itself’ calls. And it apparently did.

I had a very traumatic experience this morning walking my dog. There was a mommie duck with about 5 very small babies. She was a little concerned about us, so we passed quickly and then turned to watch her with the babies. She called them all to her and they bunched up around her tightly…………..and, in a flash, our resident hawk dropped out of the sky, grabbed a baby and flew off. The mother gave chase, but the hawk was gone. I was left staring. We know the ducks have trouble getting their babies raised, but now I know for sure what happens to them. 😯

Yup, but there’s beauty in it too, it’s what hawks do for a living. The one that nailed the pigeon right in front of us at the Wally World parking lit, sweeping in between the minivans and pickups, boffed it right on the ground and sat defiantly on its dinner as the patrons snapped pix on their cells. Got to see it all in slo-mo.
Those talons kill cleanly and quickly, hawks can’t afford a fight, so there’s no suffering. We feel bad for the duck because we internalize their plight but in general a duck’s life is no piece of cake.
I watch them nail rabbits, mice, rats and the occasional snake. I also see them miss a lot. We had that nearsighted one who’d miss and slam into the side of the birdhouse trying to get a martin. We also have the ones that have gone down along the interstate when they’ve been sucked into an 18-wheeler during a dive. It all balances out.

I can understand your experience, and I can understand what Czar says. We all know he is correct. But I would have reacted just like you. I grew up totally removed from learning any of the kind of life michellc, for example, talks about. I read her stories and realize we largely lived in two different worlds. I admire all the people who can do what she does. I lived in a city, ate food from the grocery store, and watched Disney on tv. Roy Rogers and the others didn’t have a lot of animal-dying stuff in them, as I recall. My grandmother came from a farm and lived more like michellc. They were very poor, though. She used to sit on their front porch and shoot squirrels to eat. She would wring the chickens’ necks and prepare them. By the time my mother came along, even though they lived in a small GA farm area, my mother didn’t do any of those things. She worked some in the crop fields. I never even did that. My grandmother taught me how to cook and do some very limited canning.
When people started talking about moving away from big cities and learning to live more or less in the woods or a farm-like setting, I spent two years trying to figure out if we could do it. I was willing to learn, but I finally realized I would have to be much younger and stronger because it would take me a long time. Aside from the mental and emotional changes that would be necessary, I would not be physically capable.

We have a Cooper’s hawk that nest down on our creek. I saw one and hear the other when he hit some doves. The one I heard was literally on our front porch and it sounded like a shot when he hit it. All I got to see were the feathers fluttering to the ground. 😯 😯

This one is so used to being here that many times I have walked up within two feet of it on a six foot fence and it was a little before he flew away. It is really a beautiful bird.

I have seen them swoop into my front yard which is pretty open for a ways and catch a bird. Worst thing for me was when one got a bird in backyard and started pulling the feathers off it getting it ready to eat I guess. I didn’t know what to do, bird was dead, so I just let them be. My dog though was not happy, he wanted the hawk. 🙂

How about another crowd sourcing picture project. I tried, with my limited skills and time today to look this image up, and came back with the astounding result that it is a statue. It’s in the Louve, and my son says it’s the most awesome piece of artwork he’s ever seen. Any ideas? I’d love more information on her. All the son did was post a picture with no details.

There is a huge granite tombstone at Arlington that has had a draped American flag somehow cut/burned/etched into it that you can’t feel yet it is 3-dimensional. I learned many years ago in junior hi art class, making stupid clay vases, that I was never cut out for the artsy life.

The neighbor whose land we’re dehogging doesn’t live on the land, he lives in a town just outside of New Orleans. He cleared about 40 of the acres and planted it in corn, sunflowers and other feed/browse for the deer, turkeys, ducks and other wild game that lives here, that’s what the hogs are tearing up.
He has built three stands out there, he has them so his and his friends’ kids can hunt. The planted areas support the game all year while we all get to harvest game during the season. Kids get to learn to hunt and process what they eat – while this may seem abhorrent and primitive to many city folk kids and parents who wantbto learn to hunt enjoy doing so have a safe and private place to do so. Between the group,of us out here that’s about 400 acres of feeding/bedding ground, not counting the other wooded areas surrounding us, that supports the kid’s ability and right to hunt.

My city, formerly nerdy, stepson wants to come up and go off our property into the forest to hunt deer and turkeys. He is even talking about building a stand on our property, in the woods part. I was surprised, though, when he started talking about hunting the boar around here. Is it correct that it’s not a good idea to try to do that alone?

They are not too good to shoot and eat. Better to catch em then pen em up and feed them corn for a while. Unless they are a pest. Then just shoot and fergit. The Buzzards an Possums will do the rest.

I fisagree, I’m eating one right now. Boars can get musky and tough but I believevthat mostnof thevproblems cone from processing, storing and cooking incorrectly. There can also be taste issues from what the pig’s been eating. Ours have been rooting old farm and and green corn.
I don’t let the hair touch the meat when I’m skinning, am very careful gutting and freeze the meat quickly. I defrost on the counter, never in a microwave, and wet-cook in a covered pan at about 170 degrees. I layer on a lot of good quality fatty bacon and keep the meat from drying by putting apple or pibeapple juice in the pan. I have used red wine too but that may be a bit strong for a lot of folks.
And then there’s sausage…

Not the best idea, no. Thry will generally run away from you but I’ve run into more than one boar hunter who’s been damaged by one, Some years back we ran into a hunter who’d been a boar man for a long time, he lifted up his pants leg to show us a large chunk a sow took out of his calf after she double backed. You can also run i to a boar and a three hundred pounder can really ruin your day, those teeth can slice you up like razors.
The four 40-pounders we trapped tried to charge through the trap screen to get at us as soon as we walked up, females tend to work on prey as a group, and the young boar just wanted to get stbus period, he just happened to be there with the girls. If you run into a gerd of females, especially with piglets in tow, life can get exciting there too.
Best to go with someone, more bester to go with ‘someones’, especially if you don’t have onevof those dreaded semiauto assault pig guns. Even more besterer if you have a hog dog or two. The pig’s eyesight ain’t all that good but their hearing and sense of smell’s better than excellent so if you smell like a person or some grocery store detergent or can’t walk silently your chances to Get Pork aren’t good.

For some reason I gave my two cents next door, and the only argument I got so far other than “cause Trump says so” has been that stacking ten plus immigrants into a two bedroom home raises property values. SMH
