And even though this is MONDAY’s thread, here is a good night for Sunday (where I still am). This is the Nunc dimittis, otherwise known as the Song of Simeon:
“Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace according to Thy word.
For mine eyes have seen Thy salvation,
Which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
A light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of Thy people Israel.”

And also the Phos hilaron, “the earliest known Christian hymn recorded outside of the Bible that is still in use today…” :
O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Knew I couldn’t make it without a drive-by…a VERY interesting article (which will be “disappeared” from the CTH O/T any minute now, b/c of its political nature). One might take exception to some of the wording, and the overall partisan tone, but IMO, a fascinating analysis:

Good morning! Nicer weather expected today;
It will be even warmer tomorrow – close to 70 – for election day.
Is Spring actually here? Probably not. We normally get snow the first week in April (almost always). I can always hope, though.
Lots of politics today again, I’m sure. Just think – we have only 8 more months and one day of this, until the election!
The word ‘politics’ is derived from the word ‘poly’, meaning ‘many’, and the word ‘ticks’, meaning ‘blood sucking parasites’.

Trouble is they don’t create jobs, they usually create positions.
LikeLiked by 5 people
I think they hire one person whose job is just to create positions.
I think that is probably why around here they just shovel gravel into holes knowing that will justify the number of employees when they have to do it every week.
LikeLiked by 3 people
I see the employees around here, they do a good job of holding shovel handles. I had the misfortune just the other day of getting behind them on my way home. They were driving along, one to drive the other to give instructions I guess and two to shovel gravel into the holes on the road. They did 4 holes and then stopped, took a smoke break and held the shovels up. At least though I was able to get around them at that point and that’s when I saw two inside the truck.
About an hour later my husband came home and was griping about the dummies wasting time and money when next week they’ll be back filling the same holes again. I asked him where he saw them at and in one hour they had made it about a mile. He said that was because they filled two holes and then stopped for a break. I told him they must be getting tired they were filling four holes before stopping.
Now a private employee would be fired for doing subpar work and taking breaks every 5 minutes, but county employees know as long as they look to be busy they’ll keep their job.

My ex used to say the gov roadworkers needed 5 people. One to do the work and 4 to do the heavy looking-on.

Our county guys work harder at getting out of work than they do working.
The state guys are just as bad, but then the government road contractors are pretty bad themselves.
It explains why our roads are so horrible. I’ll probably die here but if I ever did leave the state it would be because of the roads and highways.

Back in the early 80’s people were putting homemade bombs in other’s trashcans. One day I found a metal object that I didn’t recognize in mine. I called either the police or fire dept. to ask if they knew what it was. Five minutes later there was a fire truck, a rescue truck, and about 4 cop cars in front of my house. Probably the bomb squad, too. When I showed them where it was, the officer picked it up and looked at me and said, “This is a CO2 cartridge.” I had no idea what a CO2 cartridge was. I had never seen one. I imagine when they all got back to the office, they had a really good laugh. And, I have no idea how it got in my trash.

Back in the day, I received a call to investigate an explosive device at an old folks home, with Bomb and Arson on stanby. When I arrived all the residents were crowded around the front door with an old wizened gentleman directing them. This old gentleman was apparently in charge as he informed me that they had found some explosives on the property and that he had made it secure. This old gentlemen also informed me that he had been in the military, the Spanish American War I think. 😉
The old gentleman leads me to the far end of the building where he points at a couch that was covered in pillows. The gentleman informed me that he had placed the explosive there and cushioned it should it explode. The gentleman went on to inform me that he had identified the explosive as Nitroglycerin and that I should handle it carefully.
I carefully lifted the top pillow and observed a container with a yellow liquid inside. Following the old gentleman’s instructions, I carefully picked up the container and instructed him to clear the residents out of the way as I removed it from the building. As I carefully carried the container through the building, the old gentleman hurriedly went to the front door and opened it so I could exit the building.
As I exited the building, the old gentleman asked what I was going to do with the container with the explosive. I informed him that I had a “bomb box” in the back of my cruiser I and that I was going to take it to a safe location for disposal.
Once the contained was secured in my “bomb box,” I gave the old gentleman a thumbs up and drove very slowly away from the facility. After traveling several blocks, I then drove down some alleys until I found a suitable dumpster (open) where I could safely dispose of the “explosive.” I then informed the dispatcher of what had occurred, that the Urine Specimen had been safely disposed of, cancel Bomb and Arson and then “coded” the assignment.
Life in the big city. 🙂

Thanks, coppers back then always took care of the old folks. It was one of the reasons many of us got into the profession, to care for and to protect the weak. Corny I know, but it was the truth.
Besides, there was no way I could’ve handled it any differently. The old gentleman was the “heart throb” of the ladies that lived there, he was their Clark Gable. If I had contradicted him and said it wasn’t an explosive, they might have beat me with their canes. 🙂
Police work was fun back in the day, the rewards were immediate. All you had to do is look into the eyes of those you helped.

The cops took care of the young too, in small towns. Almost like strn parents. Instead of jail they would turn you over to mom and pop if you were bad, where I grew up. Sgt. Mac. was the man! Then there was The Dean at school.

I remember those days. My brother once was in town spending the weekend with a friend and they were shooting mailboxes and signs with pellet guns off their bicycles.
I was hiding and listening when the officer brought him home and our home was way out of his jurisdiction, he told my parents that both boys begged him to take them to jail and not home. My brother was around 10 at the time. He got his rear spanked and was put on “girl” detail for a week, he had to wash clothes, wash dishes, scrub and wax the floors, clean the windows, scrub the toilet and bathtub and he lost his bike for a month and his pellet gun for 6 months and he was not allowed to go stay the night with his friend anymore. Not only did he ever go around shooting any signs or mailboxes again, but his punishment made the rest of not want to do that particular crime.
Today the kids would more than likely be charged with a crime and if they begged for jail over their parents, CPS would probably be called in to investigate “abuse.”
However, far too many parents today probably would just tell them not to do it again and would blame the cops for being mean to their precious child.

As the details are being revealed, more questions than answers are being raised.
http://stopshouting.blogspot.com/2016/03/a-brief-comment-on-ongoing-revelations.html
I am reminded of PZ’s story as one of the vignettes in his law school admission essay,
“Without the Law, What are We?”, where the HumVee he was gunner in the turret on was surrounded by what he believed to be insurgents in stolen Iraqi army uniforms. They continued to press towards the vehicle, even after numerous warnings in Arabic to stand down and stand back and the situation continued to escalate. Understand the man had already been IED’d twice by then and survived several failed ambush attempts. With his finger squeezing on the trigger, he had a decision to make. He would have been “justified” in shooting, but chose patience and forebearance and allowed the scene to play out.
Taking a life should never, ever be taken lightly, let alone with the arrogance of “justification” hiding behind state sanctioned force. I have watched the various videos of the scene, and I am disgusted by what I see. FWIW.

Good morning Stellar Friends! Time for an Iditarod update. I did not get anything written yesterday due to a heavy schedule. The actual start of the race happened smoothly yesterday, beginning at 2:00 pm Alaska time in the town of Willow, Alaska. A word about the Ceremonial Start/Restart thing. Back in the early years of Iditarod in the 1970s, Alaska had no freeways. Mushers started in downtown Anchorage and drove their teams all the way to Nome. With the building of a controlled-access freeway from Anchorage to Fairbanks, there was no way to mush directly from Anchorage into the Alaska Range. Thus the Restart, which is now the real beginning of the race.
The Ceremonial Start is required, but does not count as part of the race. The teams take off one at a time in Anchorage with throngs of fans cheering from the sidelines and a blitz of media interviewing, broadcasting and recording. The sleds are empty of any supplies and only 12 dogs are in harness. There is an auction for people to be “Iditariders” who get to ride in the musher’s sled for those few Anchorage miles, with some paying a couple of thousand bucks to be in the big-name sleds. At the end of these few miles, dogs and sleds are loaded into the musher’s trucks and driven to the Restart, this year in Willow but some years in other towns, to begin the real race on Sunday. Aliy Zirkle had a Go-Pro camera mounted just behind her on the follow sled (only used for the Ceremonial Start, to give extra control in the congested city) which gives a great sense of the fun and hoop-la of this media event. You can watch here: http://spkenneldoglog.blogspot.com/2016/03/id-ceremonial-start-videos.html
Yesterday’s Restart went off without a hitch. The Restart is also one team at a time leaving every 2 minutes. Mass starts, where all teams line up together and take off at once, are a recipe for disaster when there are more than a half dozen teams. There are 85 teams competing in this year’s race, so it took almost 3 hours to launch all the teams. Those time differences will be compensated for at the 24-hour mandatory rest somewhere near the race midpoint; this is a major factor in comparing relative positions during the early race.
There are 22 checkpoints in the race, about 100 miles apart. Each musher sends supplies out ahead of time to be retrieved when they arrive–dog food, musher food, clothing, gear, even a whole different (much lighter) sled for the last leg of the race. Dogs who are not doing well for any reason can be “dropped” at any checkpoint and will be flown back to Anchorage where they are cared for until retrieved by the mushers or their handlers.
The front of the race has just reached the 3rd checkpoint. Aliy is in 2nd place right now (which doesn’t mean a whole lot at this early point, but is always encouraging to see). The first team to scratch has done so at the 2nd checkpoint, so we’re down to 84 teams. I expect as many as two dozen teams may scratch before the race is over. Anything can happen out there, and often does. In 1985, the great Susan Butcher had to scratch when her team was attacked by a moose on the trail who killed several dogs and injured many more as Susan watched, helpless to stop it. Forever after that, she carried a rifle in the sled, which is not required. That was the year that Libby Riddles went down in history as the first woman to win. Without that moose, I believe Susan Butcher would have held that honor. She went on to win in four of the next five years. No woman has won the race since.
Buckle up, race fans! We’re just getting started. In case you’d like a little extra dog mushing entertainment, I highly recommend the book Winter Dance: the Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod by Gary Paulsen. Thigh-slapping hilarity.

Thanks, taqi, love this! What he’s doing is called popcorning–jumping up and lunging against the halter to go. Usually accompanied by constant barking. This is common behavior among lesser-trained dogs and it is usually the entire team doing it. Your snow hook better be firmly planted (preferably with someone standing on it) or that lunging will bust it loose and the team is off down the trail without you. People see the highly trained dogs of Iditarod standing quietly at the start and think that is normal behavior. I can tell you from much experience that it is not.

Two of the mushers are Alaska native: Jon Baker, who is Inuit, and Mike Williams, Jr., who is Yup’ik. The rest are Caucasian (or mostly so), from the US, Canada, Norway, Sweden, and UK. Norway has 8 teams in the race.

The video I posted originally, last year, has been removed from YouTube. Maybe that’s the one you remember.
ADD: I see you found it!

I’ll add your update to the Iditarod post, and reschedule it for today. I’ll do that whenever you update.

There was a side link for it while I was looking for information on Netanyahu and thanks to Tundra’s posts here it immediately grabbed my attention.

They wear googles. And booties. I learn something new every day.

Almost all the dogs wear booties these days (not so much in the past when dogs were bred for tough feet), but the goggles are a bit strange. Not a common practice.

Love it.
Nothing from Ramirez yet.
Christ said there are mansions up there. Many of them.
Mansions aren’t for single people. I think I agree with Zo Rachel when he said that, and stated flatly that yes, you will be continuing to procreate. He laid out a very convincing argument, too. They’re mansions, not communes. We’re not going to be sexless androgynes in heaven, with no purpose other than sitting on clouds and playing harps.
No, it’ll be like here, but better.

And yet, we still love each other.
Man, I love me some Christians.
No beheading, or tossing each other off buildings for disagreements about the exact nature of the afterlife, or even if it exists at all.
Naw, for us it’s like, “Hey, you need help changing that tire? How about a prayer or ten?”

Trump hating will be a bigger cottage industry than GWB hating was.
And that’s saying something. The papier-mache industry is looking up right now, after 8 long years of no sales of giant, blood-dripping, evil, hitleresque puppets portraying our president.
The protest industry is absolutely stoked right now. Because they can finally Fight The Power again. 8 long years of no industrial-scale protesting, besides that first couple of years occupying and pooping on cop cars.
Now that we’ll have a Republican making war, war will be Bad again!

The protest industry right now is like that video of Stella’s I posted above, right now.
RUN RUN RUN!
They’re popcorning.

In fact, I would wager that the protest industry higher-ups, the myriad ex-ACORN orgs, all the Soros-funded execs who made all those riots happen for the whole 8 years after 9/11/2001, are going to vote for him and convince others to do so as well.
They need to protest for that Communist money. It’s what they do. They need a reason to protest, though. Can’t protest against a black guy, after campaigning for his Hope and Change. That would make you racist. And a hypocrite. Not that hypocrisy ever was a negative trait for Progressives themselves.
I feel like we’re on a sick merry-go-round some days. And it’s either 1968 or 1932.
And the carnie is smiling at us, laughing as we get more and more nauseous.

Well in al fairness it looks like he spent the evening talking about The Bachelor and what a terrible show it is. So he has that going for him. Twitter is a very odd universe.

For me, Twitter is primarily a vehicle for passing on information that I think is important. And as I am more inclined to read what people have to say if THEY are measured and calm, I try to do that, too. Not always successful, but I try.

There is a little Icon(?) at the bottom of the screen next to where I click on Foxfire and it has some little squiggles on it. I have no idea what it is for. That is the name that comes up when I run the cursor across it. I really am not fond of technology because they keep updating it. Nobody is updating my mind. 😦

Is it a programming/developer’s tool? Maybe nyet can fill you in on it.

Don’t automatically assume that. It may be used for some other program you have on your computer.

Yes its a framework that can be used for lots of things. Lenovo uses it in their system update utility. Some games use it. It seems to be getting more common, and has regular updates.

That is most likely the case.

Did you request it? Or personally download it, because you wanted it?
Then you probably don’t want it.
I could be off base here, I know. Have you recently installed a new program that might need it in order to properly function?
Google it. But, if I get a pop-up asking me if I wish to install something that I didn’t specifically load up, I always say no, delete it, and figure out why it wanted to be installed in the first place.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and AVG antivirus are good follow-ups to these occurrences.

Look up Ransomware.
It’s a big fad, now, and everyone should know about it.
The gist: you click “OK” on a dialog that asks you if you wish to install “Professional Sounding Program Name”, in an e-mail attachment. Might be a .doc file. Might be another extension. It then locks your entire PC with crazy encryption. You turn on your PC, and get a message about where to send the money, for the unlock key.
Be safe, online. Quit using 12345 as a password.
Your operating system has a Notepad program. Make better passwords. I just look away from the keyboard, randomly hit keys, adjust the outcome, and put them all in a text file.
Good to ask, aus.
If you don’t know who sent it, or you don’t know what it is, don’t click OK.
Knock on wood, but I’ve never had a virus or adware problem, in more than 10 years.
That I know of. There’s always that paranoia. But with these issues, it usually boils down to what the computer user(s) personally decide to click “OK” on.
Now that I mention it, is there more than one user of your PC?

I am the only user. It wasn’t in an email. And, the program was already on,

We need to get our porch painted. We got all the scraping done about a week ago, but haven’t gotten around to painting. Now I guess it will have to wait until the rain moves out.
Just not enough hours in the day to do everything that always needed done.

So that is why Rubio is still in. The less delegates any of them have the better for Romney/Ryan to push on the public that there is no clear favorite and Romney/Ryan are there to draw unity out of chaos. So Rubio is in through Florida. That is why Trump called for Rubio to drop out.
