I grew up in Detroit in the 70’s and still have family there. They say now it’s just miles and miles of nothing. Detroit was such a wonderful city before it was picked clean by corruption and graft. The auto industry leaving is also a big part of the decline.

I’m still there, holly100. Not in the city, but just next door. My parents moved to the suburbs in 1947, to give me a more country atmosphere as I grew up.

There is still a lot of good remaining in the city, the politicians are a better lot these past few years, and investment has come back to the city – slowly, but noticeable. Young entrepreneurs, particularly, are moving back into the city, and companies are taking advantage of cheap real estate and land.

There is a group of businessmen with capital who are doing their best to rebuild the city, even donating equipment to the fire department. The new mayor (while still a Democrat) is a white man with a background in business success. Investors are much more interested in investing in the city now that those in charge are more interested in the city rather than lining their own pockets, and in pushing a racist agenda.

There is still a lot to be done; you can’t turn around a city in a couple of years, when it took decades to tear it apart. General Motors is still headquartered in Detroit, and there are still auto manufacturing plants within the city limits, as well as many more in the suburbs.

Detroit is always the example given of the failed city, and I hope that it won’t always be the go-to. Still, this video has a lot of truth in it.

Yes, there is a lot of hope for the future there. My relative just opened his own business at the age of 50! He is very optimistic. Detroit won’t be what it was but it can reinvent itself. Detroiters are interesting breed and still have a lot of civic pride. I have so much to say about Detroit but have a brain injury and don’t want to spam the thread with my jibberjabber 🙂

Two things jump out. 1/3 the budget goes to 21,000 retirees and their families? Even by corrupt urban graft standards that is akin to piracy.

And sadly, they took everything but the books. That is a powerful statement. They took everything of little value and left that of real value in the dirt, by their graft in robbing funds from the library, and then finally by the theft and destruction. How sad.

The county recently eliminated medical benefits for retirees and their spouses, though they are still given monthly stipends for medical expenses. Around $130. My father retired from the county and even after his death my mother continued to receive medical benefits as his spouse. Now she is receiving the stipend. Still generous in these times.

This one left his mark on Detroit. Nasty, filthy, con-man! I know this left an indelible mark on my consciousness.

Kwame is in prison now, but he wasn’t the worst. That was Coleman Young. He’s dead.

Coleman Young was a modern day example of a Ph.D thesis titled “The Curly Effect”. Though the main subject is Boston Mayor Curly, Coleman Young continued Curly’s’ example in Detroit. The thesis’s point is shaping the electorate in order too keep you in office. Sounds familiar, yes the 47% Rommey mention, but ran away from his comment, even though the statement was true.

The “Firewall” video is so Powerful, so Sad. Thanks, I am glad I saw this.

My grandmother was born in Flint. Never have been to Michigan, except for about 5 minutes getting lost while driving from Chicago to S Bend. 😉
