I really stay away from the Lake Michigan beaches now, except in late fall and early spring.

Especially after I saw the 3″, sand-colored beach spiders. :shudder:

Hey Czar, that’s a good beach! Drove down to Destin ( might be spelled wrong), some good salt water dives not too far out. Food, and entertainment was excellent. Oh almost forgot, when I was there, O club had a lunch special, dozen oysters/ half shell, one long necker for $5. My lunch bill exceeded my per diem, went over to Pensacola, then up to Ranger camp to visit old friends……

You Thinking of a C-223? C-123 and C-7A were both used to support troops with short fields but 123 had a ‘K’ model that had two small jet engines on the wings to help decrease takeoff run. 123s had a long and varied history in Virtnam, they supplied Khe Sahn, specially modified they worked H&I missions over the Trail, my father flew on them as thrybsprayed Agent Orange and an acquaintance of mine whonworked for a civilian independent agency even had one he used that wasn’t painted- it was so polished it looked as if it were chrome plated.
After Vietnam sone found their way into ‘civilian’ service. Barry Seal flew one out of Mena and that ill-fated US-crewed and owned plane that was shot down in Nicaragua while smuggling illegal weapons from…Mena…to The Contras in violation of the Boland Amendment was also a C-123.
They were originally designed to be an assault glider, man attribute frequently falsely attributed to the C-7A, but after the design work started the AF gave up on the concept of gliders entirely. I loved both of those planes, on a hot takeoff or landing they were a hundred times better than any amusement park ride I’d ever been on and ascreliable as the family fog.

We were at our small town rodeo last night and like all rodeos in this neck of the woods, much like pretty much all events opened with honoring, followed by saluting the flag and the national anthem then prayer.
Later on the clown was telling jokes about politicians, in particular Obama, and one involving Hillary and Bill Clinton. Again, that is just what rodeo clowns do in this neck of the woods.

A young lady sitting next to us at one point told her Mom that she couldn’t wait until her husband got transferred back to Oklahoma and went on to say that this wouldn’t happen where they were stuck at in California or at least not without people trying to shut the place down. That they hate the flag, God and love Obama.
I’m assuming what was her sister asked her if everyone was like that and she told her there were a few who were not, but like her they were outnumbered because most who lived around there were Muslims and Spanish speaking people.

I don’t know what part of California she lives in, but that is sad to me and made me realize that I take a lot for granted living in my neck of the woods.

I have a friend who was born and raised in S. Cal. We both lived in a small town north of San Diego. Back in the 80’s her husband was transferred to a small town in Colorado. I remember telling her it would be different living there and her response was that it was a small town just like where we lived. I was right. She was not accepted at all and had a great deal of trouble making friends. She is a very nice, kind, gentle, sweet lady and is well liked by people who know her. She is tall and pretty with a wide bright smile and long blond hair. She was just too flashy for the women in that small town, even though she was fairly conservative in her dress by Cal. standards.

Same here. Many snowbirds hold us in utter contempt and are literally convinced we can’t read above a third grade level. Some never change their mind because they never open their eyes. Since our values and religious beliefs are very different from theirs, we are considered ignorant, intolerant hicks. The hillbilly reputation stays alive.

It wouldn’t matter at all if the damned Democrat voters would stay in their own hellholes and not insist on trying to ruin things for people who do not want to live the way they do. Do you see me in NYC telling them to eat grits and go to church on Sunday? No. I’m down here minding my own business, and if I visit I won’t tell them how to live or insult their intelligence.

Besides, we in the South have enough Atlantas, Miamis, etc. we don’t need more liberal enclaves.

To your last point, I have read that there are counties, especially in North Carolina, where wealthy people bought property and built second homes. They demanded all kinds of services, infrastructure, etc. Eventually some of the families who had lived in these counties for generations were forced out because they couldn’t pay the taxes on their homes, and some of the higher paying jobs were replaced with tourism and other low paying jobs. Many thought at first that development would bring jobs, but it was pretty much temporary construction jobs.

My hometown, the whole of the little town, is covered in flags still, and not the little bitty ones, but the big guys on fence poles. They always go up for Memorial and Veterans Days, with a whole herd of people who volunteer for the week or so of work to place them. They are mounted in a white cross with the name of a citizen who gave their life in service to our country. There is even an online site families can use to locate the flag belonging to their loved one. And when I say the whole town, I mean not just the main drag but all the roads and streets around our little town. It’s one of my favorite things about our town.

Five years ago in April we had a tornado that just about wiped the town out, people died, I’d say maybe half the businesses either destroyed or unable to open back up for awhile due to damage to their buildings or to the area around them. People still homeless and jobs lost. I figured the flags would not be put up that year. Nope. They waved proundly right in the middle of the rubble that had not yet been cleaned up in some areas.

I’ve heard a few different over the years making some rude comment about flag ceremonies and/or prayer and I’ve seen them refuse to put their hand over their heart or bow their head, but they’re so outnumbered I doubt they’d have the nerve to cause a big stink.

Some of our area schools are becoming pain in the rears about both, but parents and kids ignore them and do it anyway.

In the Former USA, in ethnically European USA, these memorials are usually quite austere… quite MBOB in their presentation, actually, and tend not to include teddy bears, purple drank, and ‘rillos, like in any project in Ferguson, MO.

They were, and are, crosses and flowers. I see many every time I drive. Not much unlike that done in memory of Miss Chambers down in Panola County.

Ghetto America took the roadside memorial to Arab levels and made a mockery of what was once, to those who knew the person, a real sacred memorial. They Desecrate, with purple drank, ‘rillos, and all that. And the teddy bears are just narrative props anyway. Might as well use binkies and colorful sippy cups.

I don’t know Stella, I pray a prayer for whoever the memorials I drive by represent. There have been several memorials between my house and my moms, they come and go usually they fade away and disappear but there is one small wooden cross nailed to a wooden pole it has blue silk carnations on it, it is always fresh looking so someone who loved them is still not ready to let them go. They may not be there but it is someones letting go point.

My next door neighbor, who lives on the blvd., had an incident where a young man lost his life right at his corner on a motorcycle. His, the man’s, mother, put up a cross and things like candles and different things. Lots of people came at first to see where their friend or family member had died. Of course, over time, it dwindled to pretty much no one except his mom. Has been years and my neighbor has moved the memorial to the inside of the sidewalk into his yard so that it can stay there for her. She still comes. To me, if it gives comfort, let it stay.

Interesting little side note. Tom Cruise was starring in a film about Barry Seal, the drug runner who operated out of that long forgotten Mena airport. The movie would have cast an unfavorable light on the Bush and Clinton families and their shady Iran-Contra related activities. There was a lot of talk that the movie might have also cost Hillary a lot of support in the November election, especially with heart-throb Cruise starring as the tragic and assassinated protagonist.
Latest release date us in early January, 2017. That way regardless of what the Hillary feelings are it won’t matter a damn. If she loses, so what. If she wins, well, so what? Nice timing Hollywood whores.

✓ Got it. I am not always in the very front of the line when it comes to catching on.

For me some of my earliest memories is my dad’s excitement before an Ali match and the discussion at my house about Ali’s politics, personality, and unabashedly holding Archie Bunker like views when it came to the races. And of course his boxing 🙂

One of my dad’s friends who loved Ali was married to woman who had 2 mulatto children from her first marriage. When she was first married to the black man they bought a home in a black neighborhood and moved in.

Maybe 1960 in in Chicago? I wasn’t born yet but I heard the stories sitting around my kitchen table. The response was immediate and brutal the neighbors did not want a white woman married to a black man in their neighborhood and they made themselves known loud and clear.

He left her with two children about 4 and 6 years old after the family dog was left at their front door stabbed to death.

She said F* them, this is my house, they can’t scare me away. She was one of my parents best friends and I saw a lot of her growing up.

Anyhow his leaving, and her defiance seemed to change something in her neighbors and suddenly she made some friends and things simmered down. Then she met Art a white man who in all honesty bore a strange resemble to chubby Steven Hawking. They married and they had no other problems than anyone else on their block and two white people lived in an all black neighbor hood in Chicago starting in the late 60’s all the way until his death some 30 years later.

So I value their wisdom as somehow with all the mayhem, the marches and riots these two very white and rather odd people not only made a home for themselves on Chicago’s South Side in a very black neighborhood but they turned enemies into friends.

Anyhow 🙄 They agreed as you that Ali was very much a person of his time. He would have no sooner spilled blood for Mohamed than he would for Uncle Sam. Art was a particular defender of Ali when my dad had friends over who were unforgiving of Ali not going to Vietnam.

What amazes me is that there are people so dull as to believe that Ali had an IQ of 78/79. Good grief. I would wager that he had a genius IQ. I know he took a test but I suspect he scored just as he chose to score on the test.

Ali received a Hollywood Star in 2002 and he would not accept it if it was put on the walk because he took his name from the Prophet Mohammad and the prophet should not have his name walked on. So Hollywood accommodated him and put his star on a wall. It is the only star a wall, on this I would have told him he wasn’t getting a star.

    If only.

I’m going to the store on Monday and buying them some flags to put in front of their station if they would like to.

A local official reportedly told firefighters in Rhode Island that they should not fly the American flag from their trucks.

Fred Gralinski of the Central Coventry Fire District bizarrely compared it to ISIS flying its black flag while riding around in Iraq or Syria.

“They look like a bunch of yahoos,” Gralinski said at a board meeting. “Like in the paper, like ISIS in Syria going to take over a city. I don’t think they need that big flag on the back of the truck. That’s not America to me. Those are a bunch of terrorists. So, I’m going to ask you to take the flag off that truck.”

    Go to hell Fred Granlinski.

Fred, sit down, drink your half pint of chocolate milk, take your meds and shut up.

Or no fruit cup, plus double electroshock this evening.
