To me, the quality of the light in the photo feels more like the end of the day, as opposed to the beginning. Am I right?

I tried to post a link to our photos from our trip to Apulia and Basilicata, and it didn’t show up, and when I try to repost, WordPress says “duplicate”. So I will try another time. Here is the photo link if you are so inclined. Matera, a city in Basilicata, has an ancient history, and the mid-20th century it was sad (the squalor of people forced to live with their livestock in one room caves) but that has passed and the city is being rejuvenated for the celebration as European Cultural City 2019. It’s the lake that my parents live on and we get one swan family every year. Our last family finally aged out, so this pair has come for the last two or three years. I love watching the babies grow. They will be lucky if two make it through the summer, the most we have had survive is 5, that was really something to see.

This year we also apparently have a widow, he is a lone swam, absolutely beautiful, the biggest one I have seen with the, longest most elegant neck.

I belive that swans, like geese, mate for life. We have a number of geese who are local natives that are loners, lost their mates somehow. I really like the geese, amazing to be sitting on the shore and have a flock of 50 or so land about a hundred feet away and start swimming by. Having swans would add a touch of elegant British class to the lake without the Brit overtones of pretentiousness.
Had a poultry dealer tell me that geese are ducks with long necks and swans are geese with longer necks. Maybe true but I see swans as fowl at a tea shop and ducks as juvenile delinquents at the corner bar.

There are geese and ducks on my parents lake but not many. The swans run them off, they are very territorial and it is a small lake. Hunting season is not until autumn as far as I know and we have several hunters. I agree that watching geese land and take off is beautiful.

Watching the swans learn to fly is really joyful. One year, maybe 3 years ago, one of the babies had its foot disappear, lake lore is a snapper chomped it off. Anyhow I never realized that feet for swans are necessary for them to get up the speed in the water in order for them to fly so the footless swan (nick named) Quasimodo, 🙂 was destined to become a coyote’s dinner once the lake one froze over. Meanwhile my parents contacted a swan rescue (who knew) and some chap came out with a rubber boat and a net and caught Quasimodo and took him to his sanctuary.

And swans are not tea toddlers they are generally quite aggressive “ours” know we feed them and they will even take food out of our hands before the babes are hatched and after the babies are larger. But they still hiss and will bite a stranger. They really are beautiful though.

This is the family from last year. It may be the two same adults, my mom thinks that they are the same pair.

We will put food out but don’t want the geese to lose their natural fear of people. We’re debating putting nest sites out as we can’t monitor the sites 24/7 and the possibility of idiots on the lake disturbing them is all too real. Strange as it is, I like to sit out while wearing my sound-enhancing earphones and listen to their wings as they flap flying over or coming in for a landing. Geese will sit on the lake and chatter while the ducks don’t say anything until they take off.

We don’t feed the geese, one family who put food out for them was turned into some agency and they were warned and then ticketed, so they put out a “Wildlife Refuge” sign in front of their home as if their neighbors of 8 million years would be fooled 🙄. They no longer feed the geese. This family in particular were big hunters, the dad is now too sickly to hunt and his son is estranged so as far as I know no one in the family hunts.

I think geese are pretty to watch but I am happy we don’t get many as they are so dirty. There are loads of lakes and ponds around so they have plenty of places to go. We swim all summer long so honestly, the less geese the better. I think their lake is rated the third cleanest in IL or at least it used to be up until very recently.

I don’t know if it is common or not but the swans really do dominate the lake while allowing visiting duke, geese, and coots. I love the coots. We get herons, my favorite after the swans and white egrets. One summer we had hundreds of egrets in the swamp just down the road, that was magical.

The lake is small maybe 3,000 ft ft 3,000 feet. I used to be able to swim across it in my younger days, I swam about half of it last summer with my daughter.

The swans are fed by most families on the lake but they mostly forage for themselves.

We have thousands of acres that are pasture and dozens of ponds to lakes so the geese don’t have food worries, our feeding is just an sometimes thing as I am not keen on having to scrape goose &&&& off the patio as neighbors in Florida who fed them needed to do.
We don’t have desires to have geese or ducks as we’d mostly end up feeding the local predators or hunters, plus they’d attract those Lothario Muscovy illegal alien ducks. Swans just might be off the ‘Hey, Bubba, them’s some good eatins’ list, though I wouldn’t bet the farm on it. At some $1500 a pair were some Bubba to eat my affectations I do belive that things would get rather heated.

Local news is all lit up about a grad student at Tulane University who was in town with his fiancé to plan their wedding. They were staying in a hotel and he decidid to go out alone for a drink. He went to a bar on Magazine Street and was there from about midnight to threeish when he left. An hour later his robbed and shot-to-death body was found about two miles away, minutes after a surveillance camera got him buying two bottles of water at a convenience store, just a few hundred feet from where his body was found.
The place he was not deserted, it’s right on South Claiborne, a well-travelled major street. Populated as the area is, as well-travelled as it is, no one heard the shot nor reported the body. He was found with all of his pockets turned inside-out, which could have been the shooter or any numbers of passers-by who saw hom as an opportunity.
Question I have is that since he attended Tulane, just a hop-skip away, WTF was he doing in one of the major Beirut areas in town? You’re cautioned about being in that area during the daytime, at 3AM it ain’t safe to be watching it on TV, what was a grad engineering student doing there?
No idea on the perp from official sources but beer bets all seem to lean in one direction.

Pat Buchanan: Bush Republicanism Is Dead

    http://www.breitbart.com/2016-presidential-race/2016/05/07/pat-buchanan-bush-republicanism-dead/

    How then should Trump proceed?

Unify the party, to the degree he can, by keeping an open door to the defeated and offering a hand in friendship to all who wish to join his ranks, while refusing to compromise the issues that got him where he is. If the Bushes and neocons wish to depart, let them go.

I simply cannot wait to see the look on that sniveling rat Paul Ryan’s face when he exits his meeting with The Donald.

I’m almost sure that come win or lose the Republican Party won’t be the same after November, I just pray that we can hold together and not lose Congress until the new oarty can gel. If Hillary wins it won’t be as easy to screw us if she doesn’t have Congress as well as the Supreme Court, not impossible, just harder.

Not Trump that interests me as much as those blathering state-level functionaries that can torpedo candidates at the local level. Remember the Mississippi senatorial election in 2024 where longtime incumbent Cochran (R) was challenged by (R) McDaniel? State runoff went 51% Cochran, 49% McDaniel after some RATS allegedly were paid-off to illegally vote as Republicans to squash McDaniel.
There are a lot of pissed RINO elite who are out to teach the public that democracy has been dead for a long tome and our only option is to eat the **** they serve. If it means giving the WH and Congress to the RATS then I believe they will. They have the resources and protection to weather the cleansing, Clinton didn’t hurt them and none of them ended up shopping at Walmart under Obama either.

Following Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s comment that “We’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business,” CNN went to Logan County, West Virginia to talk to voters.

The response seen in the video from the residents of the Democrat-heavy county was possibly driven by the fact that the area has lost thousands of coal-mining jobs.
