There are 129 lighthouses in Michigan alone, spread across the Great Lakes; 42 on Lake Superior, 44 on Lake Michigan, and 43 on Lake Huron. Thirty-four of the lighthouses are open to the public, and 16 contain museums. Here are a few:
Did you know that you can be a volunteer lighthouse keeper for a week or two or more? You can.

This might be a fun way to visit Michigan. Some of the lighthouses charge a fee, but others don’t.
There are a few lighthouses that have been turned into bed & breakfast inns:

There is even one at Whitefish Point, home of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum (for czar!)
The oldest lighthouse in Michigan was built in 1825. It is located at Fort Gratiot (Port Huron). One of my cousins used to live just down the street.
The bridge in the background is the Blue Water Bridge, which connects Port Huron, MI and Sarnia, Ontario. That is Canada at the far left of the picture. I have been over that bridge many times and under it several times. It is at the mouth of the St. Clair River where it meets Lake Huron.

Thank you, stella!

Congrats, Mary! I hope that your summer is very rejuvenating for you!

Czar and I volunteer to run the lights houses for 2 weeks. Summer only, don’t want Czar freezing when using the outside facilities……… All day fishing, laser light shows at night, classic rock on the lighthouse radio frequency…… Canadian and American maidens bring our meals, all the beer we can drink…… What do you say Czar you in?

Actually, I think you have lighthouse duties to perform. Better check the website!

In a lighthouse, you are very far away from civilized things. With add to that by having 24/7 puns and bad jokes with czar around? Just sayin’.

Stella, I am from Connecticut and have seen a number of lighthouses up and down the New England coast, but I had no idea there were so many on the Great Lakes (but of course it makes sense — just never thought about it much!). Very interesting. Thanks for posting this.

And the ones I talked about here are only in Michigan. There are many in the Great Lakes in Canada and Wisconsin, and some in Minnesota, and I think in Ohio and New York too.
Oops! Forgot Indiana (and Pennsylvania?).

For example, here’s a map of Lake Huron lighthouses. More than half of them are in Canada:

Morning all! I’m so glad it’s Friday!!! Stella, I’m loving the lighthouses. Thank you for posting them. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the ocean, lake, and lighthouse series you have been doing. Makes for a very enjoyable start to the day. 🙂

Yes! 🙂
I grew up near the ocean and that’s where sandandsea comes from. All things nautical make me smile. 🐳

Thanks Stella, love the lighthouses. Maybe someday we can visit. I would love to see the lakes too. The biggest lake I have ever seen is Lake of the Woods in Minnesota.

The great likes are all really small. They just look big in photos to attract tourists.

Thanks nyet. You saved me all the trouble of a trip to Michigan. The only part of the state I’ve ever visited was Detroit and Dearborn, which is unfortunate.

Looks the same, just with standing water.

Awww. That was a perfectly good besmirching of the great lakes area you foiled. Curses!
